MX shutter sticking/locking over 1/60 shutter speed

Okay, so I tried pushing the curtain (it needs just a 2-3mm push) and it worked! The mirror came down.

MX shutter sticking/locking over 1/60 shutter speed

I've had a Pentax MX for a while, never really used it since there is nowhere to develop film around where I live besides walgreens :(

Decided I might try to sell it so I started testing it out. Turns out the mirror gets stuck very frequently if the shutter speed is set any faster than 1/60". It's like it does 90% of the shutter operation and then sticks.

If I switch back and fire at 1/60 or slower it works fine, getting stuck very rarely. So it doesn't get permanently stuck.

When I do this with the back flap open, I can see that the shutter opens and closes but the mirror stays opened. Also it feels like the shutter doesn't close all the way (can see the end of the curtain, but there is no light gap).

Anyone have an idea as to what might be going on? I wouldn't want to sell it in this condition and might end up keeping it for any future film endeavors so I would like to get it fixed if possible.

K-01, Autofocus, and Jello Shutter

The K-01 is an awesome camera for photography. Maybe not sports photography, it is definitely NOT for moving subjects since CDAF can only go so far. For landscapes, street photog or pre-focused environments it is excellent.
The main selling point of this camera, I think, is the mood it puts you in. With an expensive DSLR you are walking around like a pro photographer with intimidating, bulky equipment. The K-01 is meant to be a simpler, more casual alternative to a DSLR while maintaining compatibility with all the lenses. That's why I love mine so much. You can take it and go. It looks a little weird with a large zoom mounted to it, so I prefer to use my primes but sometimes the 16-50 is on there. It's clunky but it works. The main point being, it's not a "serious" camera in the sense that it still brings impeccable image quality but is just less capable than a true DSLR, but at the same time due to its casual nature it is more fun to use.

In terms of video, it's not the K-01's strong point. Not even in terms of jello shutter. The compression on the K-01 is pretty heavy which means things like distant leaves in trees will just turn into green blobs. It tends to have a fake sharpening effect even with sharpening turned off, resulting in weird moire patterns sometimes. There's artifacts around edges, etc... Watching the video on a small screen is fine since it is scaled down and looks nice. But if you blow it up to full size 1080p on a laptop or desktop you will see how much overall detail it lacks.
Pentax has never really been good with video performance. If you want to do video, go for a Canon/Sony/Panasonic like mentioned above.
If you want to take a look, here is a video I shot mostly on a K-01

Two scenes (handheld in car) were shot on a Canon camcorder but everything else was the K-01 with a DA 16-50 or DA15.

MX-1 in montreal

Took the MX1 as a quick street photo camera to my trip to montreal. After editing these in lightroom I quickly learned that noise and sharpness do not matter all that much. If I only had just my K-01 (my second camera I took) I would have been swapping lenses back and forth and losing so many on-the-go shots. This is an amazing street camera. I had more fun shooting with this than the K-01

You bring up another point -- pentax might reveal some new lenses this year so maybe it's worth waiting since the 16-50 may be upgraded

DA*16-50 vs DA 20-40 WR

The 16-50 gets a bad rep due to the failing AF and that quality control has seemed spotty (some copies were great some were bad). Lately those issues seem to have been ironed out.

I will say that as a general walkaround it's pretty irreplaceable especially with full WR. It's not the sharpest at 2.8 but stop down to f/5.6 or higher and it gets pretty damn sharp. Maybe not as sharp as a prime but you can make it super sharp in post-processing. It's extremely versatile and if I had to take just one lens with me somewhere I would take the 16-50.

No comment on the 20-40 since I haven't used it but you can consider this:
It's smaller -- less intimidating for your subject (the 16-50 is pretty huge) and lighter.
It's not constant f/2.8 so you will need more adequate lighting/shoot in higher ISO. The focal range also makes it a little less versatile.
It has the DC motor (an improvement on SDM).

They're both WR but I think the 16-50 is a step above that (DA* lenses are water and dust resistant whereas regular WR is just water). Someone correct me if I'm wrong

DA 50/1.8 or F 50/1.7?

50/1.7

honestly one of the best lenses Pentax has ever made (M/A/F/FA, they're all the same 50/1.7 formula so basically perform the same.

Stopped down to f/4 and over, it is my sharpest lens. The microcontrast and rendering is second to none.

Went to belchertown again, tried to use some new perspectives.

All DA* 16-50 on my K-01. Kind of astonishing how sharp it can get at times.

Item Description
I've had this camera since 2009, but haven't been using it at all in the past year or two. I've mostly switched to my K-01. The body only has just under 5200 shutter actuations. It's in great condition with only one or two tiny scratches. I've never dropped it on anything; everything is intact and solid. Included is the 18-55mm Pentax kit lens (first version), a Pentax strap, the official Pentax BG2 grip, the battery charger, an extra battery, and a 16GB Transcend Class 10 SD card.

The kit lens is in good condition. The focusing ring is a little bit lighter feeling than it was when new, but regardless, manual and auto focus still works perfectly. No scratches on the lens, optical quality is pretty great (I think this is one of the better copies).
The strap is in good condition -- no tears, wearing or holes. Sturdy since day one.
The grip is in perfect condition. It hasn't seen much use. Everything is fully functional.
The battery charger and extra battery both work as expected. Both included batteries have seen near-equal use so should hold an equal charge.
The 16GB Transcend card was bought recently as a backup card so it's seen very little use.

The original box and manuals are NOT included (don't have them anymore). No contact cover for the grip connector or hotshoe cover (lost both).

Or an M/A 50/1.7 if you're okay with manual focus.

Amazing lenses and can be found pretty cheap (especially the M)

If you're asking if the 43 would be good as a one-lens setup for Yosemite -- no.

If you're going there you might as well go all out and bring a wide, normal, and tele lens.
