Yeah, I had been using the card for 6 months in a previous (less demanding) camera with no issues so I had to go thru PNY for the replacement. I sent them an RMA request on their website. Pretty painless process... they responded to my request within a day and it took about 3 weeks - shipping time for the old card to them till when i got the new one back. They needed a copy of my purchase receipt with the card when I returned it.

If you just got it, you might get faster service from whoever you bought it from, but PNY seems to be a responsible company.

Help!!! Prints too dark!!

I was not having any luck with the screen calibration tools I tried. I thought my monitor was accurate but all my photos would print very dark. The image above is a sample photo that has correct brightness and contrast. I sent to my printer to see what the printed output looked like. Since the output looked excellent, I used that image to "calibrate" my monitor.

I'd try one of the many test print files to see if the problem is still with your monitor (and or how you're processing your photos) or your printer:

k-x, M Lens & Flash ...

I would like to know this as well. Atleast in my experience, using my m42 lenses in Manual mode, the flash always goes off at full power. It takes a bunch of test shots to dial in the flash power... is this normal?

When I have taken my daughter to one of these events, they usually have atleast two people, photographer and reviewer/printer. The photog swaps cards every so often to keep the reviewer busy. The reviewer just picks one out of the multiple the photog takes per child and prints the best one. :)

Set the default review zoom/magnification to 4x so you can quickly check for focus issues without having to spin the thumbwheel so much.

It sounds like the memory card can't keep up. I had this issue when I used a generic class 4 SD card. the 720p mode works best with class 6 or higher.

That's easy, ad revenue. If you write a bad review, people will talk about it, and more importantly, visit the site to read it for themselves. Hits = $$$

Custom Image Feature on KX

I'd suggest setting everything back to defaults (page 280 of the manual):

Resetting the Menu

Settings in the [Rec. Mode] menu, [Playback] menu, [Set-up]
menu, direct keys and playback mode palette can be reset to default
settings.

1 Select [Reset] in the [Set-up 3] menu and press the fourway
controller (RIGHT).
The [Reset] screen appears.
2 Press the four-way controller (UP)
to select [Reset] and press the
OK button.
The settings are reset, and the screen
that was displayed before selecting the
menu appears again.

Resetting the Custom Menu

Reset settings in [Custom Setting] menu to default values.
1 Select [Reset Custom Functions] in the [Custom
Setting 4] menu and press the four-way controller (RIGHT).
The [Reset Custom Functions] screen appears.
2 Press the four-way controller (UP)
to select [Reset] and press the
OK button.
The settings are reset, and the screen
that was displayed before selecting the
menu appears again.

DEAD Pixels

Does the pixel mapping function tell you if it finds any? I took some high ISO shots over the weekend and discovered at least 5 hot pixels on my K-x.

I'll try the pixel mapping function later but was just curious as to what to expect.

Video Capture Tips

The distortion you're seeing from movement is the rolling shutter. Almost all dSLR with a CMOS sensors have this issue. The T1/2i has the problem too. Actually while I was deciding which camera to get, I thought the T1i had a little clearer video but the rolling shutter distortion was much worse.

You can minimize it by holding the camera steady (or tripod) and reduce side to side panning speed.

K-x HDR Shooting

It can be hard to get clear shot without ghosting while on a tripod even with the remote control. The mirror flipping in the K-x is sort of violent and really moves the camera around. I chimped on the first few that i took and saw the ghosting. When I weighted the camera down with one hand while i tripped the shutter it consistently produced the clearest shots. I have a remote shutter and have to say that doesn't help much. You really need to secure the camera quite a bit to keep it from moving.

I don't think there is anything you can do to fix it. You should look into how much it would cost to fix it by contacting Pentax.

K-x HDR Shooting

I don't know the specifics, but I usually bracket the shot on my own in addition to taking the shot with both normal and strong on the K-x. Then if either of the K-x's HDR doesn't turn out, I can play with creating the HDR image using the bracketed shots in PaintShop Pro.

It depends on the scene whether strong looks more natural than normal. Sometimes, one of the options will produce a halo effect around contrasting objects in the scene while the other will not.

Here's one of my first in-camera HDR. This was taken with the strong setting. Wish I would have backed up a little to get more of the tree's shadow in the frame.... but I was using the picnic table as my tripod. ;)

Remote control for Pentax: PocketPC app. (alternate to Pentax remote)

Tried the app on a Toshiba 740 and it didn't work on it either. Doesn't look like this app works very well except on a few select devices. It would've been nice for the time lapse features...

I've given up on it since my folks bought me the Pentax F remote for turning them on to the K-x... they bought the storm trooper white one!

Yep, definitely the sensor failing. The screen and EVF are not capable of displaying all the lines of resolution the sensor is capable of so you will NOT see the issue until you view the image on the computer OR zoom into the picture on the camera after you take it.

I have also read you need to be careful how far the Nikon lens protrudes into the camera body. Some are too deep and the mirror will hit it.

That's what the pictures looked like on my Canon S1 IS when the sensor started to fail. Video was fine probably because it was only 640x480 (didn't need all the lines of resolution). Mine made blues appear green and greens appear magenta. It was a few years out of warranty and Canon still repaired it for free because of some deal with Sony.
