Nasty sensor accident, need cleaning / repair help

It's worth pointing out that the K-10d manual, and indeed all digital Pentax manuals, has a section on cleaning the sensor. See pages 211-13

First thing in the cautions list is: "Do not use a spray type blower."
Then they list the cleaning Kit O-ICK1 as an optional accessory.

So, too late for the OP, but lesson learnt and lets hope others reading this in the future will read the manual.

If that's worth $1,500, then does anyone want to buy my K-X for $150,000? I'll even throw in two rolls of film.

What REALLY matters in computer hardware?

This doesn't matter. It were a car, driving everywhere at 100% means your engine is too small or your foot is too heavy..
But a computer isn't like a car, 100% just means the computer has allocated up to 100% of the processor to the task, because it's available. A faster processor with more cores will still get allocated up to 100%. If not, you would have to wait longer.

Just ordered a few DA Ltd lenses! Good plan?

Yep. Same limiteds that I went for. They also work well as a three lens kit with my 18-135. This has become my travel setup.
The 35ltd requires a patient approach - not much good for point and shoot applications and if you don't pay attention to focus, you will miss. But take your time and the results are amazing.

Lens sounds most likely. Failing that, you could also try resetting the camera, in case you have inadvertently changed something...

I once called the police because someone had $20,000 of new computer equipment listed for sale in a local website for $800. The police told me if I thought it was such a bargain, I should buy it. I guess they were busy.

There world is awash with counterfeit memory cards, so that is a possible explanation also. Even buying from brick and mortar shops isn't a 100% guarantee.

Identifying Fake SD Cards and USB Sticks: 7 Steps (with Pictures)

Assuming a genuine card:
if you have erased the card in your computer, it would be a good idea to use sd card formatter then follow that up with a format in the camera.

If buying, i would get non magnetic. You can always make any screwdriver temporarily magnetic by sticking a magnet on it!

I can't see magnetic being a problem with the flash. Wouldn't use on a computer though.

If you intend to do a bit more DIY repairs, pointed tweezers are very useful and I also I have a cool little three pronged thing called a 'pearl catcher tool' that is good at holding tiny screws or rescuing them when they fall inside impossible to reach areas.

My general camera/ computer repair tips:

Take a photo of EVERY step of dissembley. (Nothing that looks obvious when assembled is actually obvious when going back together!)
Use an egg carton to keep track of the order that you removed screws. Also stops them falling off your desk.

Pentax Genuine AF360 FGZ Flash Replacement Spare Repair Parts |

Good news, it's very cheap (when compared with most camera related things...)

I'm in two minds about the plastic shoe. It does mean that it's a weak part, but I think it's better that the plastic shoe breaks than if it were strong enough to snap the top off your camera.

(I've bought parts from US camera before without problems.)

Actually, it's default to .pef, but there is a menu option in the camera that you must have selected to set it to .dng.

Have you tried the pentax software that came with the camera? The advantage of this is I believe Pentax knows their cameras' image qualities better than third parties. You also get to have the same image processing options as in the camera and the software retains all your camera settings by default.

I've done exactly this once while on holiday with my K3 and upgraded my cards. There's an item in the playback mode "Image Copy" showing a little icon of two SD cards and an arrow pointing from one to the next. Very handy.

Domain Name - To Acquire or No?

I just checked the google analytics on my company's website. We get 18% of visitors who "directly enter" our website address - which may actually include things like clicking our address on our email signature. The rest come from search or referrals. So 4/5 of people don't care about our domain name and of the remainder, I doubt many actually type it in.
This is especially true now with mobile phones. No way anyone will bother typing an address. 25% of our visitors are on mobile - so it's worth making your site mobile friendly first. Five years ago, we would get about 1 mobile visitor per month.

K 3 II: How expose for highlights?
Posted By calsan
Replies: 19

Yes, I thought that too, but there are work arounds. It mostly is a problem, obviously, with dark forgrounds and bright skies. Eg, brown rocks and a sunny day. But this is to be expected. The K3 is actually awesome for dynamic range, but you wouldn't know it if you're shooting jpegs in bright mode... If shooting RAW, then you get much more exposure latitude and you will be amazed how much more gets recorded in your images than you would guess from the jpegs.

A few tricks:
There is the highlight correction mode (press info button) that you can turn on, which helps by about 1ev range. It does limits your ISO range to 200 and above, which isn't a problem with the K3's image quality.

The other thing to consider is that you can safely underexpose by much more than 1ev and merrily recover the shadows without any penalty.

I have also found to shoot in 'Natural' image mode(?) is a good starting point for retaining good dynamic range for processing my RAWs (I use Pentax DCU). Some might not like the lack of punch to the images, but the reduced contrast retains more detail, and you can always increase any sharpness or contrast to suit the image.

Assuming you shot RAW, the other thing is to underexpose (as above) and then play with the dodging slider in PDCU's exposure tab. You can recover huge amounts of shadow detail whilst avoiding overexposing using this slider. Don't overdo it though. Can make photos look too HDR, which isn't always desired.

Something else to consider if shooting in bright conditions is to use a circular polariser. Basically, if it's so bright and glare-y that you need sunglasses to see, a polariser will help tame things.

The last thing, is that it seems that different lenses behave differently with regards exposure. I find the 18-135 easy to overexpose and a "bit boring looking" at 18mm, whilst the 15ltd, for example, produces rich colours every time.

I presume you have tried changing the aperture and shutter speed!
Is the film speed setting correct?

I 'think' they were designed for silver oxide batteries - you could try SR44 or Energizer 357 and see how you go.

Travelled with my ipad and would have been better leaving it at home. Wasn't compatible with hotel wifi in Japan - would see networks but not connect.
Copying photos to the device using the apple sd card adapter took forever and it only recognised jpegs.

After a week, I just left it in a family member's place and bought an extra large SD card for backups.
My opinion - either use a phone or a computer. Tablet is just for browsing the internet at home on the couch.

I would go for a K3ii if travel is your main thing. Being able to map your photos is pretty neat. Otherwise, any Pentax is of the last few years is fine. I wouldn't worry about image quality with any of them. I use my K3 with an O-GPS1, but I think it's more convenient to carry a small external flash and have GPS available all the time.
