I want to thank each of you who participated in this challenge. I always find it difficult to select a host for the next challenge, there is always such a wide range of results, from dramatic to subdued and also black and white. Each with their own merits.

scphoto - Welcome to Pentax Forums and to the post prcessing challenge. You started us off with a B&W version nicely executed.

mariwalt - You were able to keep the colors of the red rock balanced nicely with the whites of the snow and greens of the trees.

Bruce Clark - An interesting choice, setting the mountains and sky in the background to B&W and thereby drawing the attention into the canyon foreground in color.

tmlawes - You choice to retain more of the sky than others and have a nice balance of the colors.

jmacias - You chose a portrait crop and focus the attention to the canyon.

noelcmn - The most dramatic entry with vibrant colors.

lidy - A well balanced take on the image.

tuggie 76 - A nicely balanced image with a slightly brighter look.

todd - Two B&W entries, each with a slightly different feel. The first showing the expanse of the scene and the second more focused on the formations in the foreground.

savoche - A color and a B&W, both well done.

Tas - These challenges are always a good place to try out the new "toys". A nice image.

It wasn't easy, but I must select the host for the next challenge and I will bestow that honor on savoche for the color entry.

This was my result:

It is time to bring #309 to a close. I want thank each of you who participated in this and past challenges and keep them going.

Well lets get to it....

Tas - Good to have you back! A nice well balanced image, retaining the storm clouds to the right, the colors of the sunset to the left and still keeping the canyon visible.

photocles - A bright image while still retaining the stormy feel of the day.

Metafrastis - A great job enhancing the rays of the sun and drawing the focus of the image to the sun.

aitrus3 - Wonderful job of bringing out the colors of the sunset.

todd - An excellent job of sharpening and bringing out the details of the canyon. The most vibrant color of the entries and truly brings the "wow" to the image. Well done!

vector - You chose a cooler temp for the image, befitting the evening hour well.

tuggie76 - A very nice, but subtle enhancing of the sun's rays into the canyon.

noelcmn - You elected to shine a beam of light into the canyon from the sun. The beam naturally draws the viewer's attention through the canyon and to the sun.

mariwalt - An excellent job at retaining the stormy feel of the day with the sun peaking underneath the clouds.

Well done everyone, but I must select one to bestow the honor of hosting 310.

I will bestow this honor to todd! Congratulations!

Thank you astonm for hosting #308.

For #309 your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to bring brilliance to these images taken at Lipan Point of Grand Canyon. You are provided three bracketed photographs to work with. You may use any single, all or any combination.

#309 will close on 10/3.

Well, I guess its time to wrap this challenge up.

I want to thank each of you who participated. This was a high contrast image, which lends itself to using HDR, but that also creates some challenges. One challenge is keeping the bark of the Aspen trees white. Another is avoiding halos.

There were 5 entries. Surprisingly, no one presented a black and white.

First a few comments:

photocles - You have one of the brighter images, which lends itself to focusing on the sun burst in the image. You managed to avoid introducing any significant halos. Nicely done.

Racer X 69 - I love the sharpening and detail of your entry and the vibrant yellow of the leaves. You did lose the white of the trunks and introduced halos around the leaves and sky, a very common problem with HDR. Well done.

Tomzohh - Glad to have you continuing with the post processing challenges. A nice well balanced image. Perhaps a slight yellow shift to the tree trunks, but overall a nice image.

noelcmn - You did some cleaning up, removing the rock and fallen tree in the foreground. You have perhaps the darkest processing, retaining the depth of the shadows, but enough detail to draw the viewer's attention to the forest floor, up the trunks to the sun burst and then the bright sky. A good image.

astonm - Good to have you back! While noelcmn removed the rock in the foreground, you chose to dig it up and move it closer to the trees. You also chose to maintain the depth of the shadows. As is common with HDR, there is some haloing between the leaves and sky, still a very nice entry.

Choosing the next host is never easy, but I must. I will pass the baton for #306 to photocles. I think you did the best at keeping the tree trunks white and the details of the leaves contrasted to the sky. Well done.

Since no one tried B&W, I thought I would give it a shot:

Thank you,

You have good eyes, indeed this was taken along the Inner Basin Trail, which starts in Lockett Meadow, just north of Flagstaff.
