K20D images and a great story!

That used to be the case, however, things are different after Amazon bought dpreview.com. Phil is now on Amazon's payroll and doesn't get a thing directly from Canon and Nikon. Phil not owning dpreview.com anymore is the reason why I started posting over there again.

Cheers!

If you ask me, "Live view" in the viewfinder is a silly idea, doesn't make much sense at all. Notice I said "Live view."

"Image preview" in the viewfinder is what I've heard the rumors say and that makes much more sense; so just like the "digital DoF preview", a sample shot of the image you're about to take will probably show up in the viewfinder for exposure and DoF confirmation. And as you said, Live histogram is another thing I see happening in the viewfinder.

Live view in the viewfinder? Two "live views" at the same time? One digital and one optical? Completely redundant drain of battery that I don't see happening.

Cheers!

Planning second system.

I would have done this two years ago when the D200 came out, but it had a couple of issues that stood in direct conflict with how I want to shoot (more to do with ergonomics and other small options, than anything else), so I decided to stay away.

With the D300, Nikon has resolved every single issue I had with the D200, and now I'm seriously considering going two system. I'll keep one K10D and most of my primes, sell whatever zoom I have in a few months time and get Nikon gear, use that for work, keep the Pentax for myself only.

Here's my plan for the Nikon system:

2x D300 bodies
17-55/2.8 DX (used it several times, very good [and expensive] lens)
85/1.4 Nikkor
70-200/2.8 VR (this zoom is a masterpiece, forget FA*80-200 or even the Canon 70-200/2.8 IS, this baby scratches prime quality wide open)
Some kind of Macro, not sure which, yet.

In that vein, I've dropped my plans for a 16-50/2.8 and 50-135/2.8; just get a Sigma 18-50/2.8 Macro for now and pair it with my 70-200/2.8 DG, using two K10Ds.

I think what I'll sell from my Pentax lineup is one K10D body, Sigma 18-50/2.8 (dont have yet), Sigma 70-200/2.8 DG (already has a potential customer lined up), FA50/1.4 and FA77/1.8.

After the cleanup, my Pentax line will look like this in most probability:

DA14/2.8, FA31/1.8, DFA50/2.8 Macro, Voigtlander 75/2.5, I *may* add a DA*200/2.8 to this just to give it a bit of reach.

My work just simply cannot stop and wait for Pentax to make releases, yet I love the system, the primes, so they'll stay for personal shooting. Another reason is the fact that both Canon and Nikon have "Pro" programs you can enroll in so there's less of a chance of my entire photography getting crippled by months of repairs at Pentax, in case a body and/or lens breaks down all of a sudden.

Anyone else having such thoughts?

Cheers,
-Asad

Why are we photographers?

So long as I was shooting film, I wasn't *really* getting into photography unless I was in very close proximity to a 1-hour E6 lab.

Only when I got a DSLR did I really dive into it... but why with a DSLR and not my 35mm Spotmatic? Two words:

"Instant gratification"

Nothing like taking a shot with lots of enthusiasm, and then checking (chimping) on the back LCD and finding out, with great satisfaction, that you got a keeper; that your vision has materialized out of your brain, into the physical world.

I'll never be just a photographer, even though I am what is called a "Pro", these days, but it's a phase in my life where the biggest concentration is on photography, it is bound to change; but I'll always shoot for myself, to get that "instant gratification" that one can get so addicted to. It's my "fix." :D

I'm here, trying to save up money for a second K10D body, and here we have those impatiently waiting for the next fix. :-P

Relax guys, it'll come, but when it's time. I don't think Pentax will ever release any significant product around the same time as Canon and Nikon, will the wider industry even notice Pentax's announcement amidst the *full-frame* Nikons and *machine-gun* 10 FPS self-cleaning Canons?

Sure they'll get noticed, but the effect Pentax hopes to make with announcing something nice will be almost nullified. Muffled.

Go out and shoot something. :-)

cheers,

I agree that the comparison is a bit "skewed", but the Canon being heavy actually adds to it's stability, at least thats how I've experienced it. I was much more easily pron to shaking my K100D with a DA50-200 on it, than I am with a K10D with the Sigma 70-200/2.8.

