RAW vs JPG – I can’t see a difference.

JPGs are fine most of the time. However when you need the extra processing room that RAW provides, you really really need it. Say you got your money shot, but its not exposed right and the camera didn't do the white balance correctly. RAW is much more likely to produce a usable image after editing than jpeg. Jpeg is fine for small edits, but any time you need to crank on the image to make it right the extra DR and bit depth of RAW can't be beat.

I understand that. It won't lock in AF-S mode. I've been using af-c mode to avoid the problem.

K10D AF not locking

My K10D had developed an issue with its auto focus. It has a very difficult time locking focus even in very good light with a high contrast subject. Its getting close to the focus fine, so If I shoot in continuous AF mode, the focus is "okay" most of the time. Its worst when I use the center AF target. Less issues when left in auto mode. Anyone experience something similar? Is it just something I need to clean in the camera, or is it something I'm going to have to send it in for service on?

What's happening with the Pro-Photographers?

I think the proliferation of cheap DSLRs is going to decimate the bottom end of the market. People with marginal skills as photographers that used equipment to differentiate themselves from uncle bob are going to feel the hurt. Uncle bob will have the same equipment as them, and the people who were hiring the marginal pros are looking for a bargin, not great work. They rarely have the eye to tell the difference between uncle bob and the marginal pros. I think the solution is to almost *raise* prices as a pro and proclaim yourself a "high end" studio. Hopefully your work can back that up, but in the abscene of any artistic vision, alot of folks hiring a photographer assume that more expensive = better.

As for stock photography? Its dead. Things like Flickr make data mining for a photograph you want absurdly easy. People will just steal the images or pay a pittance. Only commissioned images will probably net any real money in the future.

Will Pentax compete against Micro 4/3's?

Nope. I wonder how long until we see a micro aps-c system if this is popular? Though the smaller lenses are a good portion of the reason something like this might work as nice as it would be to reuse my glass. APS-C glass isn't small.

I really dont think that is their intent at all. They are competing with high end PS camera, super zooms, prosumer g9 sort of stuff. This is a bottom up type of camera, not a top down.

I'm just hoping for a high quality interchangable lens camera that I don't need a dedicated bag to carry around. Something like this you could toss the camera and a couple lenses in the bottom of your day pack.

Rules, yes. Laws no. Unless you signed a contract no private rules are legally binding. They can kick you out of course.

Perfectly legal. Though if they are under 18 you better be sure they have tops (at least in the US)

Well taking a photo and publishing it are two very different actions in general.

There are very very limited restriction on where you can take a photo. Its basically places where you have a reasonable expectations of privacy and certain things like military bases and nuclear sites. Other than that its fair game. FWIW you're not obligate to stop taking pictures when they ask, nor obey posted signs (unless your municipality has enacted some local law) What can happen is you'll be asked to leave, possibly banned and subject for arrest for trespass if you don't comply. However as you walk off the premise you're free to take as many pictures as you like. Photography is considered a form of free speech and as such it has alot of protections.

As for publishing- thats a whole legal mess. Though generally as long as its personal, artistic, or editorial use you're okay.

I'm mostly concerned about its sharpness wide open. With a f4 max, Ill be there frequently. I'm really hoping its a longer version of the 16-45.

Pentax Negativity

I wouldn't worry too much about the negativity. Every camera has its issues. If you goto the nikon/canon forums I'd be willing to bet you'd hear whining ad naseum about various aspects of their cameras. Pentax certainly has its strong points and weak points. You can get great images out of the cameras though so don't let forum grumbling deter you from enjoying your purchase.

Both of those makes are pretty good names. Im also pretty sure they both have lifetime warranties. Reformat as suggested, and then call them if it doesnt work. I'm sure you'll have a new card in no time.

a 12.7mp k10d?

Where the 5d will show better than the k10d is low light. Take some indoor flashless photos with both and you'll see less noise with the 5d.

I think he means he converts and does adjustments in the raw conversion process then continues to work in jpg. Still not the best of ways to do things if you go to 8 bit color space to do more adjustments, but still alot better than shooting straight jpg.

Just did one eye as I'm at work. To color the whites I used a low opacity paintbrush in color dodge mode and the iris I used the HSL sliders and had to desaturate the highlight a little bit.

Why don't you post the original as well. You're right it doesn't look quite right, but I think it's probably because of how you're laying in the blue.

I've noticed that on any test I know much about CR makes some pretty weird choices on what to recommend. Cameras, cars, whatever. I'm a little shocked about this though. Typically CR picks the best "value for the dollar" regardless if its something anyone knowledgeable about the subject would bit. Pentax is clearly ahead of the big makers on value for the dollar. I'm curious what was the basis for putting them at the bottom.
