Gimme nuts!, K-1, Pentax-F 70-210

Squirrels in Fuerteventura have learned to recognize nut-bearing tourists as one of their main food sources. I guess they still qualify as wildlife, kind of?

A ruddy turnstone, unless I'm mistaken. Seen by the beach at Isla de Lobos.

Here are a few examples, all at 500mm between f/9 and f/11. Just imported and converted in Darktable, no processing except the base curve. The images themselves are blurry and/or unfocused, but you can see the vignetting.

I can't speak of the differences between the two versions, but I have the DG version and I find it a good enough lens within its limitations. Mostly, this boils down to "stop down at 500mm (f/9 will do)" and "forget about birds in flight".

The vignetting is extreme on my K-1; I still have to try it without the hood to see if it makes any difference.

Basically, my advice would be if it's cheap enough, give it a try, as long as you have realistic expectations (and it looks like you do).

These elphants were moving quite fast. I managed to shoot this above the crowd before seeing the camera was not set up as I intended, but I could not get another similar shot. I'm quite happy with the result nonetheless.

From the zoo at La Palmyre, France, shot with K-1 and Sigma 170-500. This lens is difficult to use, but it gives good enough results in the right conditions.

K-1 with the FA*24

I do use a FA*24 on my K-1 from time to time. Not that often because the lens is quite bulky (I tend to use a 28 or 35 if I want to travel light, or a Sigma 24-70 when weight is not a concern), but I am very pleased by the results. I actually found this lens unimpressive on my K-5, but much better on the K-1.

Of course this is a specialty lens, 24mm is too short for many uses, but I guess you already know that.

I'm afraid I don't have many samples on line but here is one: pentax k1-5265.small | gallery.glou.org

Thanks. This is a difficult lens to use; in the 400-500mm range it is only somewhat acceptable stopped down to f/9 or so. But when you get the right mojo or whatever it is, the results can be gorgeous.
