Photokina, Ricoh has Confirmed

Perhaps we are getting beyond even rumor here since this is at best idle speculation. But I would think something like Pentax announcing they will use a Samsung sensor in future would be front page news for all camera related sites. Now whether they would actually announce such a thing or just keep us guessing as to what is under the hood is another question.

That makes a lot of sense given there have been no leaks of any kind. Really hard to keep things buttoned up completely when there is actual hardware out in people's hands. But a strategic move like perhaps a move to a Samsung sensor could be kept very firmly under wraps.

Agree. There were at lot of 'issues' with the k-01 no EVF being one of them. But nothing that could not have been sorted out in follow on models. But they decided that instead of improving on it they would just drop it. I think that was a mistake and a K-02 with improvements might have succeeded. But we do not get to see the numbers so maybe it was really bad. :)

I filled out the online form, waited two days for them to contact me and when they did not just sent mine in. Never heard anything from them but got the upgraded camera back in 12 days. If you are waiting for them to contact you, that might not ever happen. Suggest you be proactive and contact them, or just send it in.

Have you spoken to Precision? I saw the message on the website but as far as I know that has been there since day one. I did the web order thing and posted mine to them the next day, September 6. I never heard a word from them. But the camera arrived back here on September 18th.

Perhaps they have run out of parts since I sent mine in but I was wondering if you are waiting on an email that is never going to come.

Now I understand. :):)

I think you miss my point. I'm not despairing. I'm happy as a lark. But there will be those who followed the overenthusiastic predictions (again) who despair and predict the 'D' word is happening after Photokina is over and nothing happened.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled wild, optimistic predictions........................

If postponed why are they having a GR meet & greet party?

That would be awesome. With the addition of the DA*11-18 and new versions of 16-50 and 50-135 they would have a really nice line up. Waiting for a prosumer K-3 replacement.

It's not really 'bad' at all. I have a nicely refurbished K-1II and more lenses than I know what to do with so I'm quite happy. Ricoh has in my opinion missed out on a number of opportunities but they might have valid reasons for that. Just because they look good from where I sit does not mean that the real numbers work out. But it does seem (to me) that they have not pushed through on some things that they should have if they wanted to grow their market share. But perhaps that is not their plan.
Exactly. I am tired of the roller coaster ride of unrealistic expectations followed by the depths of despair when reality sinks in. So I thought I would throw out some despair prior to the show. :):)

We will get at Photokina:
- Some sort of GR announcement
- A nearly finished DA*11-18
- And ........................ nothing else. Is that bad? Nope. It is the expectation of more that is bad. It's fun now but causes despair later.

I guess we differ. Perhaps I am just tired of the rampant enthusiasm with no basis in fact. Or perhaps I just felt like offering my opinion since everyone else seems to be able to do that without criticism. Or are only opinions that express unfounded, exuberant, unrealistic views welcome here?Oh come on. There are hundreds of k-mount bodies on ebay at any given time. And if Ricoh does not show some interest in continuing in the camera business there will be hundreds more.
So I should only post enthusiastic, positive comments so that the 'concerned' will feel better?
I am fully committed to K-mount most likely for life. But turning a blind eye to all the missed opportunities Ricoh has had is just sticking our heads in the sand. They have a minuscule portion of a rapidly shrinking market. Unless they see an opportunity to continue making money it would only be prudent to at least consider exiting that market when market forces shift.

---------- Post added 09-22-18 at 08:49 PM ----------

Agree, but there was nothing stopping them from fixing those issues and bringing out a K-02. Sony's first attempt was not perfect, it did not stop them from trying again.

But they owned that market and could have locked it up so tightly there would be no competition. Instead they just dawdled along with enough effort to move out the inventory of existing lenses. Then nothing.

As good or better than anybody else. But instead of even supporting it a little they just let it die.

Agree. But prudent might just mean looking at the numbers and saying enough is enough.

Oh, I'm not pessimistic. Just countering the wild speculation with some opposing views for the fun. :) I've got a recently upgraded K-1II, a K-3 and a K-3II. A DFA 15-30, DFA 24-70, DFA 28-105, DFA 150-450 for FF and a good selection of bought new APS-C glass as well.

And a very nice collection of Pentax vintage glass. So I am heavily invested in the Pentax ecosystem. And if they fold up tomorrow I would still stay with Pentax. There will be good bodies on the used market for at least 10 years and at my age that is likely long enough.

A big part of my point is that no matter what was said (or thought was said) at some point in the past things have changed. I do not believe there is, TODAY, any validity in any comments made months ago. Whatever Ricoh was thinking about must now be reevaluated in the context of Canon R, Nikon Z and Fuji GFX.

