last month to upgrade

I wonder why Ricoh limited the upgrade so it's not available after this month. I emailed them asking if the time might be extended and got a reply simply saying to watch their website for further news. Nothing yet.

I'm very conflicted and undecided on the upgrade. I use my K-1 exclusively for landscapes on a tripod with BBF and my only perceived reason to get the upgrade is for hand held PSR. There are times when the tripod isn't practical or sometimes possible so I think I would use HHPS occasionally. But, reviews seem to vary a lot on how useful HHPS is and how good the results are. Focusing speed, etc. don't matter to me.

Obviously I'm going to have to decide soon. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Digital Trends Comment on Hand Held Pixel Shift

Thanks for the clarifications. If it doesn't shift pixels it doesn't seem like it should be called hand held pixel shift does it? I sure had a misconception. I've been undecided about getting the upgrade. My K-1 is used exclusively for landscapes, the vast majority of the time on a tripod, but I thought the HHPS might be useful for the occasional hand held shot, especially when I'm rushed. But, after reading a lot of reviews and the info posted on this and other threads, it seems doubtful it would be worth it for me. Thanks again.

Digital Trends Comment on Hand Held Pixel Shift

While researching reviews on hand held pixel shift in the K-1 MK II I ran across a general review of the MK II on the Digital Trends website. I know there have been two or three other threads here recently on this website's MK II reviews but I this one appears to be a different review than those. I did not look at the video version but only read the text version. The following was stated in this review:

"But one of the things Pentax users wanted after the K-1 was a handheld Pixel Shift mode, and the K-1 II offers exactly that. Well, maybe not exactly. Although the function resides inside the Pixel Shift submenu, it doesn’t do the same thing that tripod-based Pixel Shift does. Instead, it uses the photographer’s natural movement to take four slightly different images, then aligns them and stacks them. In our experience, when it worked it had a negligible effect, and often it simply didn’t work and actually reduced detail due to motion blur."

That seems to state that hand held PSR does not involve the actual shifting of pixels, which is news to me. This is not correct, is it?

I found this review to be the most negative and inaccurate review of any product I have ever read. It makes the DPR review of the K-1 that many of us disliked so much seem like a glowingly positive report! It's a total waste of time to read this one.

Somehow I got the impression that the Irix is threaded for screw on filters - is this incorrect?

Tammy 70-200 locked on a K-1

I have used the Tamron 70-200, same version as yours, on my K-1 for the past two years and never had a mounting problem of any sort. The mounting has always been very smooth, as good as any other lens I have used on the K-1. Thus no suggestions. I suspect this is a rarely encountered problem. Please let us know the outcome.

K1 Warranty did you need it?

I've had my K-1 for two years and not one single problem. A "drops and slops" warranty, or whatever damage coverage is best called, might be a better choice than an extended warranty and are inexpensive. I did buy one of those but haven't used it either.

K1 weird histogram in LV mode

This baffles me. I routinely use LV as the last step in my procedure for shooting landscapes (on a tripod) to check focusing using image magnification and focus peaking, and lastly check the histogram which I've found useful. In many hundreds of shots I've never encountered anything like this. I certainly can't offer an explanation or solution but can only comment I think what's described above is highly anomalous. Perhaps contacting Ricoh or a repair facility is indicated?

Lens recommendation for landscape photography
Posted By wanderer2

The description of the territory you will be shooting, "lakes, mountains, and greenlands" sounds much like the Rocky Mountains where I live and do much of my photography. When the word "landscape" is used the automatic first thought for many is wide or ultra wide angle. However, in this setting I often have the need for much longer reach. The longest of the lenses you have is apparently the 43 and I know I would almost immediately be wishing for a longer lens. Because of your weight considerations I can't advise you on exactly which longer lens(es) to take but I would want at least the 28-105, and one other longer lens if at all possible. I hope this is of some help.

are you happy with switching to FF?

About two years ago I switched from a Canon APS-C to a F-1, both cameras used almost exclusively for landscapes. I've never regretted it for a picosecond. One of my motivations was wanting better IQ in very large prints and that has happened.

