Pentax K-1 Auto ISO 200

Thanks for the thought provoking question. :)

I would say it should be similar to how TAv handles similar dead lock. If the scene is too dark for the TAv settings with ISO pegged, the settings in the viewfinder will blink and the image will be underexposed.

So I went and checked again, and sure enough highlight correction was set to Auto. Turning it off fixed it to use ISO 100 unless it needs to go higher to maintain shutter speed. I did a little research, and it looks like highlight correction is trying to underexpose by lowering the ISO a bit versus the displayed exposure settings. I'd rather just use -2/3 EV exposure compensation with ISO 100.

Pentax K-1 Auto ISO 200

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.

I'm shooting RAW and highlight correction is off. It's not fixing to ISO 200, but fluctuates continuously between ISO 100 and 200 in normal outdoor (bright) shooting. It was highlight correction after all, even though I was shooting RAW.

I actually like auto-ISO, but it could be improved. The perfect mode for me would be if I could set a minimum shutter speed on the front dial (still aperture on the back). Note this isn't TAv, because I want to specify minimum shutter speed, not a fixed shutter speed. I get around this currently but having U1, U2, and U3 set to AV auto-ISO slow, medium, and fast respectively, and then I swap as appropriate.

Back to the topic at hand. It could be that the K-1 sensor has some issues with highlights at ISO 100, and that's why I see it flicker between 100/200 walking outside.

Does anyone know why the K-1 tends to use ISO 200 over 100 when in Av-priority and using auto-ISO? It's not due to auto-ISO speed; it could be measuring a 1/2000 shutter speed and still choose ISO 200 over 100. This was not the case for my K-7, K-5, and K-5iis.

Cheers!

Cool, thanks for the info. Any chance you've done some astro shots with it wide open? I'm curious how stars look in the corners of the K-1.

Nice collection! I notice you have an Auto-Takumar 55/2.2. I looove that lens. The rendering is so nice and it's fun to use. I actually just picked up a Zebra Auto-Tak 55/1.8 to compare it.

Cool, yeah hard to beat the A-series for convenience and value. I actually bought the Voigtlander 180/4 off Gianclaudio, so I'll report back how it does. :)

Ha, yes, those macros do add weight with all that barrel length. The D-FA 100/2.8 Macro is quite compact and light. Thanks for the tip on the 35-105, but I was looking for longer (~200mm range). I'll keep it in mind though for an all-around zoom. ;)

Yes, indeed. Always a compromise. :)

To be fair, I love the Rokinon 135 f2, and do plan to keep using it for dedicated astrophotography shoots. I also was just looking for something longer than 135mm. Something in the 150-300m range. I'll take a look at the Irix, thanks for the suggestion.

Interesting idea, thanks! I might pick one of these up too regardless of what I decide on the other lenses. I've got a Macro-Takumar 50/4 that's amazing. I love the preset lenses.

Haha, ok maybe 'lightly place it' in my camera bag is more appropriate. I'm in discussions to potentially purchase one now, and am looking forward to it.

Thanks for the report Gianclaudio, I appreciate the honest review. Have you used it much at infinity? I've heard there may be some distortion, but I'm not sure if that's just common warping that can be fixed in post, or something more sinister...

As for potentially selling yours, I sent a PM. ;)

Good question. Both of the lenses are considerably thinner, though the A* is a bit longer. Weight-wise, the Voigtlander is almost half the weight, while the A* is about the same (just a touch heavier).

The diameter is the main bulk, especially with the lens hood (quite large on the Rokinon 135 vs built-in on the A*).

I'm looking for a really nice tele prime that is portable enough to keep in my hiking bag, and is usable wide open at infinity. The Pentax-A* 200/4 Macro and Voigtlander 180/4 both seem to fit the bill nicely.

The trade-off in specs seems to be less weight on the Voigtlander and true APO versus the macro capabilities of the A* for bugs/flowers on the trail. The latter might in fact be APO, as it does use an ED lens design, but it's hard to know without tests.

I also do a fair amount of astrophotography, and would probably try to get some sky shots as well. Any experience here? I've used the Rokinon 135/2 to great affect, but I don't always take it on trips due to the bulk.

Any thoughts, or other options I should consider? I tend to prefer manual focus, so a well damped focus ring is a must.

I'm looking to get a 180/4, how are they holding up in the club? I'd like a handheld compact tele prime that I can throw in my bag on hikes. I think it comes down to either the Voigtlander 180, the A* Macro 200/4, or the F* 300/4.5. Any thoughts from my likely biased friends?

Aren't you the guy from Scotland? I remember posting in your "I'm new to the forum" thread many years ago. Now you're a moderator and releasing stunning photos; you've come a long way my Pentaxian friend. :)

Edit, looks like I joined a bit later than you, so maybe my memory is failing.

Edit 2, I was halfway right, ha! https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/29-welcomes-introductions/134697-new-scotland.html

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions! There doesn't seem to be a multi-quote option anymore (at least in mobile mode) so apologies for the joint response.

Glad to hear the F/FA* has a good reputation, I followed up on the one in the marketplace. As for the DA*, it's a good option too, especially for the weather sealing, but I'm a sucker for older glass. I tend to manual focus most of the time, and I like the simplicity of screw drive AF (even if it's loud or slower).

I hear you on Sigmas focus direction being 'wrong', that can drive me nuts too! At least Tokina and Voigtlander have it 'right'. ;)

I do have a Pentax-A 400/5.6 currently, so I'm set out that far. It works well enough, but it's too big for my camera bag, so it usually is always on the camera or not with me at all.

Going the other way, I know this is on the short side, but do any of you use the Pentax-A* 200/4 macro with a TC? That might be a good combo...

Do you guys have any recommendations for a handheld tele prime to pair with my K-1? I'm thinking ~300mm and ~F/4. I've got some bigger 100-300mm lenses, but I'd really like something easier to carry around. I'm currently thinking either a F* 300/4.5, Voigtlander 180/4 or one of the APO Sigmas. I'd primarily be using it for wildlife, landscapes, and astrophotography. Cheers in advance!

Thanks for the comments and critique! I played a bit with lower compositions, but in the end liked the textures in the grass to balance out the textures in the sky. And I liked intentionally breaking the rules and centering my subject in a 'matter-of-fact' sort of way. I think what surrounds the tree provides enough eye intrigue that it holds together.

Thanks, it was cropped down from a 400mm shot to what would have been ~600mm. I like the foreshortening effect at these long telephoto distances.

Hey biz, did you get anywhere with this? For astro work I've been using PS mode and splitting the subs before stacking. I just recently realized I can run in live view to get the ES benefit without the sluggish performance of PS.

Still, it would be nice to use astrotracer with ES, or bracketing for HDR...

If there's a place to sign a petition I'd join in.
