white or black K-x?

I get a lot (a LOT) of comments on my white K-x, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Doesn't get that dirty either. The black is just a bit too boring for me... of course, white is also my favourite colour for anything :D

#2 was at ISO6400 I believe, with NR in Lightroom of ~50% strength. IMO anything under 3200 looks fine with just some colour noise reduction, I love the grain it tends to give. As far as "techniques" for avoiding high-ISO's/grain, there aren't really any. Given that I have to shoot at 1/300 minimum to avoid serious motion blur, and my kit lens is only F/3.5 (and I prefer to keep it to F/4+ if i can help it) there isn't much I can do about it. Worst thing you can do in post is try to raise the exposure, I like to add to the darks (especially with a lot of "almost black" like in #2) to darken the shadows and remove a lot of noise.

If you looked at the results straight out of the camera, they would still be QUITE grainy. LR3 has an amazing, amazing, amazing noise reduction system that has saved my life quite a few times. I actually find 12,800 usable for night shots!

And my favourite:

Everything here was shot with either the kit lens, Mamiya 28/2.8, or M 50/2. I'm looking at getting a Zenitar 16 fisheye soon as I never have enough room and need to get in super close yet get the whole shot. I'd prefer a 15 limited or 12-24, but I'm limited to $200 and under.

Also getting an AF360GZ which should get here soon!

There is simply no way a camera has enough dynamic range to capture both the brightest of the sky and the darkest of the shadows (or any of the shadows). You would either use a ND split filter or get a blown out sky and dark ground.

Definitely looks out of focus or blurry (at 1/125? I dunno). The reflective jackets of the bikers are also very distracting, and you can't see their faces. I wouldn't expect too much out of the contest...

Yup, a decent amount in lightroom. The original had a grainy sky, but the rest of it was almost noise-free! But the sky was a large part of the picture so that had to be fixed :P

And APS-C will be selling for as much as a P&S, and a P&S will be selling for as much as a disposable camera.... it's all relative. FF will drop just as fast as anything else ;)

I think one thing a lot of people are missing is FF is like low-end DSLR's compared to P&S cameras. One has a bigger sensor, way more controls, and is harder to use while the other is cheap, small, and so easy a baby could use it. P&S cameras still exist and sell a LOT, don't they? FF will not "replace" APS-C. EVIL won't "replace" APS-C. They all have their place. APS-C will always be cheaper and generally smaller than FF. It will also have better IQ and viewfinder and all that over an EVIL. There are always advantages and disadvantages.

Wait wait wait - what? APS-C lenses work fine on FF? Am I missing something?

They have never made a FF digital camera. Lens R&D is always pretty easy I would think (lots of old designs) but making their first FF DSLR won't be easy I should think. They have never even made a big DSLR!! It just isn't their style.

I still don't think FF will catch on like you think it will. FF will get cheap, APS-C will get cheaper! FF is not the only thing getting cheaper! FF will also always be more bulky and generally complicated to use. It's only really used by pros and dedicated hobbyists. Since most of the emerging DSLR market is "prosumer" I don't see much demand for FF opposed to APS-C or EVIL.

Even if FF has a decent market share, I think Pentax would rather leave that segment to Canikon (and maybe Sony). It simply is too small to be worried about totally mangling your lens lineup and inflicting big R&D costs. I think the 645D will be the only high-end model Pentax makes (besides the K7). Their large collection of APS-C lenses just doesn't make it seem plausible.

On the other hand, I wouldn't doubt a K7 Super with a sensor similar to the K-x (preferably a bit better ISO, 14MP, and 1080p video or 720p/60+fps) and some other added features. IMO it is quite obvious the K-x has a better sensor, while the K7 is better at everything else. I would think the price point would be equal to the K7 or maybe a bit higher because the K-x sensor would logically be cheaper. It would be cool to see two almost identical models, one aimed at higher MP and one at better ISO.

I know, I find 50mm is way too far on the "tele" end of things. 28 seems just like what my eyes see.

And I found it on Kijiji! Surprisingly the ad had been up for almost a month with no replies

It even came with the manual! Also has the book with all the pentax accessories. I think the guy was the original owner, he may have used it as a student.

No doubt the seals are dunzo. Also need batteries... hell, I'd be happy using it even if the electronics don't work. Just user my digital as a light meter ;)

I think the problem is this rounded black piece "protecting" the aperture lever. It is ~25mm, while on my other lenses it is ~5-10mm.....

Sekors?

I see the problem. A few minutes with a dremel and I should be good!

I know, with the split image circle and "sparkle" circle around it manual focusing is a DREAM!!! Then I go back to the K-x.... which doesn't have a bad viewfinder by DSLR standards, they just all are very meh....

That lens looks like a beast! Quite the tumour going on at the bottom (battery compartment). I don't think I really want the lens that much, I'm no collector and I have my doubts one of the very first autofocus systems ever would be much good ;)

Just bought the following....

Pentax MEF (good condition, needs batteries to see if it works)
Pentax 50/2
Mamiya 28/2.8
Vivitar 70-210/4.5 (doesn't mount on my K-x for some reason)
3x teleconverter with electrical contacts
Minolta 132x flash
A few various filters
Bag for all of it

For a grand total of....

$40!!!

First thoughts on everything:

MEF: The viewfinder is HUGE!!! DSLR's got it all wrong!!! It feels so solid! I think I may be in love. Need batteries and film to use it though.
50/2: Nice and small. Haven't had any real chance to test but should be good.
28/2.8: Love this FOV. A bit of internal dust. Also on the petite side.
70-210: Doesn't mount. Something is preventing it from twisting on. It is really, really slim! Also it doesn't actually extend zooming, the barrel just "moves" over the inner tube so to speak.
3x teleconverter: Well, it's a teleconverter.... good build quality, electrical contacts ( :D ) , good macro focusing.
132x: No batteries to test it with ATM (or method to trigger it - may fry my K-x?)

First pose is rather awkward, and the left side of his face is a bit too dark IMO. I LOVE the second and third (especially the third). The expression just seems to genuine and the grain adds a lot of character to it.

CS5 vs. Lightroom

Lightroom does touchups. AMAZINGLY fast compared to photoshop from a workflow perspective. Fixing WB, noise reduction, dust touchups, etc.

Photoshop does heavy editing. Content-aware fill. Layers. Filters. But it is best at a few images at most.

IMO I would try for both. You do say you are interested in photo restoration so I would lean a bit more towards CS5.

K-x Firmware wishlist

What would I want in a firmware update?

1. ISO control in movie mode
2. AF mode select from center-dpad button
3. More green button options
4. Time lapse!
5. Option for no black frame past 30s
6. Some live-mode tweaks (as mentioned above)
7. Faster in-camera PP (distortion correction, high-ISO NR)
8. 720p 30FPS... should be very doable if you someone cares to calculate the bandwidth numbers.

I guess a WR and AF point firmware update would be nice too!!! :P
