hey AggieDad -- great shots. Really enjoyed the website. Loved the structures & some of the Tetons shots are wonderful. Detail on that eagle is killer! Overall website has a great look to it -- one suggestion I would make would be to also include a thumbnail structure in the galleries so you can jump back and forth to a particular shot (or did I miss this?). Anyway, nice work ….

I'll throw one more in the mix for you to consider -- my favorite 35mm camera of all time was the Canon T-90 -- these and the FD lenses can be had quite cheaply and it is an absolutely wonderful camera!

I'm still working on keeping my tripod legs out of landscapes at 15mm on the 15-30 …. can't imagine going this wide. Would enjoy seeing what it looks like through the viewfinder though ...

Wow, nice shot -- incredible sharpness on the fly. How many shots did you need to stack?

I know you said you want to stay manual but I think if you are going to be in a lot of buildings, churches and other dimly lit and often tight spaces, you really might want to reconsider and just take the 15-30 …

Have a great trip!

HI Cynog Ap Brychan - the sigma 180 is ok weightwise -- if you are finding it a little on the heavy side and are considering the 15-30 or 70-200 I would definitely try to find a store where you could pick them up and feel them, attach them to your camera to see if you like the weight and heft. I find them both, but especially the 70-200 to be significantly heavier than the sigma. For me the 70-200 is tripod only.

Five Favourite Lenses

At this time I would say:

Sigma 180mm macro -- love this for around the house and garden -- sharp with great bokeh
Leitax converted Zeiss 135mm f2 -- same reasons as the Sigma
Pentax dfa 15-30 -- more of a love/hate -- am enjoying it more than I expected and really like learning to better use the wide side but absolutely hate the weight and bulk of it
Lensbaby 56mm and 85mm velvet -- really like both -- just fun lenses that have a ton of uses for garden; family portraits etc. Both sharper stopped down than people give them credit for if you want to move from effect to natural.
Pentax dfa 70-200 -- another love/hate. Incredibly sharp; really nice bokeh; love the colors; hate the weight and size so it often gets left behind

Kasey, if you end up finding that you'd like to be closer to the 720nm filter you are still able to use an external 720nm filter on your 665nm camera -- it will cut out the wavelengths from 665 to 720; so no worries having chosen the 665 -- it simply gives you additional options.

Very nice work!

Funny, I was going to point out that many of the original posters complaints could be leveled at free-roaming kids to. The sad fact is there is simply a lot of incivility and lack of consideration. Don't get me started on the tour buses who unload a huge crowd of folks on a small overlook and the tourists who feel the absolute best shot has to be exactly in front of where your tripod is set up ....

That is quite the compact lens, and certainly beats lugging the 15-30. Any vignetting with an nd or circular polarizer on it?

From your gear it looks like you might enjoy macro work -- perhaps the Canon 500d filter or similar to get a little more magnification.

Wonderful shot … just wondering did you need to focus stack to get the orchids as sharp as you did or is this one exposure? Love the post-processing.

Absolutely fantastic shot! Didn't mind the flare at all but after seeing it without the flare I'd probably go flareless.

I've been there several times but not in at least 15 years. I saw the article about the deaths and wondered also how it was possible. In truth, I don't even remember it as being so steep a drop into the bowl that a fall would kill you.

I'd love to get back there -- I consider this and hiking the Zion River Narrows as two of the best hikes in the U.S. -- the first time you round that last bend and see the Arch standing there on the rim is truly stunning.

So, if I am understanding correctly engineering wise Pentax has several different types of af lenses and it would be difficult to design an af adapter to work with all or even some them -- FA lenses, KAF4, KAF3 all would need a different type of adapter?

After Thanksgiving my wife controls the stereo for a month so it's pretty much non-stop Christmas. We just listened to Chris Botti's and John Pizzarelli's Christmas albums … both were quite enjoyable for a lazy Sunday morning.

Love the Megadeth reaction. I actually like those guys commentary … Man, not to date myself, again -- saw Megadeth in a small NY club, I think it was the Palladium, shortly after the release of the first album -- they were still also playing a lot of the Metallica first album in the set -- Great show!

Even though some of the older lenses may be single coated this can be an advantage if you look to use an R72 or similar filter for infrared pics down the road. From some limited testing so far my 67 lenses offer the best hotspot performance both on my unconverted pentax k-1 and my full spectrum converted Sony A7rii.
