I'm not outraged. It just surprises me that Pentax would release a cam like this, with such a tiny sensor, at this price.
I can't see anyone even remotely serious about photography buying this camera. :ugh:

"I wonder if Pentax (Hoya?) did any market research for this product with actual photographers."
I'm wondering who they're trying to sell this to also.
Novices? Perhaps, since they may not know any better.
Casual snappers? I don't think so since they would hopefully already know about sensor size and such.
Vanity/Fashion shoppers? Maybe. And, that's a big maybe, because the cam doesn't look that good to me.
I don't see why anyone would buy this over something like the Sony NEX-3 (with 16mm F2.8 Lens: $549.99) which is just about the same size with much better image quality!

I think the Q should be nominated for the Golden WTF!?! Award for 2011! Anyone else agree? ;)

Especially since one can get better image quality, at a lower price with the below, which is just about the same size:
Sony NEX-3 with 16mm F2.8 Lens: $549.99

Hi all,
I've just run across the title lens at a really good price and wondering if it will actually be usable on a Pentax K-r.
Any feedback would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I turned it off on my K-r and do NR exclusively in PP now. I use Bibble 5 Pro for PP, and either the Noise Ninja or Wavelet Noise Reduction plugins to do NR.

Photo Review Australia - Pentax K-r Review
Regarding JPG smoothing on the K-r: I turned off all noise reduction on mine and do it exclusively in post-processing now - The mag may have left it at it's defaults. I think it's makes a real difference, as I can more closely examine the noise on a large monitor, as opposed to relying on the K-r LCD alone. Then, I decide exactly how much noise reduction I wish to apply per photo. Also, they may not have tuned the sharpness and fine sharpness settings of the camera they were testing.
If they just used the kit lenses - while pretty good - then they wouldn't have gotten the resolution and sharpness the camera is really capable of.
When I first got my K-r, I wasn't too terribly impressed with the sharpness of the images it was producing either, compared to those from my Fujifilm S200 EXR. Granted, the S200 EXR is 'top of the class', as far as Super Zooms go, and it's been properly tuned to get the most out of it. However, it's not a DSLR, and I was expecting much more than that from the K-r.
A few weeks later I bought a SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.7 prime for the K-r. Wow! Talk about a completely different story! I've never seen images so sharp and clear until now!
So, you see, the lenses used during the test would very much effect the outcome.
Kind regards

benjikan,
Not trying to be an ass. However, as a pro, I'm sure that you know to always carry backup gear to a shoot in case something fails. If you do that, then stuff like focus motor failure is not a big deal, because you already have a backup to cover it.
Yeah, it would be nice if stuff didn't fail. However, anything mechanical is bound to eventually.
Kind regards

You did a pretty good job of it. Better than most nightlife pix I've seen really.
Shooting in nightclubs is extremely difficult, even in the best of circumstances! The lighting constantly changes, or there's no light to speak of in the first place, which can wreck havoc on a auto-focus system.
Also, I think you were fortunate that the club was pretty well lit, or so it seems. A lot of the clubs I snap in are damned near pitch black! However, when it's like that, I use it anyway, as I see no point in trying to force a situation. And, sometimes the raw, grainy feel of the pix, resulting from having to use extremely high ISOs, can work for an artistic standpoint, even if the pix aren't what one would deem technically great. Then again, my style tends to be something like Terry Richardson on acid! ;)

I had a older cousin I used to go to concerts with back in the late 70s. He was 19 and I was 13. Man, the stuff we got into!
It all came to an end when my parents found a bunch of roaches in my pocket after I had spent a weekend with him though! :D

I've spotted 2 Pentax DSLR shooters in my entire 12 years here in New Zealand. One was using a K-x White and the other a K10D.

Eddie,
Yes, she is quite young - mid 20s I'm guessing. I have noticed the 20-somethings frowning at my gear on occasion. However, most of them don't say anything, at least not to my face! :D
I don't really care what gear someone else uses. As long as they're happy with the results why should I concern myself with it?
Kind regards

I run into a lot of Canon/Nikon shooters down here where I live. I never really get any comments from them though. However, I make it a point not to talk to other snappers when I'm out snapping, as I'm not interested in unsolicited advice. And, I really don't enjoy talking about photography that much - I'd rather be doing it, not talking about it. :ugh:
On one rare occasion when I did discuss photography with a Nikon shooter recently, she says to me, "I'm not into brands like Pentax or Fujifilm". I just said, "That's fine. Everyone has different tastes." and left it at that. I think it was supposed to be a diss. However, I just ignored it, having used both brands quite extensively now, and being very pleased with the results.
She then proceeds to tell me that I need to get this and I need to get that - as if she had one upped me. Yada, yada, yada and blah, blah, blah. I just said, "Nah, I don't need that." She then walks off!
Having seen her work prior to the discussion, I'd never be interested in anything she had to say about photography anyway, as it's all pretty bog standard, event type stuff. You know, technically accurate, but lacking in any spirit, excitement and sense of individual expression.
Most people here seem to have never heard of Pentax, and they definitely haven't seen a red DSLR before.
