Confession game: how many lenses do you have? Why do you keep them? Which was let go?

Photography is not a source of income for me. I’m a financial engineer, I craft financial arrangements: bonds, pseudo-capital arrangements— a non-repetitive, mentally-taxing, but definitely boring job, even if I like it.

I need to do something beyond premiums and discount rates after work, and photography (or probably more like collecting lenses) becomes a hobby for me, it keeps my mind off from the 8 to 6 routine, and refreshes me. Even when I’m just staring at these beautiful pieces of glasses, or just mounting and shooting mostly uninteresting objects/subjects, funny, but they give me some peace, never mind if I have very limited time when I can actually use them extensively. But the fact that simply owning them can give ME some peace and happiness is a sound reason enough, IMO, to justify my “LBA”.

PS: [I also play, err, collect chess books and chess boards]

PS #2: I’m not really fond of superzooms. :P

GR relaunch in April?

The GR’s raison d’eitre are in no particular order,
1. That amazingly sharp sweet lens,
2. Infinitely Customizable controls
3. Wonderful JPEG engine
4. Deceptively perfect ergonomics

All in a pocketable size.

It’s almost hard to improve on such a product, it’s too easy to love. (Even specks of dust do. )

aps-c portrait primes: 43 Limited or DA*55?

The 55 is much easier to work with, much more consistent esp. with bokeh. The 43 is tricky.

But my most favorite shots (maybe technically not perfect) have been taken by the 43. Coincidence?

Offtopic: My DA55’s SDM failed, but I’m giving it a second chance (it’s that good) so I’m having it repaired. The 43’s screw driven AF on the other hand, might just outlive me.

Your LBA is PERFECTLY NORMAL. Compared to most people here (I'm still in denial), you actually have too few lenses to select from.

If possible, you will also need a good tripod, or at the very least a monopod to improve your keeper rate.

I used a thin parchment paper to map out our oven temperature, aside from putting six (yes, six!) thermometer in there just to find the hot spots.

Drinking coffee is such a therapeutic "activity". I can easily lose two hours, making myself a brew.

My experiment lately is doing a perfect cocktail of coffee and Stolichnaya. I'm more or less, happy I've figured the correct mix with Bailey's for my taste.

I've a funny feeling that this thread will go down this route, in this order:

1) A funny repartees ridiculing the comparison
2) A mention of Sony
3) Thread will be moved to "non-Pentax Section" because of the word "Sony"
4) Even funnier exchanges
5) Thread will be moved to Lounge Area because it has become grossly non-photo related
6) Another volley of attacks vs. Pentax' video
7) Mods swoop down for a stern warning
8) Participants ignore
9) Mods lock the thread

Of course, #9 can come in anytime. :D

Panasonic LX100 much better than Pentax Q

No, I do edit my pictures, lift some shadows, crop here and there, reduce some highlights, and I sometimes even do cloning. And no, I rarely shoot JPEG, even when I'm using the Q. I'm an irrational die-hard RAW shooter.

And I'd like to think that I'm not just doing documentary as you'd make me want to believe, I still imagine I'm creating some "art", it's subjective, but it's still art.

I'm not attacking the LX100 you so dearly praised, in fact I once considered it, but Q is well-respected product line in a (Pentax)forum dedicated to learning, trying to understand everything (about Pentax), and most people will appreciate if you'll simply ask why your Q's IQ is lagging behind the LX100. I'm pretty sure that you'll get a lot of helpful replies. But if you come in here and simply say that the Q is rubbish and the LX100 is manna from heaven, then my Pentax K3, K30, Kx, GR and even that forlorn M9 will be tempted to say that your LX100 is garbage too.

They're not even comparable if you look at the specs. In paper, the LX100 is suppose to trash the Q line, maybe I'm biased, but if you look around, I can see some pretty Q images here, but I have (honestly) have yet to see an LX100 image that will beat some of the best here.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong forum, or maybe, just maybe, you're at the wrong forum.

Panasonic LX100 much better than Pentax Q

I'm under the impression that if you have to do a lot of "heavy editing" on a photograph, then that means you've messed up the fundamentals i.e., composition, exposure, etc. If such is the case I don't think that it's the camera's/lens' fault.

However, please forgive me if I borrow your words shamelessly. "I have yet to see a single spectacular photo taken with the LX100, on this forum or anywhere. The kind of photo that makes you want print it out 1m wide and hang it on the wall."

But seriously, I like how it looks though, a lot better than the GR, and typical to Panasonic, built impeccably. But as to ergonomics, and IQ, the GR will easily beat it hands-down, blindfolded, and all.

The LX100 with its m43 sensor, right? I'm sure it must be better vs the Q's puny and archaic sensor.

I don't have an LX100, but I'm pretty sure that my K3 will beat the living daylight out of that Panasonic, even literally. Heck, even my M9 will totally annihilate that LX100! ;)

Generally, I don't put filters as well, but I never go out without a hood.. But I always give my front elements a thorough "air bath" from the rocket blower every chance I've got when outside.

The only lens I occasionally use with a filter is my 18-135. It's my go anywhere/sacrificial/lens cap lens

Will you leave APS-C for the K1?

Either my Leica or one of my kidney has to leave (maybe the latter), but not my K3 when I get an FF Pentax.

I'm trying to exercise self-restraint not to order the K1 at the moment, as the logical part of me thinks that I should wait for the K1 Mark II.

Still, since time immemorial, the best way to eliminate temptation is just to give in. :D

The aliens are already here, and let me guess, the first thing that they'll do is to compare, extol the virtues of their S****y products vs. the K1, and proclaim that theirs is of better quality, more useful because of the EVF, smaller body, better video, and they have their new, apparently perfection-personified lenses with names that sounds like se_x toys.

I'm planning to keep my F70-210 and 55-300 for "light" duties. Actually, I prefer the F70-210 over the 55-300, despite the former's unsightly aesthetics, and obnoxiously loud AF.

Indoors, I find the 55-300 passable, but wanting at f/8, working at a distance of 30-40 meters away, mounted on a monopod. The F70-210 on the other hand is too slow, and too noisy when used indoors.

My daughter is in a lot of stage plays and musicals, lighting is rarely a problem, but distance and sharpness is. I'm hoping that the 60-250 will be a whole lot better than the 55-300. I actually need to move quite a distance to avoid the other smartphone/tablet-toting parents. If I can get closer, I, often use the 77 too.

Sony Unveils Its New G Master Line of Flagship Lenses

I'd like to believe that, but Sony is a successful mammoth of a company that is now always under pressure to deliver their stockholders' expectations, a victim of their wild successes in the past, and their sheer size. As such, their tireless pursuit for innovation has always been commendable, but again, this is also their biggest curse. They are quick to adopt (not adapt!) to a standard, but they can leave it as quickly if it does not deliver the growing stockholders (not stakeholders, which includes customers) expectations. They can open the valve and spend huge sum of money to prime it, but they can as quickly drop it like a hot potato.

Off the top of my head:

1. Betamax (vs JVC's VHS)
2. Digital Audio Tape (vs casette tapes)
3. Minidisc (vs Philip's Compact Discs)
4. ATRAC (vs MP3)
5. Memory Sticks (vs CF)
6. Universal Media Disc (vs digital distribution)

Among product lines they have surprisingly "dropped" recently after losing billions of dollars:
1. VAIO
2. Bravia

I can be 100% wrong, but as a photography hobbyist wearing my financial/market analyst' hat, if I were a betting man, I wouldn't bet on Sony.
