Why do you suppose the best predictor of life expectancy is socioeconomic level? Or why it has been proven time and again that life choices have little to no base in genetics and all to do with upbringing and education?

I have more than one degree that deals in biotechnology with splashes in genetic engineering. There are several medical doctors in the family - my own mother teaches healthcare statistics¹ among other subjects. My girlfriend's entire PhD thesis deals with DNA chemistry. I am literally paid to read articles from leading scientific journals. I'm not the only one who supremely eye-rolled while reading your "survival of the fittest" post.

Also, the 1918 flu appeared at a time where a lot of people were malnourished, in the middle of a war and a bunch of other factors. Really not comparable - the 2009 flu from exactly the same strain still caused a lot of problems, when clearly we all should have been immune ;)

¹:genetics are largely irrelevant for most infectious diseases, they tend to play a role in chronic conditions and degenerative diseases, and even then it's more of a "heightened chances" than a certainty.

A Spanish research group in collaboration with the Karolinska institute (in Sweden) also reported that they used a synthetic ACE-2 receptor to "trick" the virus into binding itself. They tested it in lab-grown "minikidneys" from human stem cells, they will move it into clinical trials ASAP. It's late and I only have a source in Spanish on hand, but the paper is in pre-proof at Cell (one of the world's leading publications, it's top-tier for these things).
There is certainly hope for a cure, although I (or let's be honest, no one) wouldn't be able to say which particular mechanism the "best" one will follow.

In all honesty, it *could* happen, in the case of, say, a hypothetical disease that targeted exclusively patients of blood type AB for example, since that's only a genetic factor. Still, off the top of my head I cannot think of any sickness - be it the plague, the 1918 flu, this one, you name it - that had genetics as a relevant factor.

There is one major exception (malaria), but it comes in the form of two suicidal mutations involving defective blood cells, so if you don't happen to catch malaria congratulations, your body is a giant liability for no benefit whatsoever.

It *can*, but there are so many factors that are more important that there's no point in considering it.

I wasn't aware that "being old" was a genetic characteristic. I wasn't aware that "proper access to healthcare" was a genetic characteristic. I wasn't aware that "different viral loads and general fitness of the immune system because of good lifestyle choices" were genetic characteristics.

"Natural selection" and "Evolution" are top contenders for the most misused terms in science.

Nothing you have talked about involves either or. They are exclusively genetics terms. Nothing to do with pandemic response whatsoever.

I admit that I haven't tried the 5.76 MDot EVFs, but I did try the 3.69 MDot ones and those were unacceptably bad - for me at least. The high refresh rate, high resolution EVFs will inevitably come with extra battery drain however, no? A DSLR will generally always be a better hiking camera, IMO.

Interesting... I was speaking about the German used market, where I've found some K-1s (like my own!) nicely under 1000€ and mostly around 1100-1200€. In comparison, when we were shopping for my girlfriend's replacement camera some months earlier (her 5D1 croaked because apparently I fried it )... a 5D3 was prohibitively expensive at the moment (above 1000€ for decent condition ones), so we settled for a 6D for under 600€.

Gosh, that sounds terrible... I'm afraid I cannot offer any help, but I have read for other (unrelated) situations that one can call the police and ask them to perform a welfare check at the address...

No, I can use a smartphone and an EVF is *terrible* in comparison. Not that I would use a smartphone for anything more than mindless snapshots, either, ergonomics are terrible.

MILCs won't be cheaper. Every Sony/Fuji/Olympus new model has had an equal or higher MSRP than the previous one, for the last 5 years. That's not a prediction, it's wishful thinking.

The market is already flooded with older Canikon flagships, and a Canon 5D3 is about as expensive than a K-1(which is lol since the Pentax stomps it).

They don't even have to do that, we know some people who sing us the praises of Sony cameras without knowing what exposure is... Gearheads love the spec-sheet-oriented, "high-tech" Sony things.

