K-x and connection to computer

I shot 70 pics in RAW on my K-x and now the SD card is not even recognized in a Win7 laptop. The laptop pings up when the 32GB SD card is inserted but the pings down 1 second later. Looking into storage management shows no SD card. I have a 2nd 2GB SD card formatted in my 2nd K-x and that one is recognized just fine, but alas has only 1 image on it. My linux laptop sees the 32GB as a card and sees multiple images on it but all the RAW images are blank in Rawtherapee and darkroom. Rawtherapee sees the 3 jpg pics on the drive but crashes when I try and load a RAW. Darkroom just sees them as blank or dark gray pics but shows the EXIF data and are about 12Mb in size each. I was able to generate thumbnails somehow but none can be viewed full resolution.

Focusing Screen "Pentax K-x" removal

Don't be afraid to remove that dirty screen and clean or replace it. Mine had a bunch of specs and even a few tiny fibers on it that I could clearly see through the eyepiece. Look up right behind the foam mirror gasket and you'll see a little piece of the metal frame that loops over a latch. Use a bent up jewelers screwdriver tip (or similar hook) to pull that little part of the frame toward the lens ring and it will come off the catch and the frame will swing down about 30 degrees. (If you can grab the screen now with its tab on the right, lift up slightly and pull it out, clean or replace and swing back up). If you need to lower the frame all the way down to the mirror, pull it out a little more and it will clear the body and swing down to the mirror (dont let it scratch the mirror) lift the focus screen out using the little tab on the right side with some tweezers. Blow it off with a blower and soft brush to get all the specs off it (hold it up to to a light and they will be evident). To replace: place the new or cleaned focus screen matte side up centered onto the frame. There is a U shaped brass shim that should still be stuck up in the screen seat. if it has fallen down with the screen, just put it back on top of the screen aligning the front and side edges and carefully swing the frame back up. It may stop back in the 30 degree position, push it straight back into the camera and it will then swing all the way back up. Just push it up gently and it will catch the latch and your done. Huge improvement on how it looks through the eyepiece, no more dirt!
Here are some instructions as well as on the old Katzeye archived website

This website says invert the camera and place the screen onto the pentaprism 'seat' and then lower the spring frame onto the screen and snap closed. That explains the 30 degree frame interference point as it would hold the frame up off the screen (while body is inverted) as you are positioning it. that makes more sense than swinging up the screen in the frame and hoping it seats properly although I didnt have any problem doing it like that. Live and learn!

K-x no flash

I zapped the flash board terminals on the left side of the camera while I was in there chasing something else unrelated. I forgot to discharge the flash capacitor, as I usually used a external flash. Anyway, there was a spark, and now the internal flash will not fire. It wont trip shutter in flash mode as it does not sense the flash is charged? Off flash mode it works fine. Anyone know what component may have been damaged in the arc? Mosfet or trigger component? I can do surface mount soldering, just dont know where the flash trigger is, or what to look for. Flash board or main board?

Pentax k-x won't turn on?

Ira, thanks! Thought my long stored Beige body Kx was a goner, no power with fresh batteries but the Menu+power brought it right back up with fresh 2500mah batteries. It has 1.03 on it but the flash is dead and any flash pics will cause it to hang. I think I shorted it when I had it opened for some reason.

K-x shuts down in AF mode

My K-x will shut down if I put it into AF mode and hit the shutter button. At first it focused all the way IN to macro, then shut down. now it wont even move. I have turned the focus drive by hand in the lens and it is very easy, no binding. I have also manually focused the lens in AF mode and heard the AF gears turning in the camera so that mechanism is no jammed although that has some understandable drag on it. It will power back up if I manually turn it off and on again but will shut down every time. I can also make it shut down if I hit the AF button

Fixing Front and Back Focus on the K-x

Debug doesnt work on my 1.03 K-x. I tried it 4 different ways. Even did a reset but no avail. The memory flashes twice and it goes right into "auto picture" mode or any other dial settings. I used this [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] and I hit 'enter' after it so I was on line 2, then saved it as MODSET.492, but it showed up as MODSET.492 as a text file, does this sound correct? For full disclosure, I have a Tamron 28-200 lens mounted to it but it does same thing with no lens mounted.

Kx metering error

Metering was just full auto/scene mode of action. Sorry, no other tinkering with the camera, just grabbed it, set it to action and snapped away. 95% of the shots were correct or close, just a few were terrible. I shot the same event last year with a Fuji S3 and all 250 were perfectly exposed, in P mode. Maybe a little more control as the shutter was a constant in that mode.

