Pentax Mirrorless?

Don't forget the "cheap", "flimsy", not-gonna-last-a-month rubber flappy door (none of which have torn off my K-01s after six years, but I digress) - I would say that at the time, in perceived build quality, it was about even.

(I argued the same points in 2012 that you bring up now, but it was no use - the K-01 was "garbage", according to the pundits.)

At the time, a great many people complained at length about more than just the design - the lack of an EVF (even as an option), the lack of a tilt screen, the substandard video, the slow AF performance (or complete failure to AF with some long lenses), the high launch price. The styling was just one problem of many - and quite a few people seemed to be able to tolerate, even like, the design - at a (much) lower price point.

Sony had a smaller mirrorless (NEX-5 series) at a lower price (launch price about the same as the K-01 after the six-month price reduction). It was superior in all of these areas, AND it could use a much wider range of vintage lenses - changing the styling of the K-01 still would have produced a product that compared poorly to the competition. A bigger battery and compatibility with (some) K-mount AF lenses would not have made up the difference.

Yep, after years of a failing business model - you can only cut so many corners. We had one of the last stores in the state (I think they had a captive audience, because it was near the college campus, and there was no real estate on that side of town that a Wal-Mart could fit in). They always had a good selection of cheap Christmas decorations, but every time I stopped by (once a year - see the problem?), there was an air of desolation about the place. I drove by and saw the "store closing" banner today.

Interestingly, the cost of cloud storage HASN'T gone down significantly over the past five years (according to an article I read, not my research). I suspect it's because of the second part of the equation - speed of service. I can buy a 4TB SATA drive for about what I paid for 2TB five years ago (in fact, I did, just last month). However, the JPEGs and DNGs I'm storing now are almost twice as big as the ones from five years ago. I'm also more likely to throw a couple videos into a shoot, so the cost of storing one shoot hasn't gone down - it's stayed the same. The larger files take almost twice as long to load, so I need a faster drive (and a faster PC) to have the same "user experience" that I had five years ago. I suspect the same holds for cloud providers - while the cost for one TB at the same speed may have gone down, they have to continually upgrade every component in the chain or else they are "slow" by the ever-increasing standards of the day.

I have to say, as a "Pro" subscriber for the past ten years, the complaints about Flickr definitely went up as Yahoo cut staff and offered free terabytes. It started to feel like K-mart - no one goes there except for something cheap, good luck finding an employee if you need one, and some of the people that ARE there are extremely sketchy. As an aside, I wonder how many of the 97% of "free" accounts that aren't over the 1000 picture limit are just robo-scam accounts with NO pictures, or a handful of stolen photos of a Russian glamour model?

I think a lot of flak came from poor support, which was a direct result of Yahoo chopping budgets and laying off staff, which was all a part of a failing business model. I know people don't like paying for something that they previously got for free, but something had to change. I also understand the frustration about images being deleted, but they are probably migrating from whatever storage Yahoo used to Amazon cloud storage (that's what SmugMug uses, apparently); if they kept everything, then they are shackled to the same failing model - paying for a lot of storage that generates no income. How upset would everyone be if the announcement was to get your stuff before they shut down forever?

Yahoo/Flickr's legal stance was that the account was non-transferrable and was terminated upon notification of the owner's death. If no one informed them of the death, then a paid account would revert to a free account when the subscription ran out. SmugMug seems to be a little hazier - I saw one thread where SmugMug support seemed to think a family member could take over payments for a SmugMug account - he probably hadn't talked to the legal folks. Legal ownership of "virtual" property is still evolving.

Pentax K-01 failure? No one knows it exists.

Renault owns a 44% stake in Nissan, but Nissan owns a 15% stake in Renault. They are still separate companies, and while Nissan sells a couple rebadged Renault models in some markets, it's not in the US. Neither owns any part of PSA Peugeot Citroen, so far as I can tell.

Anyhow, this still supports my point - it was years after withdrawing from the US market that a renewed Renault was able to partner with a struggling Nissan. Having little to no presence in the US does not always equal stagnation, or death, especially with the US market rapidly contracting. Being saddled with a vast infrastructure designed around a consumer base that has changed their tastes could also be fatal, whether your company is Sears, or Nikon.

