Does K-1 in crop mode match K5?

Yes, sensor-wise, its about the same as the K-5. You do gain additional features, like better SR, the GPS and astrotracer and many other things.

Pairing flash and camera ???

In all P-TTL modes, the flash adjusts itself. You set what you want on the camera. When you go to take a shot, it shoots a very fast pre-flash and calculates what it needs to do to get the correct exposure, and then shoots the main flash in sync with the camera's exposure. If you have the camera set to underexpose, the flash will use more power to brighten it. If you have the scene metered at 18% gray already, it will use barely any power.

Normal sync speed of the aps-c cameras are usually 1/180th. The flash will not fire if you have the camera set faster. You can change the flash to P-TTL HSS (high speed sync) which will change the flash to a series of small bursts allowing you to shoot above the 1/180 limit.

If the flash is in P-TTL mode, then it will change its settings all on its own. If you are in P-TTL HSS, then you can raise the shutter over 1/180. You can do whatever you want with the camera and the flash will attempt to achieve the correct exposure.

Inconsistant sharpness from my K5iis and 21mm limited

The exif lists "Focus Range Close " too. I think it just didn't focus where you wanted. The focus is right in front of the camera like you were shooting really close up.

Looks like your focus was on the ground right in front of you -- the bottom of the image. The rest is out of the zone of focus.

Here's a group of shots I took during a short hike a couple days ago. They are all 3 shot HDR, combined in lightroom, touched up in Photoshop and toned with Topaz adjust.

Shoot it like any other black specular object. Light it from the side and add a top/side hair light for definition. Preferably on a black or charcoal background so it looks cohesive.

I'm not sure what you are looking for here. What is the "flash" look? It looks like you want photos that are mostly ambient with some bounced fill flash. Is that it?

What crop lens is most like the FA 31 on Full Frame?

Well, the field of view of the 31mm on FF will be the same as using a 20.66mm on APS-C, so you're correct that the 20-40mm and DA 21mm come pretty close. However, the depth of field won't be the same unless you were using a 21mm f/1.2 or something. There aren't really FF - APS-C equivalences without some drawbacks. You can have the equivalent FoV, perspective or DoF, but not all of them typically.

There is a Rokinon 20mm f/1.8 which would give you a lot of what you want, but it is manual focus

Is it my imagination that photo files loose sharpness going from camera to computer?

The camera is showing you a processed jpeg with the setting you have set. The computer is viewing the RAW file which doesn't have any processing applied, including sharpening. You have to do that yourself. So, it won't look as sharp as the processed jpeg on the camera screen.

I'm not sure what some of your comment means. Like, zero density. And then you mention drum scanners. Then back to your actual photo problem without much info. You shot at various f stops and your image is under exposed? is that the issue?

I think he's refering to the dynamic range of the sensors. The higher res sensor in the R has less dynamic range than the IV.
