That’s interesting. All of my reusable cassettes are the old metal Kalt ones with the snap on lid. I didn’t realize the plastic ones had to aligned. Good to know.

I recently purchased the MZ-6 and once I put the 31 on it, I don’t want to take it off. The 300 will work, but I don’t believe you’ll have autofocus. I don’t have the 300, but if it doesn’t have screw drive capability, it won’t.

Poll: Which manual 50 to take for a city trip?

That is a difficult decision. I have 3 of the 4, and two of them are favorites of mine. The reason I chose the M50 1.7 over the K55 1.8 is primarily based on weight. Both have great rendering, and are quick and easy to focus.

Have a great trip and good luck with your decision!

Pentax Q died

While it’s very possible it died, I would second what CarlJF said. Clean the contacts in the camera and the battery. I’ve heard is several different types of build up which can block the already low voltage.
I’ve had to clean the contacts inside my istDL and my K10d, both would exhibit strange behavior which stopped after cleaning.

Good luck, I’d miss my Q at this point.

Sounds to me like when you loaded the MX, the cogs weren’t quite aligned with the holes in the film. If the film isn’t pulled right before you try to close the door, it can act just as you described.

I’ve done it in my ME a time or two...

My scanner came with Silverfast 6. I updated it to 6.6 to fix some of the bugs but it still crashed on a regular basis. For $60 I was able to use my original serial number and upgrade to version 8.

According to the website, I can use it with most scanners. Tonight Iíll try it with my Epson, which is just an all-in-one.

Quite often I see people asking about old, expired film they have laying around. Will it work, how to shoot/process it and etc. There's a lot of knowledge here on the forums, and this is a good place to put some of it together.

I know I'm not the only one with an ice-box full of expired film. I have a 50 count box of P3200 with about 30 rolls left dated 1991. Part of a 100' roll of Agfa APX 100 from the mid-90s and part of a roll of TriX-Pan, which I got in the mid 90s and the can was already rusted, so I have no idea how old it is. And that's just the start. For the right price, I'll add more in a heartbeat.

These first two shots are from the TriX Pan, shot last week and developed D76 for 10 minutes:

This is from the P3200. 15 years ago I could shoot it at 3200 and get a usable image, a few weeks ago I got nothing at 3200. I shot this at ISO 400 and developed D76 for 10 1/2 minutes.

For that price I may have to try one. I already have the newest version of Silverfast and VueScan. Sounds interesting... and time saving.

Plustek Help

So I downloaded the free trial version of VueScan to give it a try. It took a little bit of time to get it to work, but that was due to the age of the Plustek and the driver issues. Because I already have the Silverfast license, I upgraded from 6.6 to the new version 8.

I found the VueScan to be very easy to use (much easier than Silverfast), but I believe I have more options with Silverfast. This may be due to my already knowing the software, but I'll experiment more later. Right now I did find that the new version of Silverfast took care of all the crash problems I was having.

Thanks for the link Brooke, the nice thing about VueScan is I can use one scan software for several different scanners. This I can see being useful in the very near future.

They say version 8 Of Silverfast is suppose to fix that. But I havenít checked into what the cost of upgrading is. It may be worth it since the new version of the scanner is near $500 for the SE version.

Does VueScan work with the Plustek? Plustek shipped with Silverfast. If it would Iíd consider trying it. It canít glitch any more than what I have now.

For an all around great lens, this is my favorite. I also have a couple of copies, and the A version. I have no problem opening this one up to 1.7 and shooting all day long.

I also have a couple of the fotodiox. I paid $9.95 on Amazon for the last one I bought (last month because I misplaced one). I also have a Pentax one and can see no difference in usage when mounted.

You're absolutely right, there was no reason for me to "suffer" with my Canon FD equipment. I had two bodies and 6 lenses, 2 zooms and 4 primes. Everything I needed. In the early days of autofocus, I found I had more keepers with my manual focus than most of the people who relied on their autofocus. I played with several systems, and while I liked them, I found the plastic bodies felt cheap compared to my metal.

Of course, then I needed to upgrade my equipment due to the advancements of digital and, I had a photography business. Lo and behold, my Canon gear was useless.

I don't have many issues with the Pentax autofocus, but that's probably because I've shot many things for many years utilizing manual focus.

Plustek Help

It ended up being a combination of things, but primarily the driver, as TonyW stated. Microsoft wouldn't recognize the Plustek driver and would use it's own. The software, Silverlight wouldn't recognize the driver and would give me an error that there wasn't a film scanner connected.

After extensive searching on both Silverlight and Plustek web sites, I was able to piece this together from the archives. The drivers for the Plustek are quirky with a Windows 10 64bit system. To make matters worse, Silverlight 6.5 (which ships with the Plustek) and the upgrade, 6.6, can be unstable with Windows 10.

The remedy was to uninstall the drivers and software (thank you photolady for the link). Re-installing them cannot be done from the set-up.exe file. I had to save the drivers as a folder, open it and find the install.exe inside one of the sub-folders. I was then able to install the Silverlight upgrade 6.6 and it recognized the scanner. According to Silverlight, they have a new version of the software, 8.0, that is more stable and has more features. I will probably purchase this upgrade in the near future as I spend a considerable amount of time scanning film.

This is a recent shot I took on some Agfa APX 100. I purchased a 100' roll in the mid 1990s. It has always been refrigerated, except every few months when I spool a couple of rolls. The grain is much more noticeable now than it was then... but that's not surprising. It was my favorite 35mm film for many years.

Camera Repair - PentaxForums.com

Here's the link to the discussion I started on the repair I had done to my LX and MG.

Unfortunately he's been in business since 1977, and while he still does camera repair, he says he's taking it easy and doesn't want to be overloaded. I take that as he's already in semi-retirement. He does CLA for the local camera shop on all used cameras that come in that they are going to re-sell already.

I do see it getting harder to find someone to repair our old cameras. I'm glad to see this started and maybe we can create a good database.

Camera Repair

John called me on Wednesday to tell me my cameras were ready, with good news and bad news.

Today I returned to town and picked them up. The good: My LX works like new. Cost was $80 for a full CLA.
My MG was a different story. John cleaned it up inside, but told me it wasn't worth repairing. The mirror box mechanism was in such bad shape it would cost me at least $150 for the repair. Since he cleaned it inside, it is working like it should, but it will be only a matter of time before it stops completely. He didn't charge me anything for it.

He'll be seeing my ME and at least one of my Spottys soon.

Yes... I'm one of those people. All of my FD lenses became obsolete with the new bodies. It was then that I started looking at other systems, bought into Nikon and Pentax at the same time. When the K10d came out, it had everything I was looking for in a digital body. Including complete backward compatibility with some amazing old lenses.

Help!

I cannot seem to make my Plustek 7500i work.

Here's what's happening. I have all the original CDs. When I install Silverfast and the film scanner, they will not find each other. Trying to run Silverfast and it tells me there is no film scanner installed. When I look to my hardware, it shows a film scanner, but does not give the name of my scanner.

I am running Windows 10 pro 64bit.

I know this is an older scanner, I bought it new, I believe in 2007 or 2008. I went to both companies web sites and downloaded the latest updated software/drivers, but to no avail.

Does anyone have experience with this? I'm at a loss right now.
