No I did not get it repaired. I saw another post about a Bad PCB repair for $228
For that money, its not worth it

Unfortunately, I didnt do anything except hope it comes back on magically!!!

After using P&Ss I am now thinking if I should start all over with Pentax or switch brands

Hello
I purchased a Pentax kx back in Feb 2010 from B&H
The camera has sparingly been used but today i took it out of the camera bag (KATA 467 also from B&H) and the LCD would not show anything
The shutter and viewfinder seem fine but Live View would not open the shutter (Video mode would)
Tried new batteries and different lens with no success

Any suggestions?

Thanks

How was this resolved?
I have the same issue.

Did it have to go back to the repair shop and if so and if you dont mind what was the approximate cost?

I just ordered a generic version from EBAY - ones marked DC(II) 49 - hoping they are all copied the designs from each other :)

Thanks. I will look for this program. I have had B+W hoods before (though it was the wrong one for the wrong lens:) )

Which aftermarket lens hoods do you prefer for the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f1:1.4

The 3 in 1 foldable rubber hoods?

49mm Rubber Collapsible Lens Hood for Canon Nikon Sony - eBay (item 270639537835 end time Feb-20-11 19:56:12 PST)

or

the tulip shaped versions
Camera Lens Hood 49mm Petal Flower for Nikon Canon Sony - eBay (item 300505583421 end time Feb-13-11 19:54:06 PST)

Would the crop factor on a DSLR affect the choice. Given the effective focal length is 75mm on a DSLR should I be looking at a lens hood suitable for a lens in that range?

Thanks for your suggestions

Help With lens marks

I ended up taking the lens to a local camera store and the gentleman there was more than helpful. The lens was taken apart quite easily, The ring with the Pentax 50mm marking was loose and it came out without trouble. The three screws came off next and the front element was off. the marks were not on the front element but between the next group of glass. That needed some effort to twist off but once off the three pieces of glass were easy to remove. A wipe with a new microfiber cloth cleaned whatever the brown marks were. The guy also used a little bit of some mild soap to clean it and the rest of the glasses were cleaned by simply blowing on to it. Eventually the all the pieces looked clean though after assembling we noticed a slight smudge on inside (only visible in bright light). Anyway that was left to me as a take home task ...

The lens looks clean and I think I am keeping it..

Here are some pictures taken in sunlight after cleaning..

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

No the lens was sold as clean. The buyer is offering to take back though but if the lens is good, i'd rather keep it

Elements separating or oil - both are irreversible right? Without expensive repairs?

BTW i looked at the lens from the back directly at a 100W lamp. I could see the marks from from the rear they appear transparent (although I can make out the boundaries of the marks) They do not appear brown as they do from the front though and are quite faint (I have to look at the 100W bulb from the rear)

Thats why I am very apprehensive about performing any lens surgery. If the marks (which according to someone I showed (not a camera pro) thought was the coating coming off ??) are not detrimental to the image quality I would want to keep the lens and not worry too much.

Unfortunately we don't have sun in the forecast in New Jersey for another day or two, so I am unable to take pictures in bright sunlight :(

Thanks

Thanks for your responses. I am a bit apprehensive about disassembling the lens. Here are some photos taken with it. It seems the marks are not showing up on the pictures to my untrained eye. Any of the experts think otherwise?

Just bought a lens and it came with these strange brownish smear marks. It appears the marks are inside the front element and not the exposed part
The lens is a SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm

Is this something I should be worried about.
Thanks for your help in advance
