Another ME Super Issue...

I've got a ME Super that I had Eric overhaul a couple of years ago. It works perfectly in manual mode but when I move the dial to 'AUTO', nothing changes - it acts like it's still in manual mode (I can still change the shutter speed with the buttons). This is the first time that I've tried AUTO mode on this camera - I usually shoot exclusively in manual.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but it should act like it's in Aperture Priority mode - it should vary the shutter speed with the aperture chosen on the lens, correct? (I've mounted a M40/2.8, an M50/1.4 and a M28/2.8 just to see if the issue was lens related - it isn't.)

What leads me to believe this is my ME-F. It acts like I think it should act - in AUTO it varies the shutter speed with the selected aperture.

I've spun all of the dials (exposure comp / ISO / mode), cursed at it and even made a small sacrifice (the usual chicken blood / hair of a newt kind) to a Norse god - all to no avail.

Surely it can't be time for another CLA, can it?

Agreed. Shutter.

After the studio class that I'm currently using it for is over, it'll be on its way to Eric for a proper CLA.

How often does it happen? Every roll? Every tenth? Just curious...

(This 'line-on-the-neg' issue has only happened to me a couple of times in 40 or so rolls.)

Slightly misaligned? I don't understand what you mean.

I'm confused. How would a film advance issue cause a line? Frame overlap sure - but a line?

... and I'm using plastic reels - the kind that snap together for processing either 135 or 120.

Not a recent purchase - my wife bought me this body for Chrismas 2010 from KEH.

I emailed Eric to make sure he handles the 645N. He does although he doesn't stock parts for the 645N and (if needed) they can take up to a month to get from Pentax.

That said, he's done a K1000 SE and a Spotmatic CLA for me before and I've got nothing but praise for his work.

Off to Eric this beast goes!

Thanks for everyone's help on this 'whodunit'.

That may be it.

Anyone know if the shutter travels up/down or left/right (or right/left) on a P645?

(I have an unfinished roll in mine right now or I'd check.)

If the shutter moves from left to right (or vice versa) it would be consistent with the line on the negatives - given the manner in which the film is loaded.

Yes, the correct amount of developer / stop / fix / hypo is used when processing the negatives.

The line is definitely on the negatives, not introduced during scanning:

Nope. It all goes in at the same time. Takes me about five seconds to add and/or remove the developer from the tank.

I'd thought about that, but if I added the developer to the tank incorrectly, wouldn't all of the shots on the roll show the same line?

Hi,
Does anyone have ideas as to what could be causing lines to appear on my P645N negatives? (These were home developed and scanned with an Epson Perfection 3200.) Details relevant to the negative appear above each picture.

Frame #2 1/15 f2.8 Tmax400 Tmax Dev 1:4 A-75mm

(Different roll) Frame #4 1/30 f2.8 Tmax400 HC-110(b) Dev FA-75mm

I'm thinking that this could be back-related... but I don't record which back shoots which roll of film. (I currently have two backs for the camera.)

Nesster,
In the upper right hand corner of your picture there's a mark running vertically that doesn't match the rest of the sky. The reason I point this out is to ask a question: any idea what would cause it? Development issues? Slight light leak? (I've been getting the same issues with some of my 120 negs and it's slowly driving me crazy!)
And, as always, a wonderful picture...

Tuco,

Regarding your Astoria Column image: how in the world did you manage to keep the shadow detail with such a strong backlight? Impressive capture!

Being fairly new at all this film business and very, very new at this long exposure stuff I guess I just got lucky that I chose a film that doesn't need much correction (up to 30").

I'm just impressed that I pressed the shutter release 16 times and got 16 useable negatives. (Hell, I'm impressed when ANYTHING gets recorded on the film!)

I'll have to read up on reciprocity failure and take that into consideration for my next outing. I'm planning on taking the same set of shots (with the same settings) with Ektar 100 in the near future...

I guess there's something in the air. I too recently went out to check how accurate the light meter in the P645 was at night. Turns out that it's very accurate. From 1/6 to 30" - spot on.

(Side note: the coolest part of the P645 is the metadata captured on the negative. Saves me a ton of time - when I shoot 35mm I have to write down all my settings. Using the P645 is like cheating!)

Film was Tmax100. Dev was Tmax Dev 1:4. Both with the 75mm 'A'.

I've been lurking on this 'Post your medium format photos' for quite a while. There is some amazing, amazing work here.

I talked my wife into getting me a 645N so I could try and emulate some of what I've seen on this thread.

This is off of the roll I shot though the camera to test it. I'm excited to see what else I can do with it...

These shots seem a little blurry to me when necked-down to .jpg and uploaded to the web. On-screen they're tack sharp.
