"Ricoh/Pentax has no plans to announce a new camera this fall"

I don’t set much store in this story. Aside from the obvious qualification about the season, the tweet that started this leaves open the possibility that a K-1ii or KP special body could be released this (Northern) autumn – it said no NEW body, after all. It would be a shame if there wasn’t something substantial released to mark the anniversary, though, but a special body would be better than nothing. Platinum or purple seem to be the favoured colours to mark a 100th year – if I had to choose, I wouldn’t suggest purple. ;)

The Citroën H-van is popular around the world as a mobile (sometimes static) coffee and snack buffet. I’m sure you know that the reason for corrugating sheet steel is that it makes light, thin sheet structurally stronger and reduces the resonance (“drumming”) effect from large areas of it.

The Fokker Tri-motor aircraft (built in the US also by Ford) used it for just those reasons. Apologies – I was thinking of the Junkers Ju52, which was constructed in aluminium, not steel.

After years of denying my near and dear’s not-so-subtle hints that my hearing wasn’t what it used to be, I caved in and visited a hearing centre. One month and several thousand dollars later, I can hear the more subtle tonal differences in our hifi system again. I can also switch them off via my phone, when I can’t abide what I’m hearing anymore. ;)

I was one of those people who deliberately chose to accumulate high-quality (ie FA* and FA Limited) lenses from the film era, in anticipation of the appearance of a 35FF Pentax body at some stage, a choice I haven't regretted, even though some of the modern Pentax lenses have exceeded their quality in some cases. I have bought a couple of recent Pentax lenses since, but the only remaining gap in my line-up may be covered by the DFA 150-500.

What an individual requires from a system varies according to need and style of shooting, so you don't have to be brave to invest in the existing lineup, just satisfied that it addresses your needs.

Canon mirrorless with optical viewfinder adapter

The report on which the article was based specifically said that the viewfinder would allow the use of DSLR lenses (presumably Canon’s), and the patent diagram shows no additional optical element in the sensor path, so they obviously think they can confine the converter to the difference between the two mounts’ registration distances.

Given that the new camera is due out in 2021 and that Canon appears to be committed to the body, at least, they must have decided on a sales target by now. Being in the 1-D category, it won’t be cheap and sales won’t be large, so, one way or another, part of the sales price should have an allowance for the market uncertainty. They undoubtedly won’t expect to sell an optical viewfinder with every body, so its price will be accordingly high, with a similar allowance for uncertainty – I can’t see them pricing it as a loss leader, just to pick up some sales to keep DSLR users in the fold.

The RoI for the big four must be looking quite unhealthy at the moment. Conversely, Ricoh’s strategy for their camera division must be looking better every day.

I understand that Sigma reverse-engineered the K-mount to achieve auto-focus, whereas other makers paid a license fee for it. KAF4 should present less of a manufacturing cost issue than earlier versions of the KAF mount, but whether the license fee or the cost of reverse-engineering it is enough to tip the balance one way or the other, I don’t know. I suspect it’s more to do with Sigma’s comparative-value investment strategy than anything else – they probably figure they’ll make more from dedicating their manufacturing capacity to other mounts, than with K-mount variations. The recent statement about concentrating on mirrorless systems is probably overblown or boostering their investment in that line – I doubt they’re giving up on Canon or Nikon DSLR mounts.

A copy of Frank’s “The Americans” should be on every street or documentary photographer’s bookshelf. I don’t consider myself anything of either, but it’s on mine, along with many other such books.

You are correct, but my impression was that the more advanced IBIS in the DSLRs was the result of adding more motion sensors, while the electro-magnets that do the work operate the same way (ie in the one plane, using translation and rotation, but no tilt).

You may not have intended to say otherwise, but I would have thought they’d allocate their design staff on a project basis, which would include technology development as well as individual product design, rather than on a brand basis. The ongoing development of the Theta has probably absorbed some design resource, as well.

That said, the two technologies in the GRIII that can translate into the next Pentax DSLR are the GR’s touchscreen and what may be a refined IBIS. Although IBIS has been in Pentax bodies for some time now, I imagine it still required something of an effort to reduce its weight and to slim it down to fit in the GR body which, in spite of having a much smaller registration distance, still has an LCD screen that adds bulk. The sight of the IBIS mechanism in the GR video, recently, suggested to me it had been developed for the GR, but of course that may have been a misinterpretation on my part.

Probably more in keeping with the philosophy of the original, though, EM – cheap, two doors, based on an existing platform, with a carefree air that many mistake for sporting pretensions. ;)

That’s until Carroll Shelby and a few others saw different possibilities.

True, but it’s quite a different kettle of fish to the 35 macro (I have both). The 35 is sharp to the corners, as you’d expect from a macro lens, while the 31 isn’t (quite deliberately, for pictorial reasons), but the 31 is slightly wider and faster. Really, you need both, but if your budget is limited (no pun intended, quite) I’d advise getting the 35 first, especially if you’re inclined to use its macro capability.

LED light causes vision damage.... What????

I thought the same about 5G mobile transmissions until the other day, too, but some people seem to make an identity out of finding things to oppose, especially where it involves a scientific understanding.

I do, nonetheless, take your point about influencing purchase decisions. The two outcomes are, after all, just the bookends to a spectrum of reactions in between.

I can’t help wondering if this is going to be the latest in a long line of things that people can start a movement against. LED lights emit no UV, which makes them valuable for archives and museum collections, but the basic LED strongly emits a blue frequency. Most are coated to absorb the blue and re-emit a range of other frequencies, although some blue remains.

Blue light is back-scattered in the atmosphere, making the sky appear blue – the same phenomenon occurs in blue eyes. So, maybe Noel Coward was right for another reason: only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun, because it’ll damage your eyes. But, who’d have thought gazing into those baby blues could be making you blind? :)

You can make it fit a Pentax DSLR, but only by widening the gap between the slides that fit into the camera viewfinder. I have one that has been modified (filed down a bit roughly, and not by me) and it works. Be prepared, though, to deal with a left-to-right reversed image. Ultimately, I couldn’t, so I searched around to find a later refconverter, which was much easier to use, though not cheap. Then, of course, along came the K-3 and FLUcard, and then the K-1, so I haven’t used either for a long time.

I'm really surprised this hasn't gone by now. It's in great cosmetic condition, and it's quite rare.
