New KP owner - where to start?

My prefered shooting mode is Av (custom mode 1) - so the thumb wheel changes the aperture. The front whel is set to change exposure compensation, and the top dial changes the iso (set on C2). This works best for me, but depending on the way you shoot, you might find a different setup more suitable.

The best way is to just use you camera and see what you use and what not. After that see if there is a way to switch what you do not use with what you need.

My combo is also a result of an evolution based on my needs, shooting style and subjects. For example people that shoot action, or subjects that require freezing a subject use the TAv mode (i think thats the one) - where you set the needed shutter speed and aperture and the camera adjusts the iso.

My other custom shooting modes basicly use the same button and wheel layout, only the shooting mode being different - one for flash use, one for pixel shit, one bulb, and one for action that i never use.

Hope this helps

What is the difference between ev bar and ev compensation? I alway thought that they are the same, but it is bar when in M mode (you change it by changing something else from the triangle), and compensation in semi and auto modes (by changing it, abother value in the triangle will change based on mode used).

K-New sensor? will it be 43mp?

I will probably buy the next flagship (>1 year after release) and, if it would (i hope not) have the 43 megapixel sensor, it would be a bigger jump than i made about 5 years ago, from a K100D to the K3 (18 megapixels vs. 19 megapixels).

I read an article (sadly its in german) about a photographer specialised in aerial photography, and he said he uses fujifilm gfx camera with longer lenses, between 70 al 200mm. Here is a link to the article:

Hope you find some helpful information.

On the K3 there is an option called Instant Review, located on the camera 4 menu, the first row, on the top. I know every new generation camwra has a slightly changed menu, but it's worth a try.

That is interesting, thanks for the clarification, I find it kind of a weird choice of words. Usualy germans like to be really precise, and they kind of missed the mark here.

I also look at their site pretty often, and took a look just now and i can find nothing of that sort. What i can see though is a refurbished section where the two lenses appear (but not only) - but that has been the case for a while now.

But i did saw something interesting, and that is a traveler lens kit consisting of the da 16-85, da 55-300 plm and da 21 limited (but i do not know if the price is good or not).

edit: i was wrong, they have no 18-135 as a refurbished lens, just a few other.

It seems the Tamron (blue) has one extra seal. Or is the extra seal in the pentax not visible due to perspective?

Another question is what lens are you using? For non A lenses (K and m42), you have to dig in the custom menu and change a setting.

You set the ev bracket values while you are selecting the shooting mode. After pushing the right arrow and selecting auto bracketing, you rotate the two wheels to set the desired values, and only then the ok button. Hope this works.

Have you tried rotating the back wheel? On my KP the back wheel you set the ev value (1/3 stops - might have to be set up in the custom menu, but i am not sure), and front wheel the nr of bracketed shots (posibility: 2, 3 and 5 shots)

I think your statement - the device will draw up to its maximum rating - does not apply to batteries, only if it has integrated circuits , like smartphones do. Only users draw what they need, like motors and such.

All i know is all my cameras work the same for me (k100d, k3 and kp), i have them set tp create a folder for each day of shooting, and it has always been month-day as the folder name. These are folders created by the camera and not by the computer used to access/copy the images

I do not know the date format in Japan, but i think in the u.s. the format is mm-dd, as oposed to Europe where it is dd-mm; so i think the date is actually true... it is the same with my cameras as well, and it bugs me a bit, as a citizen of EU, but it is not that bad. At my workplace we actually use an inverted date ( yyyy-mm-dd ) because that way they are better sorted after file name.

That is sadly not possible, because the mirror needs to be in the up position, and hence blocking the viewfinder.

I was also overwhelmed, and twice that is:

- 1st time when i bought a tamron 10-24 (now long gone);

-2nd time when i tried the sigma 8-16 borowed from a wor coleague.

The wider you go, the weirder it gets, because it is really hard to imagine what fits in the frame, and how it all looks, what you see with your eyes and what the camera sees thru the lens.