Neither do I. But there are people actively adding to the fire by a host of decisions taken in decades prior who shouldn't get away with it. Once we get through this - together - we have to make sure this situation cannot be repeated, and that must mean bringing accountability to a lot of reckless, callous people who I'm not even going to bother* insulting.

*Okay, it's totally partly because of the rules...

Of course! That's the idea, right? You technically give the DSLR the same performance but put it in the "mirrorless" mode where use is inconvenient and against the main reason you got a DSLR in the first place, while putting less effort in the OVF modules. Nudge nudge get our MILCs wink wink. The cherry on top is that now that you have on-sensor PDAF you have to eat the IQ loss (small as it may be) from covering the sensor. At least Pentax avoids doing that; while I use LV often for many city and landscape photos (the cross-tilt screen is pure genius), I don't use it for focus, I use it for precise composition adjustments, so I don't need more than CDAF (which I don't even use, 99% of the time I use manual focus).

Probably a language issue; in most romance languages you would use a singular pronoun (it's one organization) and we mostly have gendered pronouns only.

I'm gonna paraphrase Farquaad from Shrek and consider him as random CEO of Megacorp#36: "Yes, some of you may die for my benefit, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make". It's always the upper ladder demanding sacrifices for the good of society and crying for the government to rescue their bottom lines, but it's curiously the same people who are never willing to sacrifice anything and do everything in their power to give as little to society as they can get away with.

How did it go, socialize the losses and privatize the profits?

I can guarantee that, at least in Spain, it will take about one Real Madrid - Barcelona football match to make half the country forget this entire ordeal.

I think it will be able to track as well... in LV mode. I suppose they'll pull a Nikon (or a "themselves"? does the D90 track in LV like the M6ii?) with the D780 having the on-sensor PDAF of the Z6.

Most people, I think, who buy cameras want "a" camera that takes decent photos - that's why an overwhelming majority will get some entry level thingy from their closest marketing department store. Lately, that's mostly mirrorless offerings.

I'm also very interested in the K-new, hopefully it will have a lot of juicy improvements.

I don't know, does letting a million people die damage the economy long term more or less?
Humans existed before "the economy", it's all about making choices about how to deal with this. It's also about basing our entire society on an eternal consumption, profit-maximizing engine which, what a surprise, turns out to be a terrible idea when it comes to any and all crises.

Oh, for sure being individualistic is so much worse; I also think that more cooperation is needed, as well as a strong collective agreement on the ground rules for both the pandemic and how to fix the economy after it passes... otherwise there will be a lot of political tension afterwards. I'm not keeping any hopes up there :(

In all honesty, coordinating a global response across completely different places and systems is also near impossible. Privately-run hospitals are about the worst thing for dealing with this situation, too...

That's the thing; Canon won't want to shift attention. It's objectively better for them to convert all the EF mount users to RF - the question is how to go about it without disgruntling people à la FD situation. If I were to be asked for my opinion (and please realized it's being pulled straight out of my backside) I'd say that a 5D MkV would be about as good as the R5, probably the same sensor and live-view behaviour as the MILC, with autofocus taking notes from the 1D series and improved metering sensor for OVF face detection. Read: the 90D-M6ii duality again. Or the Z6-D780 situation with Nikon. All in all, very solid cameras and an enticing proposition for current users, but not strictly better in order to avoid MILC users backtracking to DSRLs.

About Ricoh, I agree that it will come down to what users decide. If we collectively decide to be content with their - so far, excellent IMHO - equipment even if it's not a breakneck race to more and more perfect(er) optical designs and feature creep, they will be fine. If we don't, weeeeeell...

Because Pentax has so far refused to go with the herd mentality of MILC IS THE FUTURE MILC IS THE FUTURE, which hurts people's feelings apparently. The worst part is that mirrorless cameras are not the end-all-be-all. I agree that there are things they bring to the table that are great for many people, but in the end it will be economic reasons only, not technical.

At least SLRs had a very definitive advantage over rangefinders when it comes to telephoto (and even then RFs weren't strictly "worse" cameras).
