Recommended audio editing software for videos

Thanks for the responses. I have worked with audio software to a limited extent from visiting recording studios or from working as a radio operator. I really don't know the default parameters of these devices, but the decibel thresholds are pretty low and there seems to be no top decibel limiters, so you get the pops and rushes of loud noises and constants wind, etc. I[ll try Garageband, I think I have Audacity, or Soundforge on a backup drive

To be more clear, what I'd like to do it pull in the entirety of video file and either lower the volume, or failing that, mute it entirely using one program, rather than have to separate the audio files and resync to the video.

Specific use cases are some videos I've shot on windy days or during helicopter rides, either using a DSLR or my smartphone. The imagery is good enough for memories if nothing else, but the volume of ambient noise makes it unpleasant to hear.

If interested ... Cubase Elements 10.5 also offers the ability to exchange the soundtrack of a video and offers a basic set to edit sound using compressor, limiter, filters, EQ etc. - much cheaper than the pro version. If interested have a look at steinberg.net.

Audio tracks can be very different - out of your camera in stereo or mono or you can create your own music with different instruments and recorded nature sounds. So that‘s a petty wide field. What are your expectations and concrete scenarios / use cases?

To record my music (vocals & guitars) I use the professional software Cubase Pro (steinberg software). It is a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software that supports a video track besides audio and midi tracks and brings a lot of tools to optimize your recording. Availlable for Windows and MacOS. There are also entry level versions. I even could create dolby surround sound and replace the original sound track of a video.

If you‘re using a MacOS system to some degree you also could use GarageBand - without any additional costs. It also supports a movie track and the option to exchange the soundtrack within the movie/video.

Yes it's about reducing / compressing DR so that nearly all tones fit into the histograms range. ND's are not the right tool for such.

In fact there are a lot of possible ways to deal with HDR situations. Which one you choose depends on your own preferences - how do you like to work - using the camera, additional hardware and software tools and how much time and budget you like to spend.

IMO we shouldn't focus too much on special software but look at our photographic visions and the whole photography process from making decisions in the field up to creating our vision using post processing - which of course also could be in camera.

There are a lot Individual decisions to make. The most important thing IMO is that we enjoy our process - however this process will look like. I experiment to get there and know from that, that I enjoy working slow in the field with tripod. Recently invested some money in a 100mm filter system. I now know it's a complete different experience to use GND filters and see the basic results of such captures on the screen in post processing.

Here an example similar yours. Shot directly into the sun. No sensational image and story and there is some round shaped rainbow flair in the lower right corner. But I think it's a good exmaple cause you had similar conditions and I would appreciate if the sea weed in your photographs would be shown with more detail.

My image without application of a GND filter would have been highlight clipped or half of the image would have been very dark and detail nealy not visible. But I used a 100mm Mid GND 0.9 (3 stops). The basic result already shows a lot detail.

K-1 • FF mode • DA*11-18 @ 18 • ISO100 • f/11 • 1/80s • exposure compensation -1/3

In post mostly applied dust spot removal, a litte bit work on vignette, brightness and a bit contast / micro contrast adjustment.

For special situations you often need specialized software. DXO may be a very good software but some functions like GND seem to be missing. So you could think about something additional. Affinity Photo brings a lot of specialized modules like HDR, Focus stacking and Panaorama and digital layers and GND filters are also on board. At the moment you get the whole package for half of the standard price (27.99€). IMO a no brainer if you use a Windows or MacOS system. I already have it in addition to Capture One Pro. It offers a lot to experiment ...

I cannot deliver a list but an experience.

As far as I can see Capture One Pro doesn‘t support local CA adjustment. The tool only supports automatic modes.

I recently had an image with every kind of CA colors you can imagine red, cyan, blue and maybe a bit yellow. It was made using DA55-300PLM plus DA TC1.4x.

You won‘t believe it but I tried to remove it with different software.

The only one that did it satisfactory was Apple Aperture 3 that offers 2 sliders for red-cyan and blue-yellow correction. I guess you know how good manual usage of these from your own experience ...

Other software I tried were Capture One Pro, Apple Photos, Adobe Bridge CS4 ACR, Raw Therapee and Affinity Photo - none of those did as well. Maybe Raw Therapee could do as well but this software needs a lot of know how about how it works and the user interface is (at least for me) difficult for occational users like me. I use it only for PSR images.

Right, open aperture f/9.5 at 420mm - and since the lens isn’t bad at 300 I often use it at f9.5/420. Of course the DFA150-450 delivers significantly better IQ at 450mm - with the downside of crazy weight.

My thoughts ... I like the scenery ... and I would have tried to use a GND filter or maybe a combo of two because strong light is mirrored. A GND 0.9 plus a reversed GND maybe. Didn‘t do it until now but I would experiment with such. On the forum for sure are some experts who are using 100mm filter technique. I‘m still a beginner in this area.

That sums it up well - and we can even combine it with DA TC1.4x and get 420mm in a compact package.

:D I see, no way to change your mind. Let me tell you I also prefer real mechanic focus but the DA55-300PLM‘s by wire doesn‘t work that bad ... and I see it as a minor issue compared to the lenses’ many positive properties. :)

A table of zones. Zone V represents 18% reflective - generated using html table tags, function hsl(0, 0%, 50%).

Of course on a display lightness may be off.

I also use calibre as book manager. Open Source Software for Linux, MacOS and Windows. It also manages other stuff and you can convert between different non-DRM formats.

I also puchased some ebooks from RockyNook. You can download an epub, kindle and pdf version and only pay the price for one. They are without DRM. I read the epub version on my iPad Pro using the App Marvin - of course in color. :-). Within the epub editor Sigil you can have a closer look at how these ebooks are made. ... apart from that I use the kindle app for amazon kindle book puchases.

I think Ricoh would agree to call the DA*11-18 premium lens - it‘s KAF3 mount.

Besides all this technical stuff and explanations I'd like to cry FREEDOM! ... for photographers to choose the tools they love to work and make their photographs with.

That for sure leads to diversity - and diversity is about us. :)

If economics and special interests come into play even better solutions can die - history tells.

Thank you for this nice comment! - I appreciate it. It tells me, it's always worth sharing images on Pentax Forums. Guess this image will be one of my favorites in the coming years - a shot not planned and not composed, it just happened like a reflex. :)

KP • DA TC1.4x + DA55-300PLM @ 420 • around half size image crop • ISO200 • f/9.5 • 1/200s

My wife called that there's a grey goose! Had to react fast cause I didn't see it instantly. So only one shot using back button focus with center focus point. I'm a bit surprised that I got an image I'd like to show. :)
