Pentax's status in "Best Camera" reviews

Well, it's just a sensor test measure with subsequent results. A camera is more than its sensor...What about a similar test and ranking on AF performance? Only one Pentax and absolutely no Canon models? Major grain of salt here, but good news for the K-1 (in terms of sensor measurement and cost!).

Long-time faithful Pentax user, these days I'm so fed up with their AF that I'm seriously considering jumping ship to Nikon. Not happy to admit that, but I need precise AF in extreme situations. Pentax AF requires an enormous amount of effort and concentration to compensate for its mediocrity. Will wait for the ever-elusive K-3 succesor or a new FF if demonstrably better AF is available...

Yes, you have a factory reset option in the menu of the camera. Do that, remove and fully charge the battery.

DA 16-85 loses screw

I nearly had the same problem with mine. The zoom rotation became stiff and then developed an extra "notch". I had to send it for out of warranty repair here in France. I proceeded to whine and complain and Ricoh finally paid for the parts while I paid for labor. It still cost me some 200 euros. I immediately took it to India on vacation where it performed correctly, Good luck with the repair.

I don't want my K-5IIs to die anytime soon either. But if and when it does, I want the K-3II/APS-C successor to be available!

Just confirming that JPEG setting will allow those options to be selectable as was already mentioned. That K-5IIs is one hell of a camera and produces excellent images. If you don't shoot RAW, I'd recommend trying (if this is not the case now) using LightRoom for your RAW images. You can tweak, enhance and improve your images in a spectacular fashion. Shooting RAW and post-processing in LR turns drab photos into keepers! Enjoy that camera, it's a total winner.

K-3 Mark 1 AF questions vs K5ii
Posted By Davidparis

It doesn't exist...anymore than a "K-3 Mark 2". It's a typical thing that many Englishmen and others "invent" to distinguish between models or production years from any manufacturer. I recall a story about my Jadis tube amplifiers, which are made here in France and sold around the world. I had an issue and checked the hifi forums for this amplifier. The good folks from the UK had advice about the Mark 2, the Mark 3 and the Mark 4. TOTALLY PUZZLED, as the manufacturer Jadis did not distinguish models in this manner, I called them, and the founder BLEW A FUSE and said "WE NEVER MADE ANY MARK THIS OR THAT, they are all the same amplifier".
So, if I make my calculations correctly, I own a K-30 Mark 1 and a K-5 II Mark 2?

Electronics ban on flights to Middle East countries

My understanding is that the ban is FROM these countries; Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, "devices measuring more than 16cm in length, 9.3cm in width, or 1.5cm depth will be banned from the cabin and need to be placed into hold luggage and checked-in before going through security." The UK is now implementing it as well. Going TO these countries remains a mystery...If the idea is to dissuade nasty people from putting explosive material in computers and iPads, you'd think a shoe or a camera lens would work for that as well. More detail is needed from the government. In the meantime, airlines will customize things according to their own viewpoint, as long as the computers are forbidden. Finally, the thought of checking camera equipment as bagage is not a pleasant one.

Trusty DA 16-85 has kicked the bucket and bitten the dust...

Well, here in Europe customers are "pigeons" and we are used to being "stuck with it" and paying outrageous prices for most everything we buy. The goofballs in Brussels with their 2 year warranty directive from 1999 still have not succeeded in having this become applicable to customers Europe-wide. So hey, you end up getting used to being abused. That said, in this context, i'm not entirely on the war path with Ricoh Imaging France and feel that did make some sort of effort. Secondly, I didn't make an issue of this anywhere or at anytime on social media, other than the post here on PF. I wasn't interested in causing a mess for a relatively minor problem that may end up less horribly than I had predicted. I just hope my lens works correctly when I get it back !

Hello,

Just to update, the lens has been examined and an estimate for 285€ has been proposed. It entails, beyond general cleaning and alignment, replacing of a roller, helicoides and the motor (!). I have no idea why the motor would be replaced...Anyway, Ricoh Imaging France, after some discussion, decided to provide the parts free of charge and leave me liable for labor and shipping by the repair center. The new estimate comes to 151€.

I've decided to accept that, in spite of the fact that I think the case for pleading the Euro 2 year guarantee is still valid, but I have a trip to Kerala, India scheduled for early April and I'd prefer to take the DA16-85 rather than the DA18-135...

So, at this stage I'll just hope that the repair is solid and that the lens performs as before. I will recognize that Ricoh Imaging France did make an effort to help the customer.

Have a good one.

I'd do a full reset, get a new battery, use a sensor cleaning kit and then learn the camera by the manual and by using it. Can't think of any accessories other than lenses, but if that K-5 can be nurtured back into shape, for 99£ it could be an excellent deal.

K5 IIs for 280EUR - is it a good deal?

Good question. I'd vouch for the K-5IIs a milliion times over, but the shutter count is somewhat high. It may depend on the care the owner gave the camera which is a tough call. You could also haggle a bit using the shutter count as an argument and get him as close to 200€ as possible ...

Would be nice, but no cigar. The French law for this was officially passed as Article L217-7 in an Ordinance passed on 14 March 2016. It specifies and legalizes the 24 month warranty. I think the general confusion and public ignorance on these questions always favor the retailer and/or manufacturer.

Hello all,

My trusty and highly-enjoyable DA 16-85 purchased at the only brick and mortar for Pentax here in Paris, France in June 2015 has decided to play a dirty trick. A few days ago I grabbed my kit on the way out and noticed the barrels were very very sticky on the lens, making the zooming motion extremely imprecise. Then I noticed, at full extension to 85mm, that the barrels were loose and wobbly. Never saw this behavior before with this lens. To make things worse, at the short end of 16mm, a slight turn more with minimal pressure causes the lens to go "clack" and gain an extra "stop"...It just clicks in and out of some new position making an audible popping noise each time. I have never dropped or mishandled this lens, which is normal when you pay hard-earned cash for a piece of optics...

Needless to say, am very disappointed as I now own a FrankenLens. Contacted the retailer who had no idea what to say or do and has never offered a solution or any form of support (La Boutique Pentax in Paris). Ricoh Imaging France suggested I send it to their repair center for an estimate. Ricoh Imaging France now has 2 official repair centers here, PM2S near Paris and Nikken Techno France which is in Paris.

The other battle concerns the guarantee. The retailer and manufacturer offer a 1 year guarantee. However, in Europe there exists a law called "Consumer's Law" which extends the basic guarantee from 1 to 2 years. This has been helpful with Apple products who of course do everything possible to avoid repairing things under guarantee. This European directive or the legislative form of this law exists Europe-wide since about 1999. Ricoh Imaging has indicated that France only officialized the text in March 2016, making it applicable. Therefore, they argue that my lens is not covered by the 2 year warranty.

Currently, I'm awaiting news from the repair center and a final decision from Ricoh France.

Brgds.

I had been enjoying mine and still do, even after removing it from the camera body one day and HALF THE LENS STAYED ON AND HALF CAME OFF! The lens basically separated itself in two under the super-human strength I applied to simply perform a lens change. I removed the part still attached to the body and re-inserted into the other half and it's been working ever since. Sharp as a tack. I do believe it's a "plastic piece of cr*p" but it does capture a clean shot. I'm even taking it BACK to India for the third time next month...
One more advantage : if it's stolen, you lose it, you decide to throw it in the ocean or you want to see what happens when a train runs over it, IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL !
