Theme: Red Silhouettes
Exposure: f/2.0, 1/100s, ISO 400
Editing: Lightroom for exposure & color; Topaz Details to bring out texture in the hair and cape while reducing noise and also keeping the smoke looking smooth.
I went for kind of a graphic novel look while not stylizing it too much. I reddened the highlights, reduced saturation and lightened the red to increase the contrast of the back-lighting. Topaz Details was really helpful for managing levels of texture for different components of the image.
When we left for our vacation to California in mid-June I was anxious because I would have limited gear to try and catch a contest-worthy photo. One night while I was cooking bacon for dinner at my sister-in-law's house, the house filled with smoke, and in the living room I saw an intriguing array of lines caused by the setting sun shining through the window blinds and illuminating the smoke. I thought, "hmm, this has the making of a neat photo, I wonder what I can add to it..." and on cue, my niece danced into room, flapping her red bat cape. I saw broken-up back-lighting coming through her cape and knew I had something, but before I could grab my camera she fled the room. I ran to find her and told her dance and flap through the room one more time. I fired off a few shots, hoping I caught something decent, and went back to making dinner.
This shot stood out for me because it had all of the elements I saw when she first danced through - the smoky lines, the back-lit cape with lines on one side, the "bat-wing" pose. As an added bonus I noticed later that her hair puffs look like bat ears. If I had more time to compose I might have angled her a little more to add depth, and I also might have played around with slower shutter speeds. But I'm happy I was able to at least capture this moment.

I nominate this photo, it is a great illustration of visual impact: concrete vs. abstract, dramatic color palette, tension between the flow of the clouds and the water, etc. Great job!

Shot with a K-r + DA10-17
My intention was to photograph the fireworks themselves, but I noticed that the light from the fireworks gave an interesting foreground effect to the people watching. After a day full of parades and family and Rita's Italian Ice, my son was so happy laying there absorbing it all, and using the fish-eye I was able to frame both him and the fireworks in an interesting way. I only wish I had a tripod, I would've experimented with some longer exposures.
I used lightroom to lighten the greens a little, which I thought added more of a transition between the foreground and background. |

The 10% off coupon is relevant only when Amazon Warehouse is the seller, not any third party sellers. Amazon does not itself claim any used items to have a warranty, although it is possible to purchase a warranty from Square Trade, which of course you need to factor into the cost. The benefit of buying used from Amazon Warehouse is the easy 30 day return policy (full refund minus return shipping, unless it's not in the condition described, then return shipping is free.)
Edit: Coupon is expired

The code also works for the dual lens 02 + 06 kit, which brings it to $575 shipped.

Ah okay, I think this explains the difference - ProSite offers the ability to mark photos for sale at a given price, but it doesn't handle the payment: How can I mark my work as for sale on Behance?
So it's not as "pro" as I thought, though it seems at least as feature-rich as the SmugMug "Power" account ($60/yr) which I currently have.

From all the flame throwing on the DPR announcement page it looks like both PS and LR are the cloud versions. However the ProSite subscription is what sweetens the deal for me - if you would want that sort of thing anyway it's normally $100/year and it seems comparable to a SmugMug "Pro" account, which is normally $150/year. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that last point :)

I found one in a SoCal store near my sister - does anyone have experience having someone else pick up an order from Frys? On the checkout page it says the person picking up has to match the name on the credit card, but the confirmation email just says "bring this email to the store." I'm hoping there isn't much hassle...

Pentax SMCP-DA 35mm F/2.4 AL Lens
$149.95 + free shipping
It's been on "Backorder" forever, however I ordered one two weeks ago and I just received a shipping notice yesterday; so it looks like they got a few in and immediately fulfilled existing backorders. I never expected anything and I wasn't in a hurry to get the lens, so it's a win for me, but YMMV. http://www.huntsphotoandvideo.com/detail_page.cfm?ProductID=21987&mfg=Pentax&show=yes |

FYI I ordered this yesterday morning, and it arrived today.. looks as new, in the box with paperwork, S/N card, etc. And my $499 k-30/18-55 WR kit from Hunt's is coming tomorrow. So $705 for K-30 + 18-55WR + DA50, all shipped in < 2 days is not bad

Also, the DA 50mm f1.8 is only $116.95 when purchased with the K-30 - $616 for the K-30 + DA50 is not bad at all!