- They had the opportunity to go K-mount mirrorless by building on the K-01. They did not.
- They had the opportunity to control the medium format market. They let it slide into Fuji's lap.
- They had a valid small sensor mirrorless system with a good assortment of lenses in the Q. They have let it atrophy.
- They have the best APS-C lens line up in the business. Instead of capitalizing on it they are now 3 1/2 years since the last prosumer APS-C body with nothing new in sight.

Ricoh brings to my mind a company who buys a troubled buggy whip maker in 1908. How long do they keep believing it was a good idea?

No more a stretch than some of the other wild speculation. Just on the pessimistic side of the fence. The camera market has changed dramatically. Just because Ricoh said something months ago does not mean that they cannot change their minds due to market factors.

My personal opinion is that the current sensor / processor / bus has reached the limit of practical improvement. Many of the things that are constantly asked for here (4k video, faster AF, more dynamic range, faster write speeds) just might not be possible with the hardware that Pentax has been using. I am sure if they could do those things they would. So either they quit entirely, keep pasting bandages on ancient tech or make a clean break and start new.

What is 'new'? Who knows. Maybe a Samsung sensor / processor in a DSLR. Maybe a mirrorless of some kind. Maybe nothing............

No we don't. We know they said a long time ago they might be working on something. Since then much has changed. Maybe enough that Ricoh has decided to exit the camera business. Maybe enough to decide there is no future in DSLR and they must go mirrorless. Maybe, whatever..........

Expecting anything at this Photokina is nothing more than optimism overcoming reality. Just like always. But that's OK because everyone can just complain more after Photokina is over and nothing happens.
Which might even be true and the "meet & greet" implies that there might be a GR announcement. So not Pentax. If anyone is excited about a GR announcement I am happy for them. It is not something I have any interest in.

Where are the any leaks............................

Wonder why this forum goes through this same process before every show? I think this is now the fourth Photokina for me following the outlandish predictions and expectations. With the same predictable results. Nothing is going to be announced, nothing is going to happen at Photokina Pentax-wise. When / if Ricoh has something to announce they will do so. If they are even working on anything.

Just got my K-1mkII back from Precision. Mailed to them on September 6th and received back here on September 18th. So 12 days door to door. That is impressive.

I have had several very poor experiences with Precision camera but I have to say this experience was quite good. Their communication is still the same: as in zero. No acknowledgement that the camera was received or sent back. But I guess that is minor. They did a super job on the camera it came back spotless, calibrated and upgraded.

Had to reload all settings but other than that all seems fine. No chance to test anything yet.

Why Do YOU Stay With Pentax?

Tough decision to be sure. I stick with Pentax because they cover all my needs. All the things touted as areas that Pentax is lacking in are irrelevant, TO ME.

And perhaps most important to me: the camera fits my hands. I've tried nearly every other brand out there in the shops and they all feel awkward and poorly designed. For MY hands. So if someone wants to buy all my gear I would seriously consider other brands, but most likely stay with Pentax anyway. I don't see anything else out there that does what I want any better and certainly not at the price point Pentax does.

Is Pentax in the need of a M/L system?

I'm not so sure of that. The part about what they were expecting. We have used Ricoh copiers at our office as long as I've been there. They are well aware of 'paperless' and have an entire suite of solutions that cover scanning, storing and retrieving documents digitally. I got a several hour demo of the system and while it was more (and more expensive) than we need I was impressed.

The demo was in 2013 I think. I made a comment at the time about them buying Pentax. The reply was that they were very excited by this because of a number of technologies Pentax had for optical scanning related to document storage. Now the people I was talking with were 'business solution' people, not camera people so I've no idea if what they said had any validity. They seemed to only vaguely understand that Pentax was a camera. Their focus was on document handling. But Ricoh is well aware of the marketplace for their core products and view themselves as far more than a 'copier' company.

Not sure how 'informed' he was but my dad's method on cameras was to go to Best Buy and grab whatever was on sale at the time. He did that every 3 years or so. But he was a film guy and rather knowledgeable about film. To him the camera did not matter as much as the film. So when he moved to digital I think his thought process got a little stuck. :) He has an extensive assortment of non-functional cameras going back to the 1980's, all dumped in a drawer. Seemingly no two of the same brand either.....

Absolutely none. And please note I said "uninformed, possibly first time" buyers. So that list is solely based on me wandering the camera displays at Best Buy and listening to people who are looking at cameras. None of those things on my list are in any way a criticism of MILCs. Just observations of people who have little or no camera experience.
There is (I am sure) a completely different list of reasons that informed (not first time) buyers would use. And I am completely unqualified to make that list. :)

I suspect he meant that a 'better' photo (for some definition of better) can be achieved if the user interface makes it easier/faster/simpler to actually make a given photo. What features of an EVF that might improve the users ability to capture a particular image is what is questionable.

An example might be focus peaking in the EVF or highlight clipping showing on the EVF. Do those features result in a 'better' image? Maybe, maybe not.
