Travel From Utah to Oregon and back in a 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser!

Thanks everyone! It was a great trip and hopefully the first on many more like it. We have had the vehicle for close to two years now and have done a ton of work to it. The idea is to continue to do these type of trips in this vehicle for the next 20+ years!

Thank you sir! Most of them were with the Pentax 10mm - 17mm Fisheye, but some are taken with the fantastic plastic Pentax DA 35mm and others with a Tamron 17mm - 55mm.

The wife and I just got back from an epic (to us) adventure to Oregon and down the coast. The plan was simple, camp in the Columbia River gorge for a few nights, spend a couple of nights in Portland in a hotel, two more nights camping on the coast, then one more night in Reno, NV about half way home. It took us 9 days, 2660 miles (or 4281 kms), and we had a blast with zero issues!! We loaded up Stoffel (1989 HJ61) the day before and headed out on a Friday. The Tepui tent was already installed so the pack up wasn't too bad. The wife and I did have a talk prior to leaving about traveling in a 27 year old vehicle that was never sold here in the US. We agreed that there would be some issue (big or small) and we would deal with it when it happened. Worst comes to worst we ship Stoffel to the nearest competent mechanic, or home and rent a vehicle to finish off the trip. Turns out everything went better than expected and no mechanic was needed!!!

The first three days (and nights) we spent in the Columbia River Gorge. Beautiful, beautiful country!

Setting up camp in the pouring rain

Happy wife in the Tepui tent!

The Columbia River from Vista House

Waterfalls everywhere!!

Boat ride!!

Multhnoma falls

The next couple of night were spent in a hotel in downtown Portland. I was pretty worried about parking because the hotel only had validated parking and Stoffel wouldn't fit. They pointed me to a garage a half a block away and they were the ticket! Not only did Stoffel fit, but the guys were from Micronesia and used to the RHD, win win!! They even moved an Audi to make room for it righ up front. Lol

Parking spot of honor!! Lol

Portland was a great town to visit. Food was great, we felt safe walking around, and there is a ton of culture there. I'm not sure we would want to live there, but awesome to visit! While there we went to the Japanese garden and the Rose garden. Sooooo many flowers!!

After that we were off to the coast! Being from landlocked Utah we really don't see the kind of water and bridges that were in the area. So freaking cool!

---------- Post added 06-20-16 at 08:01 PM ----------

Then we got to the coast. HOLY FREAKING S#&*!!! The coast was so damn scenic it was stupid. We seriously had a 6 hour drive from Portland to our camping spot the next day and it took us about 11 hours. Every time we would come around another corner we would pull over and take more pics! The first night we stayed in a State Park near the coast and the second night was in Redwood National and State Park right on the coast. Awesome, awesome night!

After that it was on to Reno for a night and then home. It was a great trip and the old Land Cruiser did fantastic! We couldn't be happier about the trip and can't wait for the next! Thanks for looking and the rest of the pics can be found here!

Last week the wife and I took a week vacation to Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks. The first five nights we spent camping in Yellowstone and sleeping in the back of Stoffel (my 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ61). I had my concerns about spending that many nights camping, but everything went AWESOME!! The rig was comfortable and ran great, we showered every other day at the Old Faithful Lodge, and the wife was a champ camping that long! In the park we did some sightseeing, some hiking, and a lot of driving around enjoying the scenery. Here are some pics:

Did we see any wildlife? You bet!!

These guys came strolling right through the campground like they owned the place!

I even stalked this guy until he stopped so I could admire his 70 series rig! He and his wife were from Germany visiting. Cool rig!

The next couple of nights we spent in a posh hotel in Teton Village just outside of the national park. After camping for five nights and using public showers it was a nice change of pace. The Tetons are incredible!! It's pretty damn tough to take a bad pic in that park!

An oddly specific sign

What do you know, the sign was right!!

It was a great trip with a few minor issues with the rig that we were able to handle. We had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to do it again! There are a ton more pics found here: https://mrtibbs2004.smugmug.com/Travel/Yellowstone-and-Teton-2015

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the comments! I was actually taking pics of this guy on our back porch,

when I noticed the wife sitting on the floor just inside the sliding glass door and I snapped this pic. The lighting and composition just happened to be right and I think the photo turned out great! In fact, I think this is my favorite picture of her I have taken to date!

For Valentine's Day I bought the wife a mason jar bird feeder. She decided to hang it up just outside our sliding glass door in part to torture her indoor cats. LOL:lol:

So, I took some pics for her through the sliding glass door. They are not as sharp as I would like, but that's what you get when you are taking pics through an extra couple pains of glass.

