Landscape High-contrast sunsets - do they work?

Yep, I understand the appeal of the wide look too. My crops were done at the 5x7 ratio, but if you aren't tying to a print size, try keeping the wide look but just cropping down the sky. This may actually give you even more of a pano look, and I don't think the sky is adding much.

Anyway, have fun with it! john a

When I went DLSR two months ago I decided to shoot raw/dng and went with Photoshop Elements (PSE). For under $100 it includes the organizer, the Camera Raw editor, and the Photoshop editor. From here I intend to (over time) add plug-ins as I learn more. One of the things I found appealing was the informal support ... got a great book recommended from a fellow forum member and took a course in PSE that was offered locally. I can do the basics to get good results, and there's lots more power there as I learn more.

I like both of your photos, and as has previously been said - this is art, not documentary.

Personally I'd crop them both a little tighter and little lower. I don't think the sky in either shot is contributing much to the image.

For the first one, I centred the crop a little more on the dock to give focus. To me this turns all that lovely colour in the waves into a supporting element versus being the subject.

Similar crop on the second, plus I also brightened it up a little.

But that's just my eye and opinion. Keep up the good work.

Good choice, Tsukiouji, and thanks for the comments.

Congrats, Tamia - yours was my favourite too! I think it's the hand prints that really make it.

Having mucked with your other curve, Mychael, I couldn't leave this one alone. :D

A little tighter crop, a little brighter image, and some enhancement on the greenery...

Interesting comments and tweaks from all. When I looked at the image, I was thinking about the composition and a different crop came to mind. I used Velja's B&W version as a starting point. Losing quality due to the image size on the web of course, but here is my version (fwiw):

Pentaximus, I really like your "dwight exit blur" shot.

Went to a big Christmas craft fair today, but only got a few shots before some busy body shut me down and told me that photos aren't allowed. Still learning, but these two were taken with a DA 40mm on my K-5.

lol, so it's not just me! New to the K-5, I tried teaching my self that the front dial is for the shutter speed, since it's closest the shutter button. Next time I went shooting, I figured the front dial would be the aperature, since it's closest the lens! Only two ways to do it, but I always seem to start with the wrong one. :D

And of course, welcome *Ltd!

A photo from a few years ago (taken with my pre-Pentax Fujifilm point and shoot) of Hershey, a great dog who passed a few weeks ago at the age of 16 1/2. He wasn't really a smoker - it's actually a chewy he was working on...

Nature Red Branches

Thanks for the feedback, Tessfully. As this was one of my first I didn't know to fix the white balance and I relied on the "auto enhance" function in Elements. I went back and started over with the DNG file, using your and Adam 's suggestions plus the guidance in the excellent book that Tom suggested. I also tried to restrict the sharpening to the branches and not the bokeh. Plus applied a different crop (5x7 versus 8x10).

I appreciate the help and suggestions. Obviously there's no 'correct', but the finished result is truer to what I was seeing when I took the shot...
