Bag recommendations for 645z and 3-4 lenses?

I resisted buying a F-Stop Guru for that same set up. Eventually bought it with a medium pro slope I think it was, perfect bag for me. Only just fits it but that is the appeal for me as it's not too big to be lugging around. Typically 645Z plus 25, 45-85, P67 150 and some times the 120 macro. Always a whack of drop in filters though.

If you ever get the chance to move to a smaller sensor.............don't! I moved from a micro 4/3 setup as I was really unhappy with the image quality. The line is that hte best camera is the one that you have with you and it was put out by photographers with smaller cameras. I have images from the m4/3 setup and really want to go to the same locations with the 645Z to take them all again even though that moment in time will never be recreated.

Last year I went on my biggest photo trip ever in terms of exercise to Ecuador and took the 645Z etc and paid particular attention to how it was carried (with a rather expensive F-stop backpack). I know that you know how to carry it all Matt an that it isn't about weight but about money but for me, what was a factor until I started carrying it and then it wasn't, if that makes sense.

Strangely, I also felt that I was using a bit of a toy with the m4/3 setup as it was so light. Build on the 645 setup, don't jump, don't even think about it!

Cable release socket failure

Mine went too. Rather than subjecting it to Pentax service I bought the wireless release and it's all good. One word of caution, the release is tiny, it's an example of too small. I ended up using some electrical tape wrapped around it and a key chain to make the thing bigger.

Need a backpack for my 645Z

I resisted F-Stop bags due to price and eventually caved and bought the Guru I think it was with the medium slope ICU. I took it, the 645Z and 3-4 lenses including the 400A and my bad back to Ecuador for 3 weeks last fall. Highly recommended. It does a great job of keeping the weight evenly distributed between shoulders and waist when the waist strap is done up.

645Z remote cable socket problems?

Mine went last October. I reported it to my dealer but as I was about to travel I just bought the wireless one. I then taped it to a keychain to make it bigger and candidly, I don't want to buy a back up or be without this for 10 weeks so it will stay broken.

I tested my 400A with the 2X TC and decided to crop as the IQ was horrendous so I share your findings Matt. this was some time ago so don't have images and crops handy but it really wasn't even close.

What bag/pack?

Another F-Stop vote. I can't remember the size but I think it is the Lotus or a predecessor. Most importantly, it has the medium slope icu in it. I have maybe another 6 bags sat in the closet now. I spent 3 active weeks in Ecuador with this bag and despite a bad back the pack did a good job of taking the weight off my back with the waist strap done up.I had a 645Z, 35A, 120/4, 80-160, tripod as well as food, raincoat, sunscreen (mountain weather!!) and a full set of grads. The bag as packed tight and maybe weighted 20lbs + . Hikes were often 6 hours or more. I can't recommend this bag highly enough.

Just phoned them, they are labelled used but good as new and they got a killer deal from Pentax US so wanted to ship them out from there. It is indeed Christmas. He got 5 28-45's, all gone and 2-3 25's, and they're all gone. No more to follow.

Generally though for Canadians, we don't get those same free shipping options for packages that remain domestically shipped in the US. I'll check Monday to confirm.

funnily enough, the day before I had sold a Leica 35 Summilux and had told my wife I wanted to sell a bit more stuff to buy the 28-45 as the 25 was impossible to find. I would have bought either but preferred this so it worked out wonderfully!

Why DFA25/4 and DA25/4 Discontinued So Quick?

If the DA and DFA are identical except for the lens hood why can't you just swap lens hoods?

I saw an expired listing on bay for $4800 for a near new lens in Japan but like many others I would welcome the addition of it to my bag. Would have to sell gear to do it but it seems worth it to me.

This isnn't the first time that I have read that Pentx felt like the 28-45 did replace the 25 so clearly for them they feel it did replace the 25. I for one would love to see another 25, not sure if a 21 would be too wide for me but right now, 35 isn't wide enough and I might need to start weight training to carry the 28-45 around.

Itshimitis had better be right because that's what I do, ie expose leaning to the left of the histogram, if my scene appears to have highlights that might blow out rather than mess around with it I'll just under expose by however much I think I might need to to save the highlights while not blocking the shadows too much. As you can judge, it's a very unscientific process for me :)

Planning gear list for France in May 2016

I think the OP's bravery is in bringing all those lenses! I've just returned from 3 weeks in Ecuador and shot almost exclusively with a 35 and 80-160 with an occasional yearning of something around 200, maybe 300. Given that I found myself needing more width than reach and indeed ended up stitching a few to compensate I'd say bring the 28-45 and 80-160. I also packed a vest so that if the airport tried to stop me carrying the other lenses (that were largely unused except for the 120 macro) then I'd end up wearing them. I didn't have to but that roller bag may get the wrong attention at check in. I brought an F-stop back pack but largely so that I could carry and wear the right clothing etc for the 3 seasons that we would inevitably encounter in the ONE day!

Plus one on the need for a WA prime in the twenty somethings, the 28-45 just strikes me as a bit too much of a beast unless you want to drive to your landscape shoots.

One week in on a three week trip and having garnered as much advice and guidance as possible on gear to take a few thoughts on how that worked out.

1. Thanks to Unkipunkifor his inadvertent guidance on the F-stop backpack and Capture Pro plate. I was an advocate for another nameless bag but after a couple of 10k hikes at altitude the F-stop Guru was ideal. Witht he waist strap it sits n the waist and not on the shoulders.

2. I brought the 35, 45-85, 80-160, 120 macro and 300 and really should have brought the 35 and 80-160 and maybe the 120 macro but could have lived without that.

3. I wish I had bitten the bullet and bought the 28-45, the 35 was almost wide enough for one location in particular (Lake Quilatoa, look it up), I think the 28-45 may have done it but definitely the 25. Had to resort to stitching but ther egoes the Lee Big Stopper. Oh well, I'll have to come back.

4. There are some wonderful opportunities at local markets for street photography but the 645Z is useless for that. My other camera is a DXO One and it is phenomenal.

5. Grads are a must. Exposure blending and luminosity masking will help definitely but when it's bright it's bright.

6. It seems that I am down to a 2-3 lens kit, I think I'll have to sell a child to get one of the widest lenses!

7. Bring plenty of storage, I'm absolutely not shutter happy, a product of film, but I'm plowing through cards!!

300mm and crop or 300mm and 2x TC?

Trouble is I don't have the 1.4 TC :) I tested the 2x a bit yesterday on the 400 as the light was fading to give myself a better idea and it really seems like putting the lens cap back on. I needed an iso of 6400 to equal 800 for shutter speed and fstop, very surprising to me. I'll probably bring it as the incremental weight is negligible when I throw the other 16 tonnes of glass in the bag!

I'll have a tripod so I'll probably use it as a monopod and fix the ballhead for some steadiness if that helps in the decision.
