Question Rant: PF on mobile browser is not fun

@Adam...

This thread reminded me. Is there any way to access the (user) lens review pages from the mobile site? It's the only difference in functionality that I've found between the site versions, but perhaps I'm just missing it. Thanks!

I guarantee that the K-70 will be more reliable than the 13-year-old. ;)

APS-C Macro Lens

I'll second the recommendation for the 50/100 macros. I have the FA versions of both, and they're some of the sharpest lenses that Pentax has ever made. You can find used versions pretty reasonably priced, both here and at Keh. I happened to get a steal in the local classifieds on my 50.

Having said this, technique is really important here, too, and you might try investigating this aspect before throwing more money at the problem. Your depth of field is really short when doing macro photography. Even your grasshopper photo appears to be front-focused a bit. In the macro world, you're often focusing by moving the camera instead of the focusing ring, too, and even slight movements (if handheld) can make or break the photograph. If you're working in situations with enough light, stop down your aperture quite a bit to get some forgivable depth of field. Try a tripod for testing purposes. You might be surprised at the sharpness you can obtain with these changes first.

DSLR as webcam?

@acoufap's response is the key one here... In order to use it as a webcam, the HDMI out needs to be fed into a capture device. (I use the Elgato unit with a camcorder for this purpose.) But Pentax cameras don't send out clean HDMI, so they can't work here.

They'd hit a home run if they released updated fast zooms at the same time. If they could even just remove the SDM stigma (justified or not), they'd be in really good shape. I hope your tea leaves are correct!

Jiminy, folks. I wanted to read the entire thread before posting, but every day I'd load up the page and find more to read. :) From full-frame-vs-APS-C debates to flippy screens to soap cameras to interpreting pixelated bottoms, this is a doozy of a thread! I'll post my predictions in a separate post, but dang, this is exhausting. :)

---------- Post added 10-14-19 at 10:58 PM ----------

Ok... my (mostly unjustified) predictions for K-new:

1. The headline feature will be the ability to shoot in mirrorless or mirrored mode. Ricoh has been arguing for years that mirrorless is a little silly since the mirror can flip up and become "mirrorless" in their existing cameras. I think this camera will finally be the one to do it. In regular DSLR mode, the user will get a standard optical viewfinder. In mirrorless mode, they can use either the LCD screen or an electronic viewfinder (hence the eye sensor). Whether this works through some sort of optical overlay or even just a physical screen that swaps out with the mirror, I have no idea.

I also think that a portion of this functionality was quietly used in a trial-balloon fashion in the K-P. See, for example, a very recent post regarding electronic shutter capability in the K-P. Additional credit to posts 1709 and 1791 for their reference to these ideas.

2. Contrary to the current semi-consensus, I predict that the actual model will have a flippy screen. I think Ricoh is planning to debut a new hinge/connection system and are just being coy with the flat prototype. The infamous "divot"/"curve" at the lower right of the screen is consistent with several past models, with and without flippies, so I don't think that it gives away any info either way. The asymmetry of the screen suggests that something else will be going on, though.

Alrighty. Flame away. :)

Two things...

1. I have to confess that I've never worried about somebody hacking my camera. :)

2. It's probably more worrisome that these types of updates can not be applied by the user. What happens, for example, if a security hole is discovered in a month? Are all K-1 users expected to ship their cameras to Precision?

Here's a question for everyone...

With the dwindling funding for NASA and the rise of private space exploration companies, what country will those private companies fictitiously invent?

The earth really is flat. But the universe has severe barrel distortion.
A more clinically sharp universe will be released sometime in quarter 3 of 2018.
