Whilst stumbling around the Internet I came across this Takumar lens for sale:

????! - ASAHI PENTAX/??? ?????? TAKUMAR LENS...

I'm not suggesting anyone buy it - it seems to be riddled with fungus, but I thought someone might be interested in seeing the original packaging, case & pamphlet etc. Maybe it will bring back some memories for some :)

This is great news! A couple of questions if I may:

Do you have any issues with metering? I noticed an earlier thread where someone said the light metering with an S screen was problematic.

How dark does the viewfinder become when you stop down beyond f4? Is f8/f11 a realistic option?

You just need to be creative Norm, sell your mind.

I'm reminded of the Monty Python sketch where a guy pays to have an argument with someone else. Are you up to it?

Yes, it is a fine lens. I had one but for some reason it just didn't gel with me. I've already got an FA 85 1.4 so I've got the big, fast 85 covered.

I had a Super Takumar that I sold a couple of years ago, and I really liked the look of the images.

Hi, thanks for the offer but, as good as the M85/2 is, I'm really only after the 1.8.

Cheers.

NorthCoastGreg could take brilliant shots with the bottom of a coke bottle! He's an amazing photographer IMO. Give him an A or FA and see the results. :)

I have all 3, and like them all for different reasons. The M is delightfully small, it's great to have a FF ultra-wide in such a small package, and has excellent flare resistance. The A and FA are both optically superior, mainly with respect to corner sharpness. They are both larger, but still very small.

If I could only keep one, I would choose the A due to its superior build quality compared to the FA, especially the focus feel - it's a dream to use. Luckily I don't have to! :)

Looking for Wide Angle lens recommendations that don't cost the earth.

I keep seeing this trope. I've had both the Sigma 10-20/3.5 and 8-16 and the 8-16 is better in every regard (at least my copies). I love the 8-16 so much that even after I sold it going to FF I bought another one because I missed it so much, even though it's on APS-C. (I also re-bought another DA15.)

I'm not saying the 10-20/3.5 is a bad lens, it's great, but the Sigma 8-16 IMO is superior in most regards (for my needs). I guess I'm saying that, at the very least, the notion that the 10-20/3.5 is unequivocally the best choice should be challenged.

YMMV.

A lot depends on:

- what is important to you in a wide angle lens (e.g. moderate field curvature, flare resistance, distortion, build quality etc.)

- how wide do you want to go, i.e. how wide is "wide" to you?

- what kind of budget do you have?

I have a thing for wide-angle lenses, I have a lot and have tried many more - it's kind of hard to give solid recommendations without further info, but a few stars for APS-C are the DA 15, Sigma 8-16 and the Bower/Rokinon/Samyang 14 2.8 - all for different reasons.

I've also found that you can get a lot of copy variation with some wide angles - if you're communicating with a seller ask for some example shots to look for decentering.

The Sigma 8-16 has pretty good coma performance and is usually sharper than the 10-20's (depending on the copy of course).

Even though I shoot full-frame it and the DA15 are the two APS-C lenses I keep because they're so good and there's no FF equivalent for them.
