Jumping head first into film

Shoot a roll of that superia 400 just for practice and to see if your camera works. Dev the first roll, when it comes back and you know the camera works keep shooting that film for a little while as you hone in your skills.

When you think you are ready then you can look up reviews on several different kinds of film to find the character you are looking for. Try a few different types yourself. I went through several different types of B&W before I figured out that Plus-X and Tri-X are my favorites. I also tried several different kinds of color film before I settled on Portra.

Don't be afraid to experiment.

I do need to dive into the settings a bit more and see what I can do. So far I'm surprised how hard I can push the RAW files, I can get very good detail in the shadows and even crop an image pretty heavily. The noise is there but not as bad as I expected, my old K200D was much much worse.

I don't mind the colors, if anything I have to make the images a bit warmer in post but not too bad. The pentax cameras I had tended to lean a bit green so its something I'm used to. I think maybe the JPEGs are soft on my LX100 because its trying to cover up the noise. I'd rather have some noise and a sharp photo than a soft one.

A few from today's sunset over the ICW.

Yeah, I wish they would fix the JPEG engine, but I don't think that is ever going to happen. The edited raw images look very good though.

Here are a few from our recent beach trip:

Fuji X-Trans Colors

I'm trying to figure out a way to speed boost the K-mount lenses I have, it seems there isn't a K-mount to X-mount speed booster/focal reducer available so I would have to get an EOS to X-mount speed booster and use a PK to EOS adapter in addition to that. I'm kind of worried about stacking adapters like that. In the mean time I'll probably just get a regular PK to X adapter,

Fuji X-Trans Colors

I edit mine in adobe camera raw just as easy as I used to edit my K3 images...so I'd say the "raws are hard to edit" argument is out the window. My K3 very rarely had moire, but it was more often than I've had with the Fuji XE-1 (which has been zero times, even taking pictures of my fiance with the same dress that gave my k3 issues) but pentax with the AA-simulator takes care of that I guess. I wouldn't say the X-trans is a bad sensor, but I wouldn't say its wildly better than the bayer sensors either. Just different. I personally like the ergonomics of the fuji cameras because it reminds me of the older film cameras that I shoot, and so far I can see that the lens quality is awesome.

Which AF Pentax?

I've had the ZX-7 (MZ-7), ZX-L (MZ-L, MZ-6), and MZ-S.
The MZ-S with a grip is really something special...especially with the FA Limiteds. It is expensive though and can't control aperture on DA lenses.

The ZX-L (MZ-L) is a great alternative. I had two and kept the FA77 on one and FA31 on the other. It can be had for under $100 and can control aperture on DA lenses and has options to use either 3 af points or just the center one which i thought was nice.

ZX-7 (MZ-7) is a little more consumer oriented. Its like the ZX-L but doesn't have the same control of the AF (uses all 3, no center point option). It can control the aperture on DA lenses. It is cheaper than both above, I got mine for under $40.

The grip FG is a must for the ZX-L or ZX-7, AA batteries are much cheaper. It doesn't add much size or weight. both cameras are very light. I never had an issue with the plastic mirror gear.

I actually was able to find my 35/2 used on ebay...complete with box and all paperwork accessories for about $50 less than new. I got kinda lucky as any of the F2 lenses are kind of hard to come by used, but I wanted the silver version which is ever harder to find.

There has always been different levels of cameras for different levels of people. From total noob, to hobbyist, to pros. Pentax has done this, as has canikon....why would sony be any different?

The size difference is nice, the 35/2 isn't a pancake or anything like that but its smaller than the sig art 35 and gripped K3 I was carrying lol. I know the sig art 35 can be sharp, but unfortunately mine had AF calibration issues...so the 35/2 seems to look sharper to me even though that's probably just down to the fact I can get accurate focus with it. I really wanted the 35/1.4 but found the 35/2 for cheaper and decided that the size and AF speed advantage was more important to me than the extra stop of light. F2 can still get shallow DOF pretty easily if you plan your shot out right. I'm looking into the 50/2 next, followed by the 18/2 and 27/2.8 in the near future.

