MZ5n mirror blocked, service manual?

Hi,

thanks for your reply, I haven't noticed the 2 bottom pillars (near the exposure lock button). I'll take a look at the review section, as well.

I took pictures of every step so far. I'm an electronics engineer and I do have a lot of experience in soldering/desoldering and device assembly/disassembly - yet I think this is one of the most complex designs I have ever seen, from the mechanical standpoint (can't argue with the fact that they squeezed a lot in a very small confined space).

It looks to me that the rest of the process should be fairly the same as with the MZ-50.

MZ5n mirror blocked, service manual?

Hi all.

I started fixing a MZ-5n by the instructions from Bob Bimon's document, but i stopped at detaching the LCD screen, as the MZ-5n LCD and board clearly differs from the MZ-50.

Can anyone help how to do this step on the MZ-5n? (Detach the top flexible?)
Thanks in advance for help.

Time to shop for a wide angle - I am looking for a Sigma 10-20mm, f/4-5.6 (older version). Preferably in Europe, though I am willing to consider offers from elsewhere as well.
Anyone willing to part from one is welcome to send me a PM or reply here:). Before buying, I would like to see some photos of the lens and taken with the lens.

Payment available through paypal. I am in Croatia.

Auto extension tubes not working on K-5??

Fair enough. They appear the same as I have, and mine are black anodized at the mounts.
So, scraping off paint it is.

Still, why does it work normally on older bodies, and why the need for suddenly putting this "feature" into effect? That's what generally puzzles me.

In any case, thank you, everyone, for your replies. :)

Ok, I did a simple test.
I took both the K-5 and K200D, removed the lens, and pulled the DoF preview.

The K200D promptly pulled the lever even if there was no lens attached.
The K-5 wouldn't budge, unless a lens is mounted.

It appears that, the K-5 behaves differently from the older bodies and somehow detects if a lens is attached, most likely through electrical contacts.

I am puzzled why Pentax would change this behavior from earlier K-mount cameras.
Nevertheless, I will try scrubbing off the black paint to see if it helps.

Hmm. My tubes are apparently PK, though they are marked as "APK KENKO AUTO EXTENSION TUBE". They carry only the mechanical aperture coupling and the stop down lever.

The mount area, however, is anodized black. I have no electrical contacts.
Still this does not explain to me how the tubes work OK on the K200D, or the film bodies.

I tried with three separate lenses, the FA35, K24 and a Chinon 50/1.7.

And I repeat again, there are no electrical contacts whatsoever on the tubes, or autofocus contacts, for that matter.

They are purely mechanical.

They work well with K200D, MZ-5n, and Super Program. Not with the K-5.

The camera does not work with any of the individual tubes, or any combination of tubes.

Another thing is:
The inscription on the tube reads: "APK KENKO AUTO EXTENSION TUBE".

However, these tubes are not electrical, they do not conduct aperture information pins, and there are no contacts on the tubes. Purely mechanical.

Second: these tubes operate normally on the K200D, on the mz-5n, and the Super Program. Not on the K-5.

Also, I've tried with an another set of tubes, not made by kenko. Identical behavior.

Just today, I bought a set of kenko auto extension tubes on a sale. The tubes looked fine and in working order, and I have tried them on the K200. Worked like a charm.

When I tried them on the K-5, however, the K-5 simply does not stop down the lens. I do not have an idea why this happens. I tried an another set of tubes - again the same behavior - the k200 stops down the lens with no problem, the K-5 won't budge.

When I mount the lens with the tubes, the aperture is cocked normally into fully open position, but it won't stop down on preview or when a picture is taken. There is no sound, as if it does not try to actuate the stop down lever at all. Furthermore, why would everything work normally on the k200?

I think it is needless to point out the fact that the K-5 functions flawlessly with the lens attached directly to the body.

Yes, but there may be some mechanism to compare individual blocks by checksums and replace only the ones that have changed. Maybe not likely, but definitely possible.

Where to shop for lenses around San Jose, CA

My apologies if this thread is OT, i've searched the forum but haven't found a suitable place to post.

I'll be travelling to San Jose, California at the end of this month.
From what I've seen lens prices are far better than in Croatia, even with taxes included.
I've tried googling around but I've come up mostly with wolf/ritz camera stores, and I haven't seen them holding Pentax gear.

Can anyone recommend a store for buying pentax gear (or sigma/tamron gear for pentax) in San Jose?

Thanks in advance.

K-5: behavior with flash in Av

Bit the bullet and got my K-5 this week. Amazing camera, coming from a k200d it's a whole new world to me.

I noticed one thing I haven't seen on the k200d: with flash mounted and a zoom lens (notably the Sigma 17-70) in Av mode, the camera automatically increases the shutter speed as the lens is zoomed to a greater focal length, and decreases it as the lens is zoomed out.

As if it somehow tries to compensate for camera shake - somewhat odd with flash and SR in place, though.

Yet so far, the camera simply leaves me in awe, and such little details only improve on the general picture :)

Effective focal length of a reversed lens
Posted By Mirek

I am googling this over and over, but so far I haven't been able to find an answer.

Quite often, and always for extreme macro purposes, I am using a reversed lens, either my 50mm or 24mm manual lens. Usually I reverse the lens on the body, before I have usually reversed the lens on another lens, such as the wide kit on 55mm or a telephoto lens.

In any case, the usual problem with macro shooting is the lack of light. Having flashes available, it is not a problem, but if I want to shoot something using natural light, it becomes really challenging.

Having in-body SR definitely helps, and having it available I would prefer it working at its optimum for such situations. However, I need to dial in a simple lens characteristic - its focal length.

Now, it is a 24mm lens, right, but it is reversed - how to find the effective focal of a reversed lens?

Most of the math I've seen tackles getting the diopter and magnification - but not the effective focal. Can it be derived from the data above? How to calculate it?

Impressed here too, and definitely decided to replace the K200D with the K-5.
As soon as I can get my hands on one:D

The information I have from my pentax rep is that the entire ordered stock is already sold out... :D

Did anyone address the fact that, in comparison to the D90, the D7K has the ability to meter with manual focus lenses? That is also a bit bad for pentax, given their dedication to support of legacy lenses - now Nikon has started to offer the same.
And there is a *lot* of AI glass laying about.

Not switching yet, but hoping this baby helps lower the K5 price sooner than expected :D
