G'day John - I took my tripod, but only used it once, so waste of time. A bean bag (use styrofoam - you can't import grain into NZ) would be better. The Pentax 28-105 is magnificent because of its compactness and light weight. Also worth taking a longer lens and light (as in "not heavy") flash for the birds (particularly the South Island Robins that will pose) - I took a Sigma 18-250 as it is compact (although not water resistant), and when chasing Robins the crop isn't so important.

Expect that your gear will be wet most if not all of the time. The K1 and 28-105 is magnificent in these conditions as you don't need to change lenses and you can leave it in a wet bag at ambient temperature. Uses of other brands of dSLR on my trip had to keep their cameras dry in a bag, and that meant it fogged up all the time. I found that the 28-105 handled the wide angles well. The Pentax 15-30 is also magnificent in these conditions but heavy.

I carry my gear in Lowepro or Kinesis photo bags on military belt webbing, wearing the pack over the top. That way, you can get to your gear without taking your pack off and you change lenses easily without putting your gear down on wet, snowy or muddy ground.

I hope this helps.

Adrian

Still playing with my newly minted K1II. This time, a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo in my back yard taken with the Sigma 500 f4.5 APO DG EX and Sigma 1.4x TC. Again, I have used ISO2000. The shot has been substantially cropped, but not resized. Although there is some noise in the background, this appears to be at a level previously seen at ISO1000 on the K1. The ability to increase the ISO like this means I can avoid using flash, and still get shutter speeds of 1/1000th on what was quite a dull day. Great for birding!

Just got my newly minted K1II (ie the upgrade) back from CR Kennedy in Melbourne, and took a couple of shots on the way home to check it out. These are of Newstead House, the oldest residential building in Brisbane, Queensland, which dates to 1846. I haven't checked the settings in the camera, just upped the ISO to 2000 and let crack with the Pentax DFA 15-30 2.8. Unfortunately, it is a pretty solid overcast in Brisbane today, but I think the new camera did an outstanding job. Noise level at this ISO is just brilliant. The only changes I made in Lightroom were to adjust curves, Vibrance and Saturation.

Been a bit busy lately moving into a new phase of my career, so have not posted for far too long. Rainbow Lorikeet from my back yard with Sigma 500 f4.5 APO DG EX and Sigma 1.4x TC, and a pair on a perch - a male Scarlet Myzomela and a Silvereye on Mt Coot-tha in Brisbane, taken with Pentax 150-450. Both taken in Queensland, Australia.

G'day - I am not as happy as I should be with the 150-450. Optically, it is great and very versatile for aircraft, birds, and particularly while traveling or bush-walking. However, my copy has been particularly unreliable, and on the three occasions I have taken it overseas as mymajor long lens it has failed (all unrelated failures) and had to be sent back to Japan for repair on each occasion. Other people I know have had no problems at all and use the lens quite extensively.

Thanks for sharing some of that amazing historical engineering. As an (aerospace) structural engineer, I waxed lyrical for quite a while to a somewhat less excited spouse about the various structural features such as the rolling expansion joints and the cross bracing when examining the bridge in Rockville Utah. By the way, the local community is collecting money to save the Rockville bridge. The county apparently wants to replace it, but every shop in town is collecting funds.
