In my industry, I saw a big player go bankrupt four (that's right, four) times in about 15 years. They finally got it right and reincarnated themselves as an impact player in my industry. As an aside, the US Federal government rightfully saw their four trips into Bankruptcy Code Chapter 11 as an abuse of the system, and subsequently limited the number of times a company may go bankrupt.

Just because Pentax has had two owners in what? four years? does not doom it to a slow (or fast demise). Either Ricoh ownership is a good thing or not. Or another way of stating this is to ask if Ricoh management is a collection of buffoons who can't make a decent acquisition.

I come down on the side that Pentax will prosper. Too many people I meet want/need instant gratification, in this case in the form of overly rapid results from the Ricoh purchase of Pentax. It just don't happen that way.

Thanks........a $300 repair is certainly better than buying a new K-5 for $800 or so. And that's a better idea.........take up the $$$ problem w/ Pentax USA.

A friend here in Denver took his nearly two year old K-5 in for repair locally. The repair shop tells him it's a bad main board and they'll have to send it out C.R.I.S in Phoenix for the work.

Anyone had the K-5 main board replaced and what was the expense?

Thanks......

I returned a K-5 series 38xxxxx to B&H. They readied my replacement K-5 package for UPS pickup on Dec 11. It arrived this past week and is a 39xxxxx series camera. It tested fine......no sensor spots.

As far as B&H goes, I think that they're now shipping clean stock out the door.

Lightroom 3 - Slow?!

I've been visiting the Adobe LR Forum and this issue has been discussed there. A frequent contributor, Victoria Brampton, has this potential fix to the slowness problem. I tried it and LR3 is much faster than before Victoria's suggestion-

" The preview mechanism has been upgraded, could potentially be an issue. You can exclude that possibility by closing LR, finding the catalog on the hard drive and renaming or deleting the *.lrdata folder. Restart LR and there won't be any previews, so select the photos and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Previews. Once it's done (by all means test it on a small batch), see if that's better. No promises, but a good bet, assuming the slowness is Library module rather than Develop."

I don't get that. I import (actually in Adobe's language, copy) my DNG files from the SD card straight to a preferred folder I built for the importation process.

The embedded profile delivers the JPG in camera custom settings as set by the photographer.

I'll say it again- by using the K20D DNG file format, plus the LR 2.3 thru 2.7 embedded camera profile, I get as good results (or better) as I did when using the Pentax supplied software.

That embedded camera profile is what makes LR such a delight to use.

And......all due credit goes to Modest Mouse over at that other place for putting this info out last year. I'm merely repeating it.

Jim-
I use the DNG format. The K20D certainly has an "embedded" camera profile available in the Camera Calibration module of LR v2x (if shooting in DNG). I neglected to mention that over a year ago, I switched from PEF to DNG to take advantage of that embedded profile and haven't looked back. It was so long ago, that I don't even think about PEF/DNG format anymore. I find the IQ now in LR to equal Pentax's Silkypix engine.

If you're using the K-7, that might explain why. Modest Mouse (on the other forum) can explain why better than I , but for some reason the camera generated embedded JPEG is available for a K20D Camera Profile, but not necessarily for other models.

LR 3 Final Release - When??

I guess I'll just have to guess as to when LR3 Public will be released. Nothing definitive stated by Adobe. *If* the NR features are good enough vice LR2, maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to keep the K20D for some years to come.

I also wonder if LR3 will be a $100 upgrade or a full repurchase?

Did I read somewhere a credible report that said LR3 final version would be out for purchase/upgrade sometime in May 2010? I thought I did. Anyone else?

No, you need to go to the tab in LR on the right side (below detail as I recall) named Camera Calibration. In there, you'll find some profiles to choose. Embedded will be there.

I've been using it (embedded) for about a year with my K20D. I'm 100% satisfied.

I've made a preset using that embedded profile plus some other items to get the development process underway while importing the images from the SD card.

question for Da 14mm owners

Keebler-
I posted the same Q over on the other forum. I can add my name to the list of DA14mm owners who have observed exactly the same focus ring behavour. Based on replies here, it's good to know that it's a characteristic of the lense rather than a defect.

Now that I know that the lense is in good shape, I'll sell it as I purchased that DA12-24mm last summer and certainly have no need of two wide angle lenses.

Pentax brand wrist-strap. I can carry the K20D and the heavy DA12-24mm all day long and feel secure without feeling any strain.

Will-
I just checked the PPL and Photo Browser manual for v3.6. The only reference I can find regarding DNG is in the Photo Browser section; it only speaks to converting PEF files to DNG and then working with them within PPL.

I see nothing about importing DNG files directly from the camera SD card into the Pentax software. That would square with my experience...........PPL could not/would not open my K20D DNG files. Period.

This would also square with generally accepted concept on "that other forum" that PPL cannot work with DNG files produced by the K20D.

I would love to know if there is a way for PPL to work with in-camera DNG files.

Kiwibird-
I tried opening my K20D DNG files in PPl v3.5. No luck. I do acknowledge that pg 3 of the PPL manual states that PPl can work with Pentax camera DNG files.

What exactly did you do to open DNG files within PPL?