That's your opinion.
There are many who like EVF's. With an EVF I can have much more info in my viewfinder. With an EVF I can zoom in to make sure my focus is accurate. With an EVF I can have focus peaking in the viewfinder. With an EVF I can actually see image previews without trying to chimp at a washed out LCD screen.

I think this falls more into "I've always used an OVF, even if the EVF has its advantages I'm going to continue to use an OVF because change is scary"

^ on point.

The new fuji f2 primes aren't very big, put them on a XE body and you have a fairly small and light travel kit.
I love my XE-1 and 35/2. From what I've read the 23/2 and 50/2 render about the same and I'm hoping to add those to my kit before I get a XT10.

To me 16mp is more than enough.

Having long term experience with pentax (K100d, K200d, K7, K5, and K3), Sony (NEX 5t, A6000, and A7), and now Fuji (XE-1) I think the fuji lens quality is up there with Sony's Zeiss lenses and even though the DA limiteds are great, I think fuji might have them beat....but that all comes down to taste and how you like your lenses to render images.

Probably not much size wise with an adapter, unless you are using some of the smaller DA limiteds like the DA40...but then you lose autofocus and even with adapters that allow aperture control you don't know exactly what aperture you are on. You'd be better off using older film lenses with aperture rings.

All mirrorless cameras have less battery life than DSLRs due to the sensor always being on for live view. Plus they tend to have smaller batteries.
I seem to be just fine with one or two batteries for a day trip in my XE-1

A color edit of one of the photos from my last post on this thread (about 3 pages back). Shot with the LX100.
I do have to say it again, RAW files from this camera are pretty damn good....idk what panasonic did with the JPEG engine but the JPEGs are all very soft, even when turning up the sharpness in the camera.

Even though I'm not impressed by the JPEG output, I am overall impressed with what this sensor can do. Its almost there with some of the aps-c sensors. It will serve its purpose as the family camera.

First outting with my XE-1 and fujinon 35/2
I have to say I'm really impressed with this lens! The rendering reminds me of some qualities of the pentax limiteds mixed with zeiss sharpness.

I think I may be looking into the 50/2 in the future if the rendering characteristics are the same.

I was looking at the X100S and X100T and came to the same conclusion. Ended up with a used X-E1 for $195 and a used 35/2 for $339...which was about the same price as a used X100S at the time and cheaper than the X100T. I can always get a 23/2 if I want the same FL as the X100 and throw in the 50/2 later for portraits.

Maybe a used X-E1 with a kit lens, but not with any of the better prime lenses no.

Some from the park, RAW edited in photoshop CC using Nik Silver Efex Pro 4 for that old film look.
The JPEG output from the LX100 is pretty bad, it works if you are just going to edit the pictures on the phone and upload to instagram but otherwise the images are just too soft. It must be a firmware issue as the RAW files are very sharp.
Still love the camera though, great control layout and having the m4/3 sensor in such a small package is nice.

So maybe a fast 35 as well.

a new "holy trinity" (35,50,85) of professional level primes.
I wonder if we will see a revamped version of the FA limited primes as well.

Will be joining you guys soon. Bought a X-E1 from the for sale section here and a XF 35/2 (both in silver)....just to get started. If I like Fuji I hope to get the 23/2 and either the 56/1.2 or 90/2 and upgrade the body to a XT10.

Anybody have any experience with the EOS to FX lens turbo with a PK to EOS adapter? I want to try it out with my pentax M glass....Its too bad they don't make a native PK to FX lens turbo, they make a MD to FX one...

The mac doesn't have a SD card slot built in already? If not you should still be able to hook the camera up to the computer and access it like a storage drive to get to your photos. As far as software to post process, there is much better out there than what is included with the camera, many of which is free.

The MX-1 is still a very solid camera.
