Thanks to everybody for participating. Some really great entries here.

Notes:

aaacb: I love the story this photo tells, especially the background cop.

RGlasel: really captures the theme. Great shot.

Vaskebjorn: no, that kitten does not look comfortable at all!

Bruce Clark: Great look into the macro world. Predators come in all sizes.

atupdate: Very evocative, even without the background story this is a photo that begs interaction.

Tamia: Thanks for your rescue work! Great photo!

Hattifnatt: Love it! Can't say I would have been comfortable doing that myself!

jacamar: Great shot! Coyote has a cataract maybe?

sealonsf: Oh my! Yeah, no...not getting me out there like that!

SpecialK: Looks exciting!

dlneubec: Cute. Very artistic. Very shy.

Terry C: Yeah, I hope not in my bathroom!

noelcmn: Would not want to be on the receiving end of her wrath!

Honorable mentions:

3rd Place - RGlasel: nice tension between the obvious discomfort and no apparent way out of the situation.

2nd Place: Bruce Clark: terror on a tiny scale!

And the winner is...

1st Place - atupdate: I really like this picture. I find it reminiscent of a painting by Giorgio de Chirico. When reviewing the entries, I tried to imagine them in a gallery with only the contest title as the description. I kept coming back to this shot.

Apologies to all. I was overly occupied with a work project and entirely forgot to follow up with my duty here. I will get this closed this evening.

Wow! Thanks! Color me surprised! Thanks for all the comments too.
I'll get the next contest up just as soon as I review the rules to find out what to do. 😃
I also want to look over what's been done recently, as I've been away from the forums a while and don't want to repeat anything.

Tell us more about your process. Shooting RAW? Processing workflow? Are you using the lens hood? Do you use any front filters? You turned IS off when using the tripod, right?
It is common for lenses to perform best stopped down a couple of stops. At least perform better than wide open.
While I have experienced low clarity/sharpness, I've not seen the glow you describe.
I shoot RAW+JPEG, and mainly use the JPEGs to decide which photos to process.
I've reduced the image size for posting here, but here's an example of a JPEG and the finished picture from the RAW file. Grey, cloudy day. Spent a lot of it shooting in light rain.
Finally, you might want to rent a higher quality long lens to see if that improves your results. Just my off-the-cuff thoughts.

It becomes illegal when applied to a class of people. For example: if there were a pattern of these "difficult" clients being black, or Catholic, or disabled, or gay, then you would be in the wrong.

Bud. The phrase you were reaching for is "nip it in the bud."

FWIW: I have used the LI90 in my K3 at -28F with only the most minor of performance loss. I was later shocked when using the LI109 in my K30 at -5F that I was having to swap in a warm battery about every 10-15 minutes.

What do you mean by "cold"?
Actual temperature matters.
Some folks call 40F a cold day.

I disagree. I think this thread was about using FF lenses on APS-C cameras, and the bulk of Pentax FF lenses available are pre-digital.
