Frustrated at Not Getting Better

Whatever you do, don't quit! You will need to log a lot more hours behind the viewfinder. Like normhead said, look for the distractions in the scene and avoid them. Find different angle to shoot the sceen. In one more year you still might not see a big improvement, but check back in 5 years and I am sure you will be amazed.

I have used the DA* 50-135 to shoot high school drama. I was the official photographer so shot dress rehearsals where I could roam wherever I pleased, even on stage, and shot during the performance where I had to be aware of blocking someone's view. This lens was nearly perfect for this type of event. The 70-200 would be good if you can't get to the front of the stage, otherwise it might not be wide enough.

Reasons to use RAW over best quality JPEG

Whenever I shoot JPG I always regret not shooting RAW. Something usually happens and I need to fix what can't be fixed in JPG. I once shot 2 days of school portraits with the wrong lights. If I had used RAW I could have easily adjusted the white balance, but instead I had to re-shoot. The school was not happy and I almost did not get another chance.

I tried an evaluation copy of LR 4 after using PS CS3 and didn't like the limitations of LR. LR is much easier to batch process an entire folder of images but I still like the full control of PS. Bridge, which is part of PS is just as good at organizing images and I know exactly where all my images are.

K10D suddenly fails to turn on

You have already tried everything that I was going to suggest. I did have the same problem with mine some time ago, but I forgot what I did. But don't give up yet. try some seemingly dumb things too, iike remove and remount the lens, turn all the knobs, wheels and buttons. Sense you couldn't actually try your battery in a K-5 because it is a different battery, it still could be the battery.

The Film Shooters Guide to Digital - A Dummies Guide to the K5

I also started with fully manual film. First the MX, then the LX. I now shoot with a K-5 and used it 95% of the time in manual mode. Every time I try to use one of the auto settings I don't like what I see so I go back to manual. Don't worry about waisting the advanced features on the K-5, just shoot the way you know best and are comfortable with.

Reverse Mounting my 50/1.2

I personally have not heard reverse mounting on lens onto the front of another. I only way I know of and have done is use an adapter that screws onto the filter threads on the front of the lens and the other side of the ring adapter is the K-mount to attach to the camera. You will have no auto control of the aperture so when you stop down it will reduce your light as you set your exposure. In other words, manual mode only.

Poll: Which Set of lenses would you rather have....

Definitely set 1. I have no problems with set 2 however. But Set 3 only has 3 lenses and with the 18-135 it is redundant so really only 2 lenses.

Lens hoods can provide protection even though that is not it's primary purpose. I shot a soccer match and I got hit right on the lens with a soccer ball. The hood held up and the ball was not able to make contact with the front element.

I got one of those out of a vending machine too. I was hoping the K-5 would drop out, but I do the real MX so I wasn't really disappointed.

Is this stain? Please help.

Stains generally appear as spots or blotches. On the first image looks like a bar up on the left side of a slightly less contrast. The second image I can't see anything at all. To test for a stain, stop the lens down and use a slow shutter. Move the camera while exposing a blank area like the sky. Any spots will remain stationary will the scene will blur making the dust spot or stain stand out.

I will be ordering the FA 31mm Ltd. within a month from now. Is there any possibility that the silver version will be in stock any time soon? When I checked your on-line store only the black was listed.

If You Had To Pick One Lens You're Coveting Right Now?

I'm not coveting the FA 31 limited, I'm planning on it soon. There is a difference. The FA 300mm f/2.8 w/ 1.7 tele converter (or some similar flavor) would be one to covet. Price and availability will keep it out of my reach for some time.

Best lens for floral arrangements

Thanks for all the input. I do have the Tamron 18-250 which I bought with my K10D because the shop did not have a kit in stock. I have decided not buy anything slower than f/4.0 and preferably f/2.8 or better. IMO fast glass is the way to go even if I end up stopping down. This is my chance to get my first Limited so I will likely go with that and try to pry a wide zoom later.

You can probably get a copy of the kit lens fairly cheap. I have seen several listed in used equipment sections at camera stores. Most decent size camera store should have some available even if they don't sell new Pentax gear.

Best lens for floral arrangements

My wife is into floral arrangements and she has me take 100 shots from every conceivable angle, then post them on her fb page. I have been using my DA* 50-135 because it is the best lens in my bag. But then I told her I couldn't get the angles she desired because the lens was too long, she gave me permission to buy another lens. Whatever I get will need to be capable of tending to her needs as well as my other needs. I wouldn't necessarily need macro, but close focus would be nice. My first choice would be the FA 31mm Limited for reasons other than the flowers. There are also several wide angle zooms that I could make use of. Any thoughts before I let my heart decide on the Limited?

They use the Pentax with its markings taped over, then recommend the 5D mk III in the article. Go figure.

Another thought. You were considering buying used. Maybe even the K-7 might be a good choice. The K-r has more advanced imaging, but the K-7 has the professional features like WR that you thought would be nice.

You have some tough choices to make. As for price, you might want to consider the K-01. It has the same sensor and most of the features of the K-5. The K-r is also a good choice. As for Nikon, I would not recommend the 3100 to anyone. To me it is a toy. The max ISO is way too low and the settings dial is all in pictures. I don't know anyone with the 5100 but it's specs are a little better.
