Another minor bump, and a polite request. If you are thinking of making an offer from outside the UK, please (a) actually make an offer, and (b) have a reasonably significant post count on PF. Members with 1 or 2 posts making offers on a $1000 item from 4000 miles away make me a bit nervous... sorry about that, but there it is. Oh, and it'd cost £100 to send this insured to the USA, so I really can't believe it makes economic sense for me to send it.

Little bump. Only about 4 months left on the repair warranty now. Make me a (sensible) offer - go on, you know you want to! ---------- Post added 2020-07-12 at 03:52 AM ---------- Another bump after re-instatement of expired listing: where does the time go?! I've struck through the bit about the repair warranty because obviously that no longer applies.
Make me an offer (sensible only, though, please...). Still prefer to ship to UK, insurance can get sooo messy / expensive for international shipping when you're not used to doing it.

As I've had a dead DSTE D-Li90 clone knocking about for a while, I thought I'd open it up. Externally it claims 2800mAh, internally it has two 1400mAh cells in series. So claimed capacity = lie. Or miscalculation, if you want to be generous :p... On the assumption the Newmowa one you tested has the same level of economy with the truth, I'd expect it to have 1200mAh cells in it, and thus be about 2/3 of the Pentax capacity. Which is your observation when you tested it, so it's probably reasonable to expect an exaggerated claim to be about 2x the actual capacity, when the battery is new. The internal protection circuit in the DSTE would appear to be OK, preventing over- and under-charging, dead cells, overheating and protecting against short circuits. (I couldn't test it as it's corroded and the cells are leaky, but it appears to be an implementation of the standard Ricoh circuit plus a thermal sensor. This circuit is shown in the data sheet linked from R5460 Series 2-Cell Li-ion Battery Protection IC) .
I'd count myself lucky to get 3 years' use out of a lithium battery pack, in general. Quite how Pentax achieve 5 or 6 years is a bit of a poser, but may be down to sourcing high-quality cells which are designed for the job in hand, and users typically using only the supplied charger. It'd be interesting to hear from people who've used only the Pentax charger on 3rd-party batteries, and vice versa.
Today I could pick up a pair of DSTE clones (which now appear to show 2100mAh on the label) from a well-known supplier, for £14.49; a single Pentax D-Li90 is £59, so I could get roughly 8 clones for the cost of one OEM. If the clones die after 3 years, not 6, that's still 1/4 the cost to me, with the minor inconvenience of changing batteries a bit more often, and maybe carrying one more spare (if I'm not carrying all of them anyway). And I won't mind nearly as much when they stop working, as long as I still have some that are OK. Please note that I Am Not A Serious Photographer (i.e. my livelihood doesn't depend on it) - YMMV.
Cheers

Good point. According to an external observer you'd appear to be suffering from reciprocity failure...
I think we've gone a tiny bit OT here, but least Dave got his question answered before the wheels came off. And metals are formed in stars, so there is a tenuous connection.

