K-30 Focus Selection Point Question

I have limited experience with this function, but you can over-ride the AF focus point and pick your own as you've indicated on page 102 of the manual.

The focus points are visible through the viewfinder and light up when subject comes in focus on that focus point just like it does when you are using Auto 5 or Auto 11, except you picked which focus point you are using.

You can select the focus point using the 4 indicator buttons surrounding the ok button and they are visible on back lcd screen. I am not certain but I don't think this function is usable in live view mode.

I hope this helps a little.

The only difference I notice is my K30 focus's and my Kr didn't. I can't tell any discernible difference in SR...I'm just happy with the overall performance.

K30 is The Real Deal...

I see alot of threads where people are wondering if they should pull the trigger and buy this camera, and I wanted to add this thread to help answer some of their questions. I say yes, buy, you won't regret it.

I've only had mine a couple of days, but I can compare it to the Kx and Kr, and I feel I can safely say I'm more than impressed with the K30 and how it handles. I know there are others here, much more experienced photographers, that have had it much longer and can sing it's praises much better than I can.

Mine has awesome focus in all modes and lighting. Focus peaking is unreal. In live mode with Focus Peaking you can still zoom to get exact focus....especially helpful in low light with manual lenses.

I still have to learn this camera, but wanted to share my more than positive experience with this camera. Image quality is amazing, and Focus Peaking is killer.

How many K-30 owners do we have?

My K30 came today. I've previously owned a Kx and Kr so I'm not totally new to Pentax, but after a day of shooting with the K30 it looks to be as good as advertised. After Day 1 I'm very happy as I went straight to testing out the issues I experienced with my Kr and it passed with flying colors. I've always loved my Kx and the image quality is definitely improved over that camera (I realize all the reports say that it was, but seeing is believing for me. The Kr was supposed to be better as well, but my focus was never quite right with that camera).

I bought minde with a WR 18-55 kit, I also have the 50-200mm kit lens. Today I shot some pics with Pentax-A 50mm f2, Takumars 55 f 1.8, 105mm f2.8, 135 f2.5 and f3.5, and 200mm f4. I shot indoors under low light, tungsten light, with flash, without flash, in manual mode, auto mode and liveview modes. I shot outdoors under cloudy skies.

My blue K30 has made me very happy today and I look forward to learning how to get the most out of it:)

*Edit....Day 2, I think the K30 is even more amazing. Worked with focus peaking and manual lenses today. This is an amazing camera and I'm thrilled to death. I won't give a day 3 update, lol, I'm just so happy I wanted to come back and share. If you are thinking about buying this camera, you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for this info. This is not something I knew, but it makes sense. Apologies for my frustration. I had high hopes out of my Kr and now I'm virtually camera-less until I make a decision.

I don't really see any significant drawbacks to the K30 which is in my price range, and from what I've researched (sorry, that's what I'm limited to), it looks like it out-performs it's competitors. The focusing problem of my Kr was a big deal to me and the reason I sold, so I don't want to buy another with similar issues especially if they are somewhat known and I just didn't research them.

lol....just due diligence before I make my next purchase, and hopefully putting info out there that helps someone else make a decision that is right for them. Sorry I'm not blindly cheering these lemons on. It just facts I'm after and I want to do my homework. This has helped me decide against the K5.

Now the K30 is looking to be a good choice in this price range....UNLESS it's plagued by the same issues troubling the KR and the K5.

And in keeping in line of the name of the thread, Kr Owners Still Happy? I'm happy I sold it.

Sticky: Using Manual Lenses (M42 Screwmount, M , K) on Pentax DSLRs F--

I came on here to ask about manual focusing with screw mount lenses, but after reading I have another question.

1) I have some Takumar lenses for indoor ice skating/gymnastics. Can I use 'catch in-focus' with these on my Kx? I've read the manual and tried, but am not having any luck. I experience alot of operator error still, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Any other focusing tips would be appreciated as well.

2) I just read the section on metering and found it helpful, thank you. My question is about your comment at the bottom on Av setting. Generally speaking, when would I use this setting over the "M" (manual) setting? How can it help me or when could I use it to my advantage?

I'd love to have a capable zoom, but can't afford the lenses it would take to put out the kind of pictures I want to get (it's really bad lighting). The Taks are doing a really nice job....albeit without the conveniences of auto anything or any zoom (not to mention I'm a noob and barely know how to use them yet, much less get the most out of them). Thanks in advance!

Vivitar 75-205mm f3.5-4.5 Macro Lens Mount?

To use the dremel modification method....I cut off the lock-release pushbutton that is protruding? I assume this is what is preventing the lens from turning into place? (I realize it won't lock on if I do this).

Thanks Adam/Rico....I can seemingly get it to fit on, but it doesn't turn and lock at all. I'll look silly if there is a locking mechanism or something I need to open/close to get it to snap, but o well, that's why I'm here:)

1st time user a Flickr link, I have three pics of the mount posted. vivitar_mount | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I have bought one of these lenses and it doesn't fit my Pentax Kx. I'm having trouble finding what mount this lens is so I can buy an adapter for it. Does anyone know what mount I need for this lens to fit my Kx? In lens review section I saw where someone said I need a 2x teleconverter with Kx mount. Is there another option?

I have the Tokina make from about 1983 if that helps. If it turns out this lens isn't worth finding an adapter for, that's ok too....all input apprecited.

Thanks!

I understand the teleconverter will slow my speed down. Will the crop factor on my manual lenses alter my focal range? Will crop factor effectively turn my 50mm f1.4 into a 75mm f1.4?

If I used the tc on the 50mm, and assuming it worked ok in certain situations, would it turn that lens into a 150mm 2.8 (including crop factor)? Is the tc something I should even consider using or is it just good to have in your back pocket for those times you need a bit more range?

Thanks again for all the responses, greatly appreciated!

...and a question about the m42 adaptors....can I just buy one for each lens, attach it to the lens, leave it on the lens, then quickly mount it to the kx body with little or no notice of it having an adapter on it?
