Help, Pentax ME Super's mirror is stuck up ...

Currently I own 4 ME Supers. 2 are completely dead beyond resurrection and 1 I raised from the dead and the last one I've got it for $20 and is in good condition.
This tells 2 stories. ME Supers are getting old and they were not made to last - need services. Secondly, they are plentiful and dirt cheap - if one dies get another.

Anyway, the one I raised from the dead had exactly the same symptom of yours. Although the symptom is same the cause maybe different but this is how I did.
What I found was that the mechanical gear on the bottom of the camera has jammed. I opened the bottom plate and poked with small screwdriver here and there and got it de-tangled (sorry I am not a camera reparier but I opened another camera and checked how it should be). I cleaned and put some oil on the moving parts and bingo! now it works like a charm.

M series maybe more advanced but I like the feel and weight of the Spotmatics (I heard Ks used same Spotty body).

I have a Spotmatic SP and I like it very much except that it has fungus in viewfinder, no split focusing screen and I donít like stop down metering. So, SP-F will be perfect for me.

Thank you, Titrisol. :)

The meter lights lit so I think the battery contact is fine.
The power doesn't seem to getting to the shutter mechanism.

I am looking to get a Spotmatic F or a K series camera.

Changed the batteries to new ones and still no good.

I am really p@#ed off with ME Super. This is my second copy and I have to say MES is the most unreliable camera ever made by any.

It used have stuck mirror - fixed but ruined a good film and outing.
Jammed film rewinder - fixed but ruined a good film and outing.
And now this ...
Even if I fix this I don't think I can take it out for a shoot.

Well it is now in the bin.

Anyone suggest any good reliable camera in M42 or K mount (I have M42->PK adapter)?

In both auto and manual modes, the shutter speed doesn't seem to change.
For example, 1/2000 and 4sec show same shutter speed of, I think 1/125 - same speed as 125x. I know, this is the camera's mechanical shutter speed without batteries.
The meter light indicates proper shutter speeds - meaning batteries are in good shape.

Throw in the bin or is there easy way to fix?

M42/other lenses with "character"

When it comes to bokeh, I'd say Pentacon 135/2.8 Zebra has it all.
But when it comes to special 'character', I have to suggest Trioplan 2.8/100.
Some people don't like it's funky bokeh but it has this special ability to makes the subject glow.

Wasn't K mount developed by Zeiss?
If so, pentax and others may have got the license from Zeiss.

Did the seller disclose the sticky mirror issue?
If he/she didn't, try to get the full refund including shipping by starting a dispute.
I have done that before. Most time though, we agreed on part refund.

I clean swept AGFA Vista 100 from a supermarket about a year ago. A total of 20 rolls.
Awful colours and un-natural grainy. Absolute rubbish.

Thanks.
Agitate first minute then stand for 2 hours. I always use minimum 3ml of Rodinal per roll of 36 frames or 120.

Thanks again guys.
Sounds like I am getting either LX or MX with winder. Although I like my little ME Super its mirror slap is very pronounced compared to others. I know it's not fair to compare ME Super with Nikon F3 or other Pro cameras.

I am using a wide range of FL's and because the vibration I had to use faster shatter speed which limits usability of the camera. That's all.

I concur. But given the same mirror shock the heavier camera will damp the shock better. I guess what I really want is a 35mm pentax film camera that has best mirror slap dampen system.

You guys rock. :)
Great recommendations.
I've never thought about adding weight to ME Super. MD would be ideal.
I will either get the MD for MES or get LX or get both - good reason to get another cam.

Well, my ME Super is too small and light that camera shake is an issue.
Since I have a heaps of M42 lenses and M42->PK adapter I want to stay with Pentax. I also have a Spotmatic so K mount camera would be good but not necessary.
I am used to Nikkon F3 so I want something that heavy.
I am looking at MX or LX. Are they heavy and not vibrating when mirror kicks up?

I've just secured another ME Super. ;)
This one is not working but in good cosmetic condition. Almost free :)
I am going to use this as a donor for my other copy and do a CLAT (T for transplant).

Maybe Pentax cameras and I have some sort of disastrous chemical reaction that puts us off :( just like me and my ex-gf.
I had/have more than 20 SLRs and none of my Contaxes, Canons, Nikons, Prakticas, and Minoltas had this problem.

Having said that, I still rate the Pentax cameras highly. The SP that still works is a gem. I will CLA the ME Super and if that fails I will get another one.

I read Volco244T's thread about his/her jammed ME Super.
Mine is slightly different failure, so I start a new thread.

My recently acquired ME Super's mirror kicks up but doesn't like to come down.
I have to remove the lens and touch some levers and then it flips back down.
It only happens in Av mode. Okay in manual mode. It is very frustrating.
Is this a common problem with Pentax camera?
I am asking because my very first camera, ME ended up in the bin because this mirror problem.
My Spotmatic F also sufferred the same problem and it too ended up in the bin.
To date I had 4 Pentaxes and 3 had this mirror problem.

How can I fix this, anyone?

What's 'the other adapter', Bill?
Are you referring to one with wider flange?
Or is there other adapters that will ruin the camera?
I am asking because I want to know, even though I ordered a Pentax adapter.

cheers
Edward

Cheers guys,

Call me a cheapskate but this genuine Pentax adapter is more expensive than my ME Super :(
Well, still cheaper than buying a set of K mount lenses ... :)

cheers
Edward