Cool test, Codiac.

I was fairly disappointed when I tried the DR feature the first few times, but after a firmware upgrade or two... now it seems to be working much better. Haven't had a dust spot in ages, at least one that the DR system couldn't remove.

Hi Stu!

Good thing I didn't miss this one, haven't been posting much here lately, there's some stuff that needs doing so I'm working on it, among other things, websites.

Anyway, this is a great image! The composition is very good, so is the execution.

What was this taken with?

Continue to like DA 50-200

A true general rule of thumb, but there are many exceptions, as mentioned above.

Wrong, go check the websites and the weights of Sigma and Tamron 50-200 qequivalents, which happen to be 55-200 in both cases. The Sigma weighs 310g, the Tamron is 300g while the Pentax is 255g. Double, eh? And what about the fact that Sigma and Tamron BOTH have internal motors, HSM in Sigma's case and normal micro-motor in Tamron's, while the Pentax has no motor to speak of. They don't show the weights of the Sigmas and the Tamrons in Pentax mount, but I bet the weights are very close to 255g.

Maybe you were trying to compare the 50-200 to Tamron and Sigma's 75-300 lenses? If so, why? First, they are *full-frame* lenses, making them use more glass than the Pentax, second they have more range.

The same material is used in all the non-limited and non-DA* lenses, including the DA16-45 and DA12-24 (they have metal zoom rings, though). As for the 31mm Limited, that line of 3 FA limiteds was created to emulate the classic *metal* primes when it comes to look and feel, why would they put plastic in there?

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
-Asad

Rumour

When I put the Pentax digital Roadmap in one hand and then put rumors (or wishful thinking, or wet dreams for some) like these in the other, it simply does NOT make sense.

Ahem, let's see. Future lens choices for the Pentax *PRO* DSLR: FA35, FA50, the 3 FA Limiteds and a costs-as-much-as-a-car-and-built-to-order FA*300/2.8. Nothing wrong with the quality of these lenses, just that they're far too few to be called a system, let alone one that caters to professionals.

I don't care about talk that the DA lenses are really FF lenses in another dimension.

What do we have here... OS zealotry? I thought that profession was reserved for a certain breed of Linux users. :p Some of the responses here are total crap (i.e. the moment you think you know lots, you're wrong), but I'd rather not add to the flames in this thread -- to each his own.

Not one bit surprising to me... in fact I was waiting for them to make the announcement. They can't handle a complicated integration into another company, release 2 new and one revised DSLR bodies and 5 lenses -- all during the same Fall time period.

It's Pentax after all, they don't release much stuff on a normal day, let alone when they have to reshuffle their entire company around.

Good buy...

I've read nothing but excellent reviews about this lens, so good in fact that the word "flawless" appears in the "conclusion" of just about every review of it out there; one of the lenses I have my eyes on, but DFA50 gives me little cause to worry too much about it, since the 50 itself is just about flawless.

About the lens being better than the DFA100, I don't have any doubts about that, never was really impressed by that 100, the DFA50, however, is a different story...

Heh, I hope that's *not* because you're in the "know" about Pentax's big gun plans but mainly because of the qualities of the FA*s. :p

Glad you enjoyed the images. I like the B&W shots better as well, love the B&W facility in Bibble Pro. About the Loo, I agree, one more was needed.

Thanks, Tim, glad you liked these. And I hear ya, the camera does get in the way of enjoyment sometimes. I never print for myself, either, only for customers if they need the prints.

As for what I do with my images, with some, nothing, while others I keep for stock if they have that potential. I hardly ever take any photojournalistic shots, so I haven't ever thought of submitting any images to publications.

Thanks, Paul. Yeah I like to make a progression out of a series if there's many images to it.

Hah, you're right, there were quite a few line-ups for the porta-loos, should have taken a couple more. :)

Yep, I sure do. It's the DG version, one just before they released the current DG "Macro" version of this lens.

I wouldn't call you crazy since the new Macro version isn't available in Pentax mount, but they made Pentax mount variants in all the previous incarnations, including the DG version.

This lens seems to be fairly rare these days, from what I've been reading here on the forum.