Shot some Kx this weekend and a few of the exact framed shots were much darker. These were shot about 2-3 seconds apart but nothing changed except car number. In looking at the EXIF data, the dark shots were at F22/1:4000 while the correct shots were at F9/1:3200? same shot composition...? Most others came out but in looking at the "proof sheet" collection, they exposures are all over the board.

The 6V lantern battery (915A) that has the screw tops, marketed as an Alkaline 2600ma lantern battery can be adapted to a camera with some micro alligator clips or dummy AA cells using the small wire port at the battery door. Clip it to your belt and run the power to the camera. Not the best setup, but if your mounted on a tripod all day or are shooting stationary objects, this is the way to go.

Does anyone know the max write speed of the Kx ? I remember dealing with an Oly and the card speed craze was moot as the camera could only write at class 2 speed, or something like that.

Zafar, if your Ookla speed test is accurate, you are in rare air indeed. 284Mb down is believable, 404Mb up is almost unbelieveable, and all that with a <2ms ping? That is like LAN speed within a 1/2 duplex GigEthernet network. N speeds over wi-fi are dictated on what type of router you have, a dual stream (2X300) or tri-stream (2X450) operating on the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands simultaneously. N600 and N900 are used to denote max bitrate. 802.11ac is 867Mb in a lab and you must use ac adapters obviously. USB3.0 802.11ac adapters are going to bottleneck at the USB 3.0 interface of 625Mbs
<<<<<<<< 24/7 basic technical support provided for 90 days from purchase date, when purchased from a NETGEAR authorized reseller >>>>>>>
so dont call them on day 91 asking for support, they will ask for $80 to answer a question...one guy says the manual states 6 seconds for a reset, when Netgear states 60 seconds on the phone.

You want to set the ISP modem in "Bridge" mode (other modes may include: Routed Bridge, Dynamic via DHCP and Static IP), that disables all NAT and passes the public IP to the next device (and will disable any wireless off that modem) Careful though, your router is now exposed to the internet and you'll want to disable 'remote management' immediately. Some cable modems are not user configurable at this level. Some older Dlink, Linksys and Netgear consumer routers run Linux as an OS and can be "hacked" by custom firmware, ie turning up the transmit power of the chipset (!)

Agreed, look up wifi analyzer in google play store, its free for android device download and will show you the entire wifi spectrum your exposed to with client usage and signal strength. Everyone seems to use default channel 6, 1 and 11 next favorite. Look at ch2.

Zafar, your on a 90Mb/90Mb with a 2ms ping time and you can't do WHAT? Man, that's a big pipe here in USA, although we are way behind when it comes to bandwidth. Routers are "traffic cops" while switches are just manifolds (no routing, just pooling the bandwidth to all users) and switches can have collisions and all sorts of other side effects like an 802.11b device bring everything down to its level of speed (bump that guy off!) Routers learn client IP's and can route traffic to that MAC instead of showing it to everyone on the network and having the recipient acknowledge its receipt, that wastes time. Almost all routers are better than switches but you must make sure your router is using 100baseT on all its connections. Usually that means all the link lights are a certain color, depends on the router. There is also traffic shaping options and PNP settings that you can alter. USe the DOS command "ipconfig /all" (space between g and /) in the command (cmd) prompt (hit "run" at bottom of task box and then type cmd) and that will show you all your interfaces. Look for the one that says local or LAN and youll see your ip address followed by your subnet mask and your default gateway. Your gateway is your GUI address, type that in your address bar (eg. 192.168.0.1 or you can look up your router and use its gui URL that points to its interface, ie. netgears "www.routerlogin.net"

To add to the power saving tips:
Dont delete unnecessarily, write cycles take more power than read cycles.
Reduce monitor time, You know what you shot, you were
Looking in the viewfinder when the shutter tripped :-)
Dont use live view
Videos take lots of power
Turn down screen brightness if possible. 95% of tablet power demands are the lcd and even reducing brightness increases battery life.

If it has built in Wi-fi, why cable tether it? I would bet it has some sort of user interface that would allow it to be remotely manipulated. The USB interface is much slower that the 54 MB wifi in 99% of the cases unless its USB 3.0 or firewire.

I bought a Goodwill Tamron 28-200 and it was as clean as new. Spotless. I bought a 'mint' M50/1.7 off ebay and there was not even a fingerprint on it. No sign of even a mounting. Take a good look at the Goodwill pics, you can even ask questions, like "shine a light in there, see any spiderwebs?"