Would you buy a Renault or a Peugeot? They both exited the US auto market in the early 90s, but both are still making cars. When Hoya bought Pentax for their medical business, they essentially abandoned the US camera market, then they abandoned cameras. (Well, they sold what was left of the division, but sold it for a song - $124 million. For comparison, I hear Canon spends $50 million on advertising, just in the US, in a single year.)

This is an important point. Even with their almost non-existent advertising, Pentax could barely keep up with demand for the K-1 when it came out. They are THAT small now. It's not just a matter of advertising, it's a matter of building factories to be able to meet big-box store demand, establishing channels to the big box stores, maybe re-establishing relationships with the few remaining brick-and-mortar stores, and THEN advertising. That's why it would cost Ricoh $1.4 billion to get back into the US market - at a time when digital camera sales are collapsing, their photocopier income is waning, and the company as a whole is tightening belts.

Is there room to revive the M42 Takumar brand?

Easy - Because Samyang lenses are already designed for manual focus, and no one expects a premium look and feel - all they would have to do is make a different plate and an aperture ring without 'A' mode (maybe use one from the C/N/S versions), and they are done. Virtually no design changes to the lens or assembly tooling. Expectations would be much higher for a Pentax Limited - if they just slapped a different plate on the back and charged a premium for it, everyone would ask why they didn't make changes to optimize it for manual focusing, skinny focus rings, damping, focus throw, blah blah blah. No one would notice if Samyang did a quick-n-dirty conversion, but even the appearance of one would be a P/R black eye for Pentax.

I would also assume that buyers would want more modern glass than just the "three princesses", and anything designed in the last ten years would have to have an aperture ring added.

Not at Ricoh/Pentax. Pentax barely has the design/production capacity to support their current mounts (see any number of forum threads complaining about this). Redesigning current lenses into satisfactory manual-focus, manual-aperture designs and manufacturing them would require additional capacity that they simply do not have (or they would be using it).

If there was significant demand for good modern M42 glass, I think companies like Samyang would be pursuing it. It would be almost trivial for them to put a different mount plate on their existing K-mount designs. For that matter, if there was significant demand for M42 versions of just the FA Limiteds, someone like Leitax would have already filled it.

Poor little girl (it's a hen), she must have taken a wrong turn in the garden center and zipped through an open door. Many thanks to you and your wife for looking after her.

I had to take my feeders down because of the storm, and when I looked out the window this morning, there was a hummer looking back at me (immature male, one of "my" chicks from this year) I will pretend that he was trying to get my attention to complain about the lack of feeders. I dug out the sturdiest feeder I have, and bungee-corded it to the railing supports so that it wouldn't flop around in the wind. Even in a hurricane, a bird needs fuel.

What mount is this?

Looks like the inner ring of a T-mount adapter. T-mount adapters consist of an inner ring that screws onto the lens, and an outer ring with flanges for whatever mount it is. The inner ring should screw off the lens, leaving 42mm threads - but they are a different pitch from M42 screw mount. T-to-K mount adapters are widely available.

The K-3 and K-3ii use the same replaceable focus screen as the K-7/5/5ii/5iis/30/50/500/S1/S2/70 and KP. While KatzEye has gone out of business, there are other sources for split image screens.

I was thinking all of my DAs had gone between 400 and 500mph at one point or another - should we be counting air speed, or ground speed?

(My largest-aperture lens is a Cosina 55/1.2. It's somewhat "dreamy" wide open, with a rather busy "bubble" bokeh.)

It really does. I have a cheapo monopod that stays in the trunk of my car (for use as a walking stick/club, if nothing else). I finally accumulated enough round tuits to upgrade the ball head on my "good" monopod this week, and the cheap ball went straight to the big stick in the car.

question on tele conveter lenses
Posted By THoog

I don't think the body knows or cares that a teleconverter is mounted - it only knows whether it is getting enough light to lock focus. The TC may have "passthru" contacts so that the lens' ID information is reported to the body, and some TCs are smart enough to translate the reported focal length, but some aren't.

I've stacked TCs before. The results were mush, but through the viewfinder, it was handy as a spotting scope.