Irix 15 mm - using hyper focal guides on the lens
Posted By wanderer2

What camera are you using? It isn't using hyper focal distance but my K-1 indicates a manual focus lens is in focus when the little green light (seen using the view finder) illuminates as focus is adjusted. I've found it to be reliable. Using live view focus peaking with image magnification also works well. I have the same problem with aging eyes and need all the help I can get. I don't have any any other Pentax models so don't know if any of this applies to other than the K-1.

What Is The Deal With Plastic?

As previously noted, plastics have long been considered inferior to metal in strength, resistance to beakage, etc. However, plastics are now much improved and very strong. As an example, awhile back I dropped a very heavy totally plastic bodied portable electric drill from a height of 12 feet onto concrete with no dents, cracks, or hardly even a scratch. If it had been metal I think it would have at least been dented. I personally would not turn down a lens I wanted just because it was plastic.

Why I have decided not to upgrade.

I plan to upgrade for a reason you did not mention, so I can use the enhanced PSR and shoot some scenes hand held because of time pressures, etc. Currently I shoot a lot of landscapes with PSR but only on a tripod and that's my preference, but sometimes the situation doesn't allow that and hand held than allows capture of a scene I would otherwise miss. At least I hope it works out that way. The $550+ is a lot of money for someone like me on a retirees budget and will delay me getting a lens I want.

I wonder if Sun Camera will accept K-1s from owners in the US for the upgrade? Given the concerns about Precision Camera it might worth the higher shipping costs, etc. for the peace of mind.

Since this thread has reappeared I'll give an update on my post from last November. Since doing the update the oscillation of the image on the lcd I described has never recurred, not even once. So that appears to have been the instability that Ricoh was describing.

Can both manual and AF Nikkor lenses be converted to K mount with the Leitax adapters or only manual? If AF ones can also be converted is AF then lost? Is the same true with 3rd party F mount lenses? Thanks.

Upgrade or Trade K-1 In for K-1II

I'm not sure I understand the question, but if it involves what skill, or feature, that i would get from the K-1 II that I don't have with my K-1, the answer is the new handheld Pixel Shift Resolution capability. My K-1 is now used almost exclusively for landscapes on a tripod with PSR but the option of being able to use the K-1 II quickly handheld with PSR will be useful for me.

Perhaps now Adam but will that be so after the K=1 II is on the market? I can't sell mine ahead of time and be without a camera. But thanks for the advice.

---------- Post added 03-14-18 at 04:26 PM ----------

Thanks Tax. I hadn't considered that, being stuck on the "new is better" reasoningl

I almost always use electronic shutter with my K-1 and don't know if it has any shutter shock or not - if it does I haven't recognized it. But that's another reason to go with the upgrade - thanks.

Upgrade or Trade K-1 In for K-1II
Posted By wanderer2

I've been considering what the cost difference will be, purchasing the upgrade for $550 or trading in my K-1 for the K-1 II. So I emailed B&H asking what trade in value they would give me for my mint, perfectly functioning K-1 for a K-1 II when they are released. The answer came back $750. This would mean a net cost for the new model of about $1250, $700 more than the upgrade. So, for me, being on a retiree's budget, that's an easy decision.

The third option would be selling my K-1 privately but I would think there will be so many on the market after the II is released that a substantial drop in price will occur, so that's an uncertain situation. Much as I would like a brand new one, it appears that the upgrade is the only financially viable option for me. Just thought I would share this experience.

Hoya UV filters

A lens hood is another option for protection. Some prefer filters, some prefer hoods, some use both. I use as short as possible metal lens hoods, about 1 inch, with a lens cap on the hood, on each of my lenses, usually removing the hood before shooting unless there is a specific need for it. The drawbacks to this method are that it takes up more space in the camera bag and at times the cap may come off the hood. Many think that adding another layer of glass on a lens with a uv filter may degrade the image somewhat, and I did have one experience where some damaged occurred despite a filter. I don't know if the image degredation is true but would rather avoid the possibility and a hood is cheaper than a filter. It has worked well for me. I also keep longer hoods for when the primary need is glare protection.