You obviously don't image black holes using VLBI then. Apparently that took about 5000Tb of data, flown around the world on helium-filled drive arrays... and that was for just one image.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing Item for Sale
Pentax K-1 body, boxed (read text!) Asking Price
999.00 GBP Item Location
St Neots (UK) Item Description
Full disclosure up front - I dropped this camera on 2019-09-12 ! It has since been repaired by CPES under insurance and I've taken about 52 images with it, and all appears fine. The repair has a 6-month warranty from about mid-December, and I will happily co-operate with the buyer should there be a need to claim under that. The repairs consisted of replacing the top cover, pentaprism and FPC circuit board and "super impose screen" (presumably the LCD overlay, not the focusing screen itself); they then checked/calibrated the AF, metering, shutter and exposure. The last picture below shows the damage sustained - it's not like that any more! And it didn't go down with the 15-30 on it, luckily.
I'm only selling because I had to buy a used K-1 II hastily due to going on holiday soon after the drop, and as I'll probably take the same caning either way, I'm planning to keep the Mk II. Couldn't get a used K-1 at the time...
Anyway, as you see from (most of) the pix below, it's in fine condition - apart from the very occasional (I hope...) accident I treat my kit as well as I can. I bought it new from SRS in early December 2017, and its shutter count is now just under 7700. It is boxed, and comes with the usual accessories, some of them still bagged as I transferred my used bits to the Mk II. The battery is a DSTE one, though, not a genuine Pentax. (Accessories include proper body cap, hotshoe cover, viewfinder cover and cup, unused strap, charger, two mains leads, battery, manual and software CD). I'd much prefer to sell, but may consider a trade if the item is especially interesting. There's nothing I actually need right now, but you know how GAS is... But an FSLR needn't be that heavy, and it still has the pentaprism and mirror... It'd be interesting to know the weight budget for a DSLR vs an FSLR, to see where the savings could be made. I think I would actually seriously consider a totally retro body for legacy lenses - all mechanical apart from the sensor and metering, something like an MX with a FF sensor in place of the film. No AF, just bring back the split screen and microprisms. No IBIS. No flash. No GPS (I'd miss that, but needs must...). If there's a self-timer, it's mechanical - otherwise you start "needing" to add solenoids... Battery fits where the film went, electronics in the take-up spool area and maybe across the back. Possibly allow for a grip attachment so long as it adds (near) zero size and weight to the basic body; otherwise, just carry a spare battery with you, you do that anyway.
We now return you to your original discussion...:)
Cheers

It looks as if the APS-C readout probably only grabs the middle 2/3 of the sensor lines - this is borne out by the highest frame rate being about 3/2 of the FF frame rate, 6.5fps vs 4.4fps, assuming the top speed is limited by sensor readout rate. If all the data were then saved as a RAW you'd get a rather weird 9:4 aspect ratio, so the outer 1/3 of the resulting data are discarded before saving the RAW (or JPEG). It's undoubtedly possible to do a similar thing for the 1:1 crop, but Pentax clearly chose not to do so for some reason. Maybe they think 6.5fps with a 1:1 aspect ratio is a rather niche market...

Slight caveat that presumably a moving-mount focus would be sub-optimal for those lenses with floating elements. Not sure how many of those exist, and one could focus manually anyway. And it would have to be super-precise for wide angles, and have a long throw for telephotos...
+1 for aperture sensing, it really bugs me when all my vintage images show f/0.
Cheers

Up to a point. If you might leave it a very long time, take the batteries out; if they leak, then the camera will never be the same again... You could leave them in, but swap them every so often - maybe every two months or so?

And the EXIF says it's a 48mm lens (221mm equiv) with 1/6 sec exposure. So the SR won't have got it right, either...

*ist DS, 18-55, 1/6 @ f/13. Somewhere around 31mm according to the EXIF, though it was of course varying.

Anyone know where this might be? The image was left on a Theta V I just bought "refurbished", though given it had three images left on it and an ancient firmware revision, I'm not quite sure what they did to refurbish it. Mystery location by h4yn0nnym0u5e, on Flickr
(Obviously I didn't take the picture, so strictly speaking I've no right to do anything with it; I'll take it down if anyone has a serious objection...)

Interesting. One could read this as "we got the first shipments and they weren't good enough, so we've rejected them. Like we've had to before...".
I was poised to pull the trigger on the Z1, too, although it's pretty hard to justify for my use cases. Given that, and the new uncertainty, I may just grab a refurbished V for now, and see what happens over the next few months...

I'm not. I get the impression that it's interns, not engineers, who've written it. Moreover, ones who have a lot of other stuff to do, no support from UI/UX specialists, and certainly no opportunity to do beta-testing with real users. Bugs do happen, but design flaws like the ones in Image Sync require a significant lack of interest or resource on the part of Ricoh.
