I think it was never one of the great Pentax lenses and we expect - and can pixel peep - better now. It was fine for film because expectations were lower.. I just find the image lack apparent critical sharpness - maybe to do with contrast, maybe resolving power, I don't know. It's not train smash, just not as good (from what I see) as the 150-450, and not as good as the 70-200, as far as comparisons are possible. This is with a K-3:

The thing is, why? The logic of fast frame rates is to capture peak action, but there comes a point where the incremental differences between frames is so minute that it would be hard to decide which is best, so you not just have to sort through hundreds of near identical frames, you have to store them because you can't decide which you like best (unless, of course they're all out of focus, when you've just taken a big bite out of your shutter life for no better reason apart from learning to be more careful ). I can see possible subjects like humming birds where speed of movement of the subject might justify the number of frames to get the perfect shot, but there are very few. If, on the other hand you could dial in the fps to suit the subject (rather than just high or low), that might be interesting

'Rendering' question of FA 43 Limited

This isn't about the two lenses in question, because I don't own either, but I do own the other two FA Ltds and the 100mm macro, as well as the modern 24-70 and 70-200, and for, it's totally about what type of picture you are taking: the Ltds are Street lenses - light and small with amazing 3-D pop and spades of character - they can make your images really stand out - the flatter lenses are best for considered work, whether landscape or portraiture, where IQ rather than character is paramount. That's how I use them, anyway.

the 24-70 is also a rebadged Tamron, but the 70-200 is all Pentax (and a cracking good, if weighty, lens)

Well, welcome to you from Dorset UK!

I think we're honest enough here to admit that there are some things that both Canon and Nikon do better than Pentax, but none of them get it all right and, as you say, the K-1 has great IQ (tops them all in circumstances where pixel shift is possible) in a great value package - and Ricoh seem to be committing increasingly to top quality glass to go with that IQ and the many unique features of Pentax.

Enjoy! (you will :) )
