After my aperture block failure I have bought:
2 *Eneloop XX Pro Pack of 8 Batteries Mignon AA 2550 mAh minimum 2450 mAh-BK - 3HCCE Including High Quality Kraftmax Battery Boxes (2* 26.94 Euro) and
2 *Hahnel AA Battery Holder for Pentax K-r/K-30 DSLR Cameras (2 * 11.22 Euro)

With total price of 76.32 Euro, and never looked back :)
I do not even take charger with me any more, with one pack of Eneloop's I can make more than 1000 photo's,
having two holders means I can swap them very quickly, no time lost while shooting
and icing on the cake - those battery boxes are very practical

Survey with shutter count and aperture block or shutter failure.

I filled in form, but I was not sure if shutter count is the latest photo one, or when camera failed.

So here is a bit more qualified data:

Camera PENTAX K-50
Date manufactured: 2013:08:30
Date bought: 2014:01:26
Failed: yes
Date failed: 2014:07:06
Shutter Count Failed: 11,225
Reparation cost: 0 (under warranty)
Part replaced: Diaphragm control block [NM D13-301]
Date the latest photo: 2016:08:06
Shutter Count the latest photo: 32,879

I have to add that I has similar symptoms the first time already in the first month of camera use,
but it was during ski trip on quite cold weather and I attributed it to the low temperature as camera started working after warming it up and off/on cycle.

The time it failed (on 2014:07:06) it was warm weather and I was shooting burst with battery that was not full (yellow indicator).

Nothing helped the second time and the camera went to the service, where the problem disappeared when trying to show it.
Nevertheless the repair was done and Diaphragm control block [NM D13-301] was replaced.

Since than I shoot 21,654 photos without issue, but switched to Eneloops, trying to keep them always in green, and avoided burst if it got to yellow.
Perhaps unrelated, but I am still not proven wrong :)

I was very happy with the service (Belgium/France).

I am not among those many people, simply because evidence does not show it.

Indeed, again, pity that camera does not detect it and offers some diagnostic.

The service report says that part replaced is:
Diaphragm control block [NM D13-301]

Googling for it I do not find any other K50 reference,
but find K30 reference to French forum where the problem was not mirror flopping, but underexposure:
K30 - Retour SAV suite photos sombres

I agree, but when one's brand new camera malfunctions with such endemic issue, this is very little consolation.

Indeed, my camera was repaired under warranty and I shot 1500 photo's since then :)

I see your point of collapsing too many different issues under the same name,
and again, I would hope Pentax builds in some self-diagnostic with distinct error codes to help everybody ...

Would you suggest different name for this thread?

Well some Pentax cameras seem to malfunction without giving any diagnostic messages,
so users are left to their own devices in describing what happens  .
"Mirror flop" is catchy name so it sticks perhaps too much ?
Any better suggestion?

Exactly the same as mine :(

---------- Post added 07-02-14 at 09:22 AM ----------

Mine was 1.01, but it is surely not the firmware issue.

It should not

Indeed, exactly like mine.

Mine was serviced, so far so good.

Finally after 16 days the camera is back from service.
It is just within end of the month deadline that was agreed and
with all friendly follow up from Belgian service,
I am very happy with it.

Now the actual reparation,
it says that part replaced is:
Diaphragm control block [NM D13-301]

I hope that's fixing the problem.

Still now my "ultra all-camera-sounds hearing" detects
previously unheard quite muffled sound some short time after photo is taken.
I could try to measure it,
but it so exactly coincides with preview image appearing on the display,
that I had to switch the preview off to exclude unlikely relationship between the image and the sound.
My guess would be mirror "parked" in some resting position;
any similarity to HD heads being parked is purely my imagination - sorry about it.

I am happy to have camera back and shooting can continue,
I missed some nice opportunities.

I'll report status in a month time, at the of July.

Thank everybody
Rgds

I used AA battery holder, and then swapped to stock one, as it kept flopping.
It did not make any difference.
I mainly use AA battery holder as I have several sets.

Camera delivered to the service center, and as Murphy says, it started working as soon as it got there :(
It will still go to France to have mirror checked, but who know what, if anything, will be done.
Very friendly people at Belgian service were sympathetic to my problem, but they said that such endemic problems can be difficult to repair :( :(
I let you know what happens.

Is the following video OK:

I am itching to try to "solve" it somehow, but keeping in this state should allow proper diagnostic, so I do not try anything.

It is very annoying, even if she has a backup. It surely has to go back to service

Hi,

I have seen quite some posts for other models mirror flopping, but none for K50?

I have purchased it end of January 2014.
It exhibited mirror flopping problem, quite soon after the purchase, but only once and it was resolved after power off/on cycle.
I attributed it to cold February weather and happily used camera till last Saturday
when, well on quite warm, but not really hot weather, started with mirror flopping problem that does not stop :(

I can shoot in live view, but otherwise it is unusable, the viewfinder is dimmed, and it even does not autofocus, and sometimes does not power off.

Anybody else with K50 mirror flopping?

PS Still under warranty it goes for reparation ASAP

Yes it is, I cannot shoot without focus lock.

DoF is indeed very thin, between 1-2 mm.

Thanks

Thanks.
I did shoot cca. 1000 photos, and started looking why I am not so happy.
My worry comes from comments like following ones making me think I maybe have bad copy:
- My bad copy was very soft @ 2,8 even after AFadjustments, had FF and BF.
- Only thing I would want to borrow from other review is that this lens produces "brutally sharp" images even at f2.8.
- I must first say that the lens arrived with a bad front focus problem. I sent it to Amplis Foto (in Canada) to have it calibrated under warranty. It came back spot on.
- I bought this lens a year ago. It had got a front focus issue and have calibrated it at Tamron Germany.
- I was a little worried after I received my my first copy of this lens, it was soft and appeared to have a FF issue. After several conversations about the quality of this lens on two diffrent forums I sent ot back to B&H for replacement.
I must say that the second copy is much bettter then the first, as Ben put it in one of his posts "I consider it to fall in to my "Brutally Sharp" category" and I agree with his statement.

- Pretty sharp at 2.8, outstanding stopped down. Mine seems to be a very good copy.

Original photos (full size) can be found at f2.8, f3.2 and f4.0

Thanks

Thanks :)

Perhaps I look too critically and cannot expect better quqlity,
my main concern was possibility to have bad copy

Yes, Hoya UVH67 HMC, will do.

Very good point, thanks.

Great practical advice, thanks a lot.

I need it mostly for the same ocassion, and will try :)

AFA is FocusTuned to -3.

Thanks a lot for detailed and very useful answer.

Well, I try to spend as much as possible quality time with my kids,
and this particular DoF Calculator I used already till my head was spinning.
It was usefull, but quality time ... you know what they say about difference between theory and practice ...

Thanks

---------- Post added 05-30-14 at 10:10 PM ----------

No, surely not enought not to ask here ;)

Indeed, I need this lens when there is no much light.

I try to avoid extra lighting as much as possible, sometimes I must not use it.

Thanks on the answers

Hi,

I see some great photos with and comments about Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di (A09)
and I fear that my copy is not up to this level :(

f2.8 is IMHO quite soft (some say little bit soft?)

100% crop:

f3.2 is quite better:

100% crop:

f4 is even better:

I cannot return lens to shop, but it is still under warranty,
is there any hope in sending to a service?
