Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)

Exactly my experience. Still using my old Nikon flashes on my Pentax cameras. They work great. Try doing that with a Sony camera.

How do we store our lenses?

It really depends on the relative humid of the area where you store your lenses. If the humidity is low you are unlikely to have a problem regardless how you store your lenses as that is what fungus needs.

If the RH is above 50-60% you need to start taking precautions of some sort. Even just storing lenses on a open shelf with the front caps off will be better than inside your camera bag.

If its consistently above 70% a humidifier would be ideal. They can be pricy but I was lucky enough to pick one up for $40.

How common is the aperture block failure, really?

True. Which is why I got my K-50 fixed although I already have a K-3 and K-7. Its light weight also makes it a great travel camera and the image quality is superb, even with the kit lens.

And they are just much nicer cameras to work with in every way. I like my K-50 but LOVE my K-3.

Two good reasons NOT to switch to Sony: (1) many of their cameras have proprietary hot shoes (and even cables) which I hate as you can then only use overpriced and under-specced Sony flashes. (2) EVF. Maybe it is just me but no matter how fast they get I always sense a micro-delay.

Their lenses also seem very over-priced compared to similar lenses from other brands.

Fungus on a lens: keep, return, or attempt a repair

Thanks for the advice! Following the instructions I managed to open up and clean the fungus and general dirt from my Pentax-A 50 1.7 lens. It was relatively simple and the lens is like new now. Works perfect and focuses sharply.

On the hand, I got over-confident and took apart a recent Nikon AF 18-55 lens. Bad mistake. That lens has so many micro-sized parts in it including many small wires and cables. Unfortunately, a couple broke and I just could not get the lens back together. Any body care to buy some Nikon parts? ;)

Lens Storage - is this ok?

With no scientific basis but just a guess, I'd say it also applies to weather sealed lenses. They are WR (weather resistant) not 100% waterproof.

Perhaps it may be worse because if moisture does get in it is also harder for it to get out.

Having said that, the two lenses I lost to fungus were non-WR so maybe WR does work to some extent to protect against fungus.

Why is the 28-45mm lens so expensive?

Besides its complexity, the fact that it is catering for a very small (in relative terms) niche market would also explain the high price. Not a large customer base to get back your R&D and production costs, plus make a profit.

If you live in a non-humid (say, on average around 50% or lower), you don't need a dry cabinet. Just on an open shelf in a well light area is fine.

I live in a semi-tropical area so that forced me to learn about how to store lenses as I had lost two lenses to fungus already. The smaller manual ones I can take apart and clean but AF lenses or zoom lenses are too complex for my basic repair skills.

I just bought the Super A/Super Program and love it. It is very compact with just a 50mm or 28mm lens.

You can use it in program (only with A lenses), shutter, aperture or full manual mode so it is very versatile. It also has TTL flash control which is handy.

The real issue is the ambient air humidity, temperature and light levels. Buy a humidity meter (hygrometer) and see what the prevailing humidity is like.

https://www.instrumentchoice.com.au/Applications/Transport/work-health-safet...yABEgIz3vD_BwE

In my area the humidity sits around 70% most of the time, even in winter. That is high (for lenses) so I bought a small dry cabinet to control the humidity to around 40%.

I prefer a cabinet to dry boxes will silica gel as it is just "set and forget" once you plug it in. With dry boxes you have to keep changing the silica.

The cabinet has a glass door and I keep it next to the balcony glass door so the lenses get plenty of light. I store my lenses with the lens caps OFF so light can get into the lens. Before I did this I had lost a couple of lenses to fungus. Here is an article about dry cabinets. There are lots of different sizes and you can probably find one second hand if cost is an issue.

https://www.camera-warehouse.com.au/news/how-to-protect-your-camera-and-lens...ul-dry-cabinet

Lenses should not be stored in their original boxes or camera bags and particularly not in leather. That is just to protect them while in transit or travelling.

They need light and air circulating around them to avoid humidity so, assuming the humidity level is generally below 50%, it is best to keep the on an open shelf with the lens caps removed or if the humidity is higher than 50%, in a dry cabinet.

The problem with wood is that some wood gives off chemicals and also you don't know what the wood has been treated with. I think it is better to use either metal shelves or laminated shelves.

When will mirrorless hit 50%???

Thanks for the validation! I feel the same way about phone cameras but they are even worse in terms of handling.

I have to confess my experience and reaction is based on mirror-less cameras from some years ago so maybe I should have another look at the current models, but nothing beats the instant reaction time of DSLRs.

Indeed.

I have a completely irrational hatred of mirror-less cameras. It's irrational because it is ridiculous to hate a material object but I just cannot stand EVF viewfinders and the micro-delay in shooting that mirror-less cameras still have.

Pentax AF-200FG Flash provide TTL on Super A/Super Program?

Thanks @stevebrot for that. It's been a learning experience for more.

Frankly, I hardly ever use the AF200FG as I thought it would be useful with my K-7 (and now k-3) but will it nominally has a higher guide number in practice it doesn't seem to do anything more than the in-build flash on those bodies. That's why I wanted to know if it could be used with the Super A (with no inbuilt flash).

Do others find the AF200FG useful?

Pentax AF-200FG Flash provide TTL on Super A/Super Program?

Thanks Steve. Very helpful. If that is correct than it should provide TTL on the Super A.

---------- Post added 04-29-18 at 08:41 PM ----------

Thank you everybody, for the very helpful replies. I was going to buy a dedicated Pentax flash (for the Super A) like the Pentax 200T or 280 but as I already have the AF 200FG it would be great if that can also do analog TTL. I love film but with questions like this it is great to have the instant feedback of digital.

I noticed the Super A hots shoe has three contact points while the AF200FG flash has five, so obviously there must be some limitations. Are there any diagrams that set out what each contact point does?

Is the Pentax AF-200FG Flash compatible with the Pentax Super A/Super Program camera?

Will it provide TTL flash?

The flash is P-TTL so in theory not, but some have said the other P-TLL flashes seem to work on the older bodies.

As much as I like film cameras, it is not a very feasible option in Australia. Unlike the UK and the US, both the cost of film and developing is super high. Just doesn't make film a practical ongoing option. It's a shame as I love the Nikon and Pentax film cameras I have.

Good suggestion. What about PK/A mount lenses? Will they work if the camera has the aperture block problem?

I don't understand why Pentax doesn't just make a 18-55 (or similar range) PLM lens. There would be a lot of demand for it.

Even though I already had a 'old' version Pentax 55-300 lens I bought the 55-300 PLM version specifically for the PLM feature. Provides much faster and quieter focusing, and (of course) addresses the aperture block problem if you have it.

I think you are right. Where do you stop once you start?

The impression in the base is actually from a tripod so either the metal is very soft or the previous user very strong! I gave the camera a good CLA myself and everything appears to be working as it should.

Pentax Super A/Super Program camera base plate

Sorry for the double posting but realized my question should probably be placed here rather than in the film SLR section

Does anyone know if the base plate from another Pentax camera model (e.g. the M series) will fit a Pentax Super A/Super Program camera?

I bought one but the base plate is quite dented and I would like to replace it. If other camera bodies can also be used that will make it easier.

The Super A basically uses the same body as the Super ME and the base plate appears almost the same except for the winder contact points.

Thank you

Theo
