Steadify, a tripod/monopod substitute (on Kickstarter)

I was advised to try a stand up butt rest, as in butt of a fishing rod. You wear if around your waist, fit a monopod on the camera, and rest the end of the monopod in the butt rest. Simples!

Fixed LCD screen - how to view from above / below?

BUT...whilst having the tilting monitor is very useful, you still need to get reasonably close to view it, whereas a field monitor can be mounted at a more convenient height for viewing, especially if you use a tripod to mount it on whilst manoeuvring the camera hand-held for low angle shots of, say, plants.

Everyone to their own, though. :)

You can get a right angle viewer for the eyepiece as well, or a field monitor that plugs into the camera, which I much prefer for flexibility.

Manual Focus Lens Use Question

Can you provide a shot of the lens itself, showing the 'bubbly' material you mentioned? Could be there's a problem inside the lens you won't overcome with exposure adjustments no matter how hard you try.

I see you live in Hampshire.

The RHS run photography courses at RHS Wisley, (A3/M25 junction), and Kew run them at Kew and Wakehurst Place. They use professional garden photographers.

I've attended courses at all three locations and learnt a lot, (although you'd never believe it if you saw my efforts!). Could be worth a little research on your part?

Obviously location, cost, etc., need taking into account depending on your personal circumstances, but I'd urge you to give them some consideration.

Just fyi OP, you don't need to send the camera in for AF adjustment unless it's seriously out of wack. It's a user adjustment.

Build quality of various 100mm f2.8 AF lenses

I find the OP's comments regarding the inferred poor build quality of the D FA WR version interesting, as a few reviews suggested it should have been a Ltd.

I agree. Great lens. That said, never tried the FA version.

If the OP was standing when he took the shot, as he appears to be, could the plane of focus actually be parallel all the way up from the models toes to the top of her head? I suspect the camera was tilted down, however slightly.

As suggested, take another shot with the camera on a tripod at right angles to a brick wall, etc.

If it's an f2.8 lens, f8 should give you optimum sharpness.

The 12-24 is a great and versatile lens. I think IQ is up there with the Ltds, but with the lens hood on its a bit big!

Belt pouch for FA Limited Lenses?

I use one of these. Accessory Pack | OP/TECH USA Ok, it's a shoulder bag and not belt, but worth a look I suggest. The larger one takes all my Ltds plus 100 macro, x1.4 TC, plus a few other bits and pieces.

50-135mm sdm lens auto focus failure

My experience is the same as BFD.

I try to run my SDM lenses every two weeks, regardless of whether they've been used in the interim. I subscribe to two theories about SDM issues.

The first is simply they get 'sticky' if not used, so run them for a few minutes between near and far focus.

The second is that there are capacitors in the SDM units that lose their charge, and the units won't run until they're re-charged, so attach the lens, turning the camera, then leave alone for a few minutes.

I've found that sometimes when first mounted the lens won't run at all, but will after some minutes, but slowly. I keep working it, and after 5 minutes, good as new.

52 mm RC49 style hood/cpl/52-49 step up/lens, BUT, the hood might not be as effective because of its larger overall diameter.

Light, sturdy and cheap don't come together in a good tripod.

Be prepared to spend more, maybe on carbon fibre.

I'm intrigued, though. My 055XPROB is heavy but far from unsturdy.

Sensor Clening

Sorry Bob, the problem is more to do with you than Pentax.

I've shot Pentax for years, from the K100D onwards, and have never had 'major issues with the K100D sensor getting dirty every time I changed the lens'.

The very occasional mote of dust, yes, but never more than that.

My simple 'hygiene' involves making sure I'm not in a situation where there is airborne dust, that the mount end of the lens is clean, and that the camera mount is facing down when I change lenses.
