Hi,

I always really liked the monochrome digital sensors. Not too many out there, although Kodak was the king of those (and IR and UV as well). I wonder, when I replace the 645D, if I could make a mono CCD out of it.......

Hi,

When I was with IBM, we referred to computer word processors as Mark III. The Selectric typewriters were referred to as Mark II. And they had piles of wooden pencils in all the hardnesses around, which we referred to as Mark I. ;)

And the Mark I were used a lot with a little flip style notebook with a hard cover with the word Think on it. The original ThinkPad, before they stuck that moniker onto notebook computers.

Hi,

I went and the shot seven NC lighthouses with the P645D I bought expressly to shoot lighthouses with. I only took a cell phone shot of the MF rig for three of them, though. But, I will share what I have and remember to always shoot the MF rig with a cell phone in the future.

Hatteras

Shooting Hatteras

Ocracoke

Shooting Ocracoke

Bodie Island

Shooting Bodie Island

These were all on the same day. I had an issue getting to Hatteras and Ocracoke. It took three tries to get these. My first trip got Currituck and Bodie but I was way too late in the day for Hatteras. So, that meant another trip. That trip didn't get them, either, because NC route 12 has a habit of the ocean and wind washing across the road and burying it under a sand dune. And, that is what happened on Trip Two.

Trip Three worked out. I headed down to the coast the afternoon before and stayed the night. So, Hatteras was the morning shot. To get from Hatteras to Ocracoke requires a ferry trip. And, quite a wait. By then the clouds came in. But, that was a blessing in disguise as I hadn't ever seen Ocracoke before and I find out it has a texture. No photo of it I have ever seen shows that! And, so the clouds prevented my blowing the thing out. :)

So, a late lunch on the island and another ferry trip back and, gee, Bodie is illuminated by the low sun under the edge of the coastal clouds. So, why not stop and shoot that one again? ;)

And, there is my Behind the Scenes story. For now. I have ID'd 96 more lighthouses to go shoot. I might be at it a while! :p

Hi,

Both are great, Ed. And, so very different. And, the same spot. Wicked! :)

And, y'all really have to stop showing me wonderful shots taken with lenses I don't have yet. My wife is very, very scared by that word: yet! :p

Pentax 645Z next model

Hi,

This is always possible of course. Sony isn't going to say until they are ready. But, I suspect the choices will continue to be either the 100 or the 150 for some time. Me? I'm rooting for the 150 for Pentax. That gives the market another choice as opposed to the Same Thing Only Different we had between the 645z and the 50s/r offerings. :)

645D: better at 200 or 100 ISO?

Hi,

Well, looking at the Kodak sensor data sheet, where they don't actually state it in terms of ISO, and doing a little ciphering as my Dad referred to it, I come out with a base ISO around 120. But, that's above 100, so I think Pentax then chose 200 as being the base. And, then gave us the option of using 100. My own testing and then really shooting at both 100 and 200 shows the unit works equally well at both. It doesn't have the usual issues with a lower than camera base ISO the way other cameras do. So, I keep mine at 100 unless I need to boost it.

Pentax 645Z next model

Hi,

There will have been a Last Time Buy from Sony on the sensor. We have zero idea regarding how many Pentax ordered, nor what their production rate is. So, they could have bought a decade's worth for all we know. The 645z is likely to be in production for a few more years, I suspect.

So, the pairs keep popping up and up and up. And, I see repeats in there. I am now thinking that the over 8000 more to vote for means *me* voting over 4000 more times?

Hi,

I went and shot all seven of the North Carolina lighthouses this summer using the 645 FA 45-85/4.5 and the 645 FA 80-160/4.5 on six of them. For the seventh, I used 645 FA 200/4. That last really fell in between the 200/4 and 645 A* 300/4 so I went with the 200 and cropped it a little. All these on the 645D, which worked out wonderfully. :)

And, all were $300 each or less. :) :)

Edit1: Dug up from my old thread:

645 FA 45-85/4.5: $190.25
645 FA 80-160/4.5: $291.06
645 A* 300/4: $200.00
645 1.4x Converter A: $46.84
645 2x Converter A: $43.69
645 FA 200/4: $133.88

Edit2: The only item in the list that isn't all that good is the 2x TC on the 300/4 and I used it three times during all these coastal trips. Because a soft 2x TC is better than cropping with the 1.4x TC.

Edit3: Oh. And, I forgot. I also bought the 645 A 120mm macro lens for $149. Plus I have a 67 135 macro which I had picked up first and also a 67 Soft Focus. I haven't used the 67 135 since I got the 645 120.

Edit4: The old thread which has the lighthouse shots (plus what I have been doing with it all) within:

Hi,

I understand as I am much the same way. I have to be careful around here or I'd have every lens made for both the 645 and the 67. ;)

Being a radio R+D guy, I have test equipment. I mean my own not just what the outfits I work for have. And lots of it. For example, five spectrum analyzers. You'd think Just One would do, and you'd be right. Technically. But they all do things a bit differently, and so Unit 1 is best for X measurement and Unit 2 is best for Y, and so on,

Yup. :)

So, No Difference. Besides, to me, light is just bursts of really high frequency RF. And, a camera is an instrument to measure same. And, the lens is the probe. :p

Autofocus issue and battery drain problem with a used 645D

Hi,

Mine keeps the battery for weeks on end in the camera and powered off.

One of the symptoms of a failing battery is a long charge time followed by a fast discharge time. I'd certainly try a new battery as my next step. A new OEM one.

Hi,

Neat job. Won't work on a D. The CCD can't do live view. CCDs need to read out in the dark so the shutter is closed.

Hi,

Yup. Tesla and Westinghouse. There is a single line at 765kV from the Falls to Albany, NY then a series of four 340kV from Albany to Indian Point. Those went thru my little town in NY where I grew up. Was quite the sight one summer evening when lightning hit Indian Point and the surge melted the wires way up where we lived. Lit up the night, all right!

Hi,

That one with the angled top....when I am up top of Whiteface Mountain in NY, in early July, the sun reflects off that roof. Looks like a second sun to the North. Freaky! :)

What are the two 645 fitting lenses you can't live without?

Hi,

I am getting the feeling here I should change the 645 FA 45-85 and 80-160 for the 67 55-100 and 90-180.... ;)

That way, the 645 33-55 won't have so much overlap with the intermediate zoom.

Hi,

The 33-55 I have been looking at is the 645 FA one, so auto focus.

I haven't looked for a 67 version for that. I didn't even know there was such.

Hi,

Dang it all! I am feeling a bit left out here. I only have two 67 lenses. One I don't use, the 135 macro, after I got the A 120. The other is the soft focus, so rather a specialized use lens.

:p

question on PENTAX 645Z lens hoods

Hi,

I just had a look and my FA 200/4 has no dots. Doesn't matter there as it is a circular hood as opposed to a petal hood. So if you get it set on 'off', all that happens is the Pentax name isn't shown quite 'right'.

Both the FA 45-85/4.5 and FA 80-160/4.5 have petal hoods and the alignment dots so you don't get the petals twisted.
