That may be your personal choice,
but please do not try to extrapolate that choice to Pentaxians in general.

You said "DSLR", which used to mean APS-C in Pentaxland,
and the dedicated line of DA lenses to go with that.

Like Nikon, Canon, etc., so only minor brand differentiation there.

The APS-C DSLRs that Pentax has previously offered,
along with lenses like the DA Limiteds,
have been a good compact alternative to mirrorless cameras.
FF DSLRs won't help advance that compact sector.

Back-pedaling implies applying the brakes (an old cycling term?),
e.g., not releasing the DA 11-18 ("yet," I will add optimistically!).

The issues @monochrome raised are fundamental,
and go far beyond the DSLR question.

But even there, Pentax has been back-pedaling their previous APS-C specialization,
along with their neglect of the 645 line.

But decidedly inferior in build quality for long-term longevity (mode button excepted),
battery power to keep the LCD screen lit up,
and heat sink capacity to stop high sensor temperatures degrading the IQ.

That is what Pentax used to be, like when they maintained the Q and 645 lines.
Equipment that really expands the photographic space,
let's you do things you can't do with mainstream stuff.

Unfortunately, they now seem to be subject to brutal ROI calculations,
which don't allow for a gentle, low-cost sustenance of what really differentiated the brand.

From 08 WIDE ZOOM / High-Performance Lenses / Q-mount Lenses / Lenses / Products | RICOH IMAGING :

"Three glass-molded aspherical lenses are used"

That's better than the FA*24 and DA15 which have hybrid aspherics.

From 02 STANDARD ZOOM / High-Performance Lenses / Q-mount Lenses / Lenses / Products | RICOH IMAGING :

"The optical system uses a total of four special optical glass lenses"

Except that, like for the LX, they will use Roman numerals: XII.

You heard it here first! :)

US Pentax Deal Roundup - Week of November 5, 2018

Since the competition didn't feel the need to match the $497 price,
I wouldn't expect to see a price drop that soon.

OTOH, they may well keep the $597 price through Friday.

If you get a good copy, it's certainly a great lens.
I paid $900 for mine just after it was introduced,
and it's been my standard travel lens ever since.

Reading the tea-leaves gave me the chance to back-fill my Q system
before that became too expensive and time-consuming.

Except for a DA* 11-18, which seems like it could be as good as the 09 would have been,
I'm all set for APS-C, so no personal worries there.

That question would have been totally unthinkable until recently,
but the fact that it was even broached during @subsea's PhotoPlus visit
did stir up some uneasy echoes of the retirement of the Q line:

The way I look at it,
if the lighting's too harsh to see the screen,
it's probably too harsh for a worthwhile photograph. :)

No, JPY 42,800 is less than USD 380, so not too far from OP's USD 300.

I wouldn't worry too much about money-laundering scams on t'bay.

But Ricoh in Japan is still selling off its stock of Q-S1s for JPY 42,800

???????/???????/PENTAX Q-S1/PENTAX Q-S1 ??? | RICOH IMAGING

You might be able to get one through Rakuten or the like.
Or just pick up one (or a Q7) from the marketplace here.
They're much faster than the original Q,
and have way more depth of field than the 1" or bigger sensors,
which is a real benefit with the 06 telephoto zoom,
or adapting a K-mount tele.

Well, we are talking about Pentax, after all.
A company whose camera sensors align with the stars.