The 15 limkted though is a more easy to use lens. The lens is generally used for: compositions with two points of interests, one smaller close and the other further away and bigger; photos with sun in the frame because of the flare resistance; and the smc version is known for the sun stars (or how they are called).

My advice is to use the exagerated perspective in creative ways, and do not be afraid to experiment - you have to try to get to know your lens to use it best.

A good place to start is check out the "The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club" dedicated to this lens:
The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club - PentaxForums.com

there you will see what the lens is capable of and also learn about how best to use this lens.

Hope this is enough to get you started, and most off all, gets you out of the house to just use it, because it is a lot of fun.

I find the 15 limited more than capable of producing really good panoramas - i have a 30x90cm panorama, croped from a 24mp image and the detail is really outstanding - except the extreme edges of the frame, which are decent. On a tripod, with carefull focusing, the results might be even better.

KP debug mode

I have not tried it yet outside, but it really is a strange phenomenon, i se my camera on a tripod, and set it straight (both levels green), but the image in the viewfinder is a bit off. But looking at pictures, afterwards, thy look just fine - it might be that the sensor is not level during live view but sets while shooting. Further investigation is needes.

(i do not really wear smart things, and magnetic jewelry - so interferences are less probable)

Any news on accessing debug mode on the KP?

I know this is an old thread, but i recently discovered that the level on my KP is a bit off, and while it is not such a big deal to deal with in post, but it just bothers me. Wanted to take a look if it may be changeable in the debug menu, and do some testing with the af fine adjustment (all my lenses are on the + side of the scale).

What your favorite coffee brand and coffee machine

I normaly buy my coffee from Hoppenwort & Ploch, not because i like it the most but because i buy lical and fresh (if its roaste more than 2 weeks ago, i dont buy).

I always drink espresso, with 14g in and 30 out. Grinder is a LaPavoni zip (with a few custom mods) and the machine is a LaPavoni Europiccola (also with a couple of mods).

Some of the best coffee i drank at home was from one of the following roasteries: Caphé, black. and karma kaffee. My prefered origin is burundy, and i like african coffees more than other.

Filter system for Sigma 8-16

Last year i went to a photo show, and ended up buying a couple of 180mm filters (just because they were soo cheap), an ND and a CPL filter.

Fast forward to tiday, the day of delivery of the new to me Sigma 8-16. Took the filters out, and while holding both camera and filter with my hands, as close as possible to each other, it seems to me that the filters are actualy large enough for the lens.

I do have to take a better look when there is some light outside (it's dark for a few hours where i live). Next step is to design a filter holder for the lens, and see if i can 3d print it. I wanted to sell the filters, but i might just change my mind.

This might be the only way to use filters on this lens (at 8mm), but it is not a nice combination, because of the huge size of the filters.

I also have a routine for making coffee that involves a LaPavoni lever machine (somewhat pimped up):

1. fill the tank with water and start the machine

2. until the temperature goes up to 70°celsius, make sure the portafilter is clean, measure 14g of fresh coffee and tip it into the grinder (i use an electrical one, but because of costs and not lazyness)

3. release some steam from the boiler (to remove false pressure)

4. (at 70°)grind the coffee beans into the portafilter, distribute the beans unifornly, while making sure no clumps are present and then tamp the grinds firmly

5. at this moment the temperature should be about 75° celsius, now i lift the lever as much as it goes without water coming out, introduce the portafilter, and then lift the lever up slowly as much as it goes

6. wait 5-6 seconds and start pushing the lever to build pressure, 9 bars at first, and the slowly reduce throughout the duration of extraction until about 6 at the end. this should take about 27 to 30 seconds

7. take mental notes on what i did wrong, and set fine tune the grinder for the next one (if needed)

It is about a 20 min operation, but only max 5 minutes of actually doing things. Some call me crazy, but that is only before tasting.

I have a few other obsessions, but this is the most relevant in this case
