Film camera recommendations?

There was a time where I was looking for exactly what you're describing and went through many of the cameras suggested. I finally settled on the Program A/Program Plus. Sure, it has the shutter speed buttons like the ME Super. But honestly, went I want to grab this camera, I'm usually in program or AV mode, seldom in manual mode. If I do want to override the meter, then I'm using the EV comp dial instead of switching to manual mode.

I started posting photos of my cameras on Instagram. Here's my MX, Program A's (sliver and black), SV, and Auto 110 Super. Little tidbits of each are on Instagram but I'm too lazy to copy-paste here.

Somewhat related to the capping issue... it looks like the problem was limited to the first 3 frames (assuming the file order reflects the shooting order). Maybe your K1000 needed some "exercising" after a long period of not being used?

And yes, my local lab has gotten noticeably busy in Covid-times.

I've become a fan of the Program Plus/A. Slightly fewer features than the Super Program/A but they seem to be available in better shape and a lower price point. The only real downside is they're battery dependent. Also, don't overthink it too much. Get one in good shape and start shooting. Assuming you didn't get ripped off you'll be able to sell and recover most of what you spent if you find you want something else.

That makes sense. I was hoping it would work projected. Had grand visions of projecting outdoors.

So I pulled the trigger on the Asahi stereo adapter and viewer (M42 version) that was for sale on the Marketplace a few weeks ago. I burned the entire roll the weekend before the wildfires out here in the northwest US turned our sky smoky. The scan with color cast correction looks better than the projected slide. And I can't get the 3D effect with the projected slide like I can on my 21" monitor. I was projecting onto a wrinkly surface so that probably affected my viewing. The 3D effect does pop better with the viewer. Hope to get some better examples with some fresh Ektachrome.

If you haven't already done so, see if you qualify for the free download of Silverfast SE: Download SilverFast Scanner Software for your Epson Scanner. It's quit better than the Epson software, although a bit of a learning curve.

I use a rocket blower. It gets most of the dust off. For the rest, I've resigned myself to spot-remove in Lightroom for the print-worthy scans. Otherwise, I leave as-is.

For storage, I use PrintFile pages and store in a Vue All Safe-T-Binder.

My workflow is to scan are medium resolution (1200-ish dpi) to JPG. Then I import into Lightroom for keywording, etc. For prints, I rescan up to 6400 dpi (I know there's little gain but I may want to print big) to TIFF.

I have an Epson V550 at home. It works fine for me and print up to 11" X 17" from scans using it. I shoot medium format in addition to 35mm so a flatbed is kind of necessary. I also scan 8 X 10 darkroom prints as well. I got the SilverFast SE free download for it and it's quite a bit better than the Epson software.

Download SilverFast Scanner Software for your Epson Scanner

I'm a member of a community darkroom where we have an Imacon. Frankly, it's a pain to use considering I don't make giant prints. I only mention this to say the Epson V550 does a good job for me. And I might consider upgrading only because I started shooting 4x5 and the V550 can't scan those.

Looks like you have a DSLR and macro lens so you're almost set up for DSLR scanning. All you need is a light source, copy stand (or tripod), and a negative holder.

If you want a dedicated scanner, you can find a used Epson V550 or V600 for $100-150 USD. The Epson software is free.

I think the lens is a Sears-branded Ricoh. Minimum aperture is F16 on those. On the Chinons it's F22.

Item for Sale
35mm Film Kit: MZ-3, FA 43mm Limited, AF280T - Tested!

Asking Price
400.00 USD

Item Location
Oregon (United States)

Item Description
If you're looking for an autofocus 35mm body but nervous about spending the money on an questionable MZ-S, the MZ-3 is the body to get. The MZ-3 has been repaired by Advanced Camera in Portland, Oregon, so you don't have to worry about plastic gear failure. The FA43 was bought from another forum member. It's the "made in Vietnam" version but I've been happy with it's performance and results. The lens includes all the accessories. The AF-280T flash includes the hard-to-find wide angle adapter and case.

Everything is clean. The MZ-3 has some minor exterior scuffing. Everything functions except the built-in flash does not work (hot shoe does work, see note on repair invoice). I never bothered to replace the battery in the date back so I don't know if it works (battery is removed to prevent acid leakage).

This kit has been tested (camera, lens, flash). See sample photo on Fuji Pro 400H. No issues with the LCD, film transport motor, autofocus, TTL flash.

I can send the full size pictures if you want a closer look.

Would prefer to sell as a kit. But open to offers.

I'll eat the shipping and insurance within the US. Willing to ship outside the US if you pay for shipping + customs minus $20 USD. Message me for a quote.

MX, LX or Super Program

If we're talking "deserted island" camera, I'd go with the MX.

I've gone through just about all the K's and M's (have not handled an LX). The MX is my favorite, even though I don't use it as often. It's kind of the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic of cameras, kind of boring, not many bells or whistles, but reliable, not too sexy but sexy enough.

I actually like the Program A as my everyday, always with me camera. The slightly better ergonomics than the Super Program/A and ME Super outweigh the additional functionality of the Super Program/A for me. If I need TTL flash then I'll pick up my AF camera. And I don't use shutter priority. Finding clean Program Pluses/As seem easier to finding clean Super Programs/As.

Program Plus, stepless shutter speeds?

I can't seem to find if the Program Plus has stepless shutter speeds in auto mode in the manual or any marketing materials. This feature seems common for similar mid-80s cameras in the same class. And I find it odd it's not document if it was a feature on the Program Plus, which makes me think it wasn't. But that's equally odd. Maybe it was so ubiquitous it didn't need to be said?

BTW, I'm loving the Program Plus, more so that the Super Program and ME Super.

I forgot how much fun it is to use the Q as a long distance wildlife cam. I wanted to identify this wasp/hornet tending a nest on our house. It turns out it's a non-aggressive European paper wasp, so we're going to leave it alone.Taken with a Tele-Takumar 200mm F5.6. ISO 1600, 1/125, F11.
