New Year, and hope PENTAX/Ricoh will have a good year.

I’ve been thinking of getting into medium format and looking at the 645z and Fuji.

Fuji is clearly investing into medium format while Ricoh seem to have just let it go into a state of hibernation. The 645z and the lenses available are fine for what I would like to try so I don’t have any concerns there but I don’t want to spend 7-8 thousand dollars and need to get service and have to wait months because they don’t have parts for it, we’ve all seen the threads about K1’s and some current lenses taking that long what would it be like on a 645z, are they even still producing new ones or are they still selling older production run bodies?

If you really want to shoot long lenses just get yourself a Canon or Nikon setup, Pentax isn’t the brand for for it.

No, Canon has their own service and for CPS members you can get two day turnaround service or loaners if it will take longer. You do have to qualify with enough points for gear you own and itís $100 a year. It also has other benefits that make it well worth it.

Iím not sure if Nikon has their own service people, I would think they do also since they offer the same type of service for NPS members.

Pentax could really use a program like it, I think people have said in the past they had something for 645 users not sure if they still do.

A few threads about this type of service so it's not uncommon, this is an area that Pentax could really improve on.

For birding and wildlife the 600/4 is the most useful. When I bought my Canon 600/4 IS II I looked at the 400/2.8 also but he extra reach is used more than an extra stop of light is needed and then being able to get to 840/5.6 with the 1.4tc and 1200/8 with the 2x tc is great.

The 2x does soften the image some so I only use it when I have no other options. I was in Yellowstone in September and saw a brown bear on an elk carcass and it didn't like the ravens getting close so I wasn't going to try to get closer, I just put the 2x on and took what I could at a safe distance.

They don’t go cheap at the Olympics, that’s why Canon and Nikon update their flagship bodies for them.

The 1DX3 and D6 will both be out then and both Canon and Nikon will have huge CPS and NPS support on site, and I’m sure you will see more Sony users there now since they finally have 400/2.8 and 600/4 lenses.

No, Ricoh will not release a 400 2.8 they don’t have the buyers for a $10,000 lens.

They are not in the sports and wildlife market that such a lens is used for. If they would release a lens like that they would also have to develop a new body to compete with the 1DX2, D5 and A9 and they don’t seem to have the budget and again the buyers for those types of bodies.

New HD Pentax-D FA* 85mm F1.4 still coming in 2019?

I wonder at what point does a lens get put on the roadmap. The 85 1.4 was on in February of 2017, getting close to three years. Do they just put it on when they decide to look into making a lens or do they reach a point in development and then put it on?

People have been looking forward to this lens for years and still nothing. Maybe they should hold off putting things on the roadmap until they are further along in development and have a more realistic time for release.

Looking at how Canon has announced and released RF lenses to me seems like a better approach. I don’t think anyone expects Ricoh to release at the rate Canon has done but if they announce and release in a reasonable timeframe I think that would be a better approach than teasing users for years.

What are your thoughts for deciding to sell (or not)

It depends on if you have anything good or if you just have a bunch of $20-30 lenses.

Last year I sold off a bunch of old things that were given out as Christmas gifts from a old job. They were only $30-50 items and I had about 15 of them but after buying boxes and packing material and then ebay fees it didn't seem worth it.

Ratings and Reviews do you trust them and why?

I find reviews on brand specific forums not very useful, people are too biased in their opionions and generally have no first hand comparison with other brands products.

I try to find long term reviews of products actually being used and not just reviews of studio shots.

I also look at images on Flickr from an item I'm looking at getting, this can be a little misleading though with all the post processing that can go into a picture. I do mostly all wildlife shooting and find most wildlife photographers don't go crazy with post processing, not like landscape or astro photos that are heavily processed in photoshop with layers and stacking.

I also look at what professional wildlife photographers are using, if it can handle the conditions they are working in to make a living then it will work for me as a hobbyist.

I do a lot of 20x30 metal prints and have them hanging in my home. I switch some out from time to time to change things up but have a couple that I like so much they stay up all the time.

Is a Fa*600/F4 Really worth it?

Return on investment, lots of enjoyment. Iíve done two trips to The Grand Teton and Yellowstone the past two years a trip to the Everglades this past February and several other trips closer to home where I got to get out and find wildlife. Iím in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Alaska, or Africa next year, I think Alaska will be where I end up.

Photography is just a hobby I donít need to make money from it and I know Iím not good enough to make enough money from it. Why do you have to make money from it if you have a 600 F4 ?

You may think Iím nuts for spending the money I have on equipment and thatís fine, we all have are own opinions.

Well even on the review of the lens on here says it has more CA than what is expected on a modern prime lens.

And I moved on to Canon for the 600 F4 IS II and donít have those problems anymore.

The da560 at 5.6 is horrible with chromatic aberration, lots of purple images. Not sure how that will affect astro photography for wildlife it was a pain in the butt.

What do people shoot with these? I've never seen any images from 360 cameras on things like instagram or flickr and don't think I have ever seen one of these out in the wild.

I can understand the tech for some industrial uses but for the photographer that walks into B&H and buys a Theta I don't get it.

Pentax 150-450 transport question
Posted By KiloHotelphoto

This is way to big of a bag for a 150-450, I used it with the Da560 then with my Canon 600 F4. The da560 was to skinny for it, it moved around in the bag and I had to add extra padding the 600 F4 fit well in it.

A 150-450 would require so much added padding to keep it from bouncing all around you would probably be carrying more padding than camera and lens.