Landscape Capital Reef Valentine's Day overnighter

For Valentine's day the wife and I decided to take a trip to Capital Reef and try out the new sleep platform. We have been to Capital Reef a bunch of times, but never ventured out to Cathedral Valley. We asked at the visitor center if they thought the campground on top would be full because it was a fee free weekend. The ranger thought that if we could get to it there would be plenty of spots left. On our way out there we passed about three other vehicles. When we got up top to the campground we were all alone! It wasn't until after dark that a second vehicle showed up to camp.

For never visiting Cathedral Valley before the wife and I were pretty damn impressed! The road passes through a bunch of dry washes that could easily make it impossible to get through during a storm in the desert. The first monoliths that we came to were Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon. Before we came to them we venture over to take a look at the Glass Mountain. It's a lot smaller than I thought it would be but pretty interesting.

Then we got to the Temples. Wow, just WOW!!

When we got up to the campground it was almost dark (thanks snow covered road!), so we had to choose a camp spot and get set up pretty fast. We did however get to take a look at the overlook and I had a feeling it was going to be a good next morning. The sleep platform worked great! There was plenty of room for the both of us, we just need a better sleeping mat. The blankets we laid down did not cut it. 4:30am rolled around and I was awake. The sunrise was pretty cool looking through the tinted passenger window of the cruiser. At around 5:30am I rolled out of bed and got the camera set up at the overlook. I was not disappointed! I was snapping pics as the sun rose over the valley and ended up with this.

After the sun was up it was time to drag the wifey out of bed and get going. We packed up the cruiser and got back on the road.

The plan was to go back down and hit some hiking trails in the park, but the wife was not feeling it. The night before she tripped and pulled something in her repaired hip. So, with long hikes out of the question we decided to take our time heading out of Cathedral Valley and do some shorted hikes. There is a lot of open space in that valley!!

So, all in all it was a great overnight trip. We got to try out the sleep platform and visit a side of the park that we haven't been to before. Thanks for the memories Capital Reef!! The rest of the photos can be found here.

The wife and I took a trip to the Red Butte Gardens today with a friend. I have never been there before despite living in Utah my whole life. It was a pretty cool place! We just might have to visit again in the spring when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of flowers left

Sans background color

These little buggers were everywhere!

Did I mention they were everywhere?

This little guy was already gathering stuff for winter. It's not even August yet!!

The girls leaving me for taking too many pics

More flowers

And the final pic, my wife riding a lizard!! Lol

Thanks for looking! All comments and critique welcome!

The wife and I decided to take a quick trip to the Swell this morning. We both needed a get away from work and the house so a trip to the swell sounded like a great idea! It was just what we both needed for a quick get away. The weather was perfect, sun then overcast with a little bit of rain. I can't figure out why we don't go there more often!

Pics were taken here and there. The rest can be found here

Here is my best Ansel Adams impression. I was at work earlier this week and it was pretty foggy. It just so happens that I had my camera at work for the first time in weeks. As I was driving around in the fog I noticed this tree and had to take a quick shot. As always C&C is welcome!

Nice moose pics! When the wife and I were there last year we didn't see any. The rangers told us that they never really moved back in after the fires in the 80's.

BG-4 w/AA batteries saved my trip!

On a recent vacation I was saved by the AA battery tray in the BG-4. As I was switching lenses I noticed that my battery was low. When I switched my battery to the body instead of the grip I was shocked to find that it was also dead!

No big deal I thought, I will finish out the day (day 3 of 9) with one battery and charge them when I get back to the hotel. Then it hit me, I FORGOT THE CHARGER!!!

As I started to panic I remembered that I slipped the AA tray for the grip into my camera bag. I asked the wife to go back into the store and spend whatever amount of money she had to to buy 6 AA batteries. I replaced the dead battery with the AA's and never looked back! The AA batteries lasted the rest of the trip without issue. I was surprised that they lasted as long as they did!

Thanks to the folks at Pentax for making a great product and saving my vacation! I would highly recommend the grip as a NECESSITY to all K-5 owners!:)

The wife and I just got back from a 9 day trip to Yosemite and Sequoia/King's Canyon National Parks. It was a fantastic time! The views at Yosemite are incredible and the trees in Sequoia are inspiring. We did do some light hiking, but mostly stuck to the roads because of my nasty head cold.

Here are a few quick pics, the rest can be found in the gallery here. As always C&C is welcome, I hope you enjoy!

I have a serious question about photo #2; is it too dark? Originally it was darker so I lightened it up a bit, but I'm not sure if it is enough.
