Bit of advise needed with Wireless flash {optical}

Hi Tommot1965, I still remember using setup similar to what you're trying to do. And i always use an aperture range from f6.3 to f11 at speed always at 1/180s. Maybe i tried this a little different, here is my set up :
EF 500(slave) same channel with K-5, about 1/8 power (varied)
AF-360 (Slave 2 mode, press Light/Format 3 sec and choose [BIG C] between slave 1 or
slave 2) ,----press Light/Format in AF360 to exit. Set power output manually (varied).
K-5 (Flash Wireless mode =OFF, so as not to contribute with other flash) ISO mostly
200-->500 (depends on the subject)

I have done this many times and about using AF-360 together with EF-500 on the same channel
was sort of one out of ten hit with luck. So i change the AF-360 to slave mode 2 but beware that that mode can be fired by any camera..... hope this helps.........Buaobao

Has the exposure problem with flash been solved?

It's good to know that the new firmware is solving some issues, but i have a question.

Can the K-5 new fw v1.02 really expose correctly(using external flash) without changing aperture, sensor ISO or shutter speed if using bounce flash at the colored ceiling or not so bright wall, or maybe a ceiling that is 8 meters high and a wall that is another ten meters away like a ballroom size ? (just a thought)

This is kind of expected outcome for a K20d when controlled lighting is use. Same as my old Sigma 24-70mm which also gives me fine details.
Nice Pic !

I might have over stated the K-5 upper limit, what i'm talking about is upper limit inside histogram altho not recommended.

Read out in viewfinder using flash, lets hope this happens.

Daylight (daytime) can vary distance coz the lights are all over.
Indoor (Night time) with flash, distance is fixed on a given flash power, unless you change any of the basic exposure parameters.

Its easy as saying as for example: Good exposure at 2 meters (using direct flash )
(default set up) ISO200, 1/180s, f8 (depends on lens speed)

If the subject step back at 4 meters = underexpose
If you turn aperture smaller(big number) = underexpose
Setting the ISO from 200 to 100 = underexpose and setting all these three the other way will brighten up your subject up to the K-5 limit where you still can pull it down(using computer image editor).

This must be one reason why until now the e-ttl, i-ttl, p-ttl still have flaws that's why great numbers of photogs have not yet rely fully on automatic.

Hi there neuro,

Yup that's other way (or even 1/8 power and bump up ISO) to get continuous flash. Some pentax power pack III just for the 540fgz can also helps shortened recycling time to make the flash ready. But most efficient way is to lowered power output then open aperture/ISO bump up.

In this mode, flash mostly is trying to discharge in full so its kinda hit and miss. So will go back to manual mode and lowered flash power.

Flash in M-Manual, Camera in M-manual, you should be able to see IN THE FLASH GUN DISPLAY the correct distance the flash is set for by PRESSING THE SHUTTER HALFWAY.
Base on the pentax manual when you press auto-focus/shutter halfway, the camera information needed by flash is transmitted to the Flash Gun reception area or some buffer to give you the proper read out (In the Flash gun display) the proper exposure the flash has been set with regards to cameras aperture,ISO and shutter speed.

Is that in a fix distance? Using Flash Gun direct lighting base on the lens that i use at 2 meter distance, I set up my flash power at 1/8, aperture f9, speed 1/125-1/180s, then make
some adjustment to get the average exposure (open aperture or bump up ISO), on occasion i use power up to 1/4.... hope this helps.

Good Things ??
Apart from the other 2 camps are trembling in fears forcing their nonsense
(pro, semi-pro, medium-pro , pro-pro) dslr price down just to compete with
this(pentax K-5) what they called unheard toy(thingy). And this K-5 capabilities
are now becoming a some kinda epidemic outbreak affecting many individuals from
the other camps and are starting to notice that there is really a thingy(lol)
that can blow their ever beloved pro-pro camera with K-5 true price/performance scheme.

K-5 is a real K-7-on-steroid(not viagra) plus a more enhanced focusing on image quality. I know most of upgraders had been pleased being able to shine at most low ambients and a more dampened shutter than its predecessor.
... just to name a few good things about K-5.

If i have an older model than that of your choices and i expecting to shoot more in low-lighting condition then its obviously one choice. Pentax K-7 is very good but being able to have your images ready without the need of any computer processing is a plus unless you take lower ambients environment with flash(knew manual flash) then you know which one is more capable. In the end the best choice is the one that suits you more.

Ah Yes ! K20D is a gem and i'd been using it mainly for controlled lighting coz it always gives me a very good quality. I even don't need to use raw for i know that outcome is more than enough for what I need.

Yes, I've done that since and I can only add to that is if the one who coded that function can really disable the first contact t just like in the twelve seconds timer (would be nice if they could enable the flash only at the end of the 2second timer). cheers

This i have to disagree for the same reason, why are most photogs other than pentax have to use 'always' in manual flash rather than P-TTL. Consistency to expose subject regardless of subject outfit (w/ minor tweak on FEV / EV) is the only reason why still they still hold on to manual flash. // ... buaobao

Why not 645D or K-5 ?:o altho pentax knows HK users are mostly poisoned by "C & N" dslr . Outcast ! using pentax, not any more with K-5, K-r. and the Pro-645D.

The availability of K-x high-iso and better quality picture at dim lighting and then the external function button for K-7 and its good dynamic range during daylight using lower iso is kind of a trade off between the two. Changing of functions and some parameters on the fly with K-7 is so much easier.
Knowing how to use external flash in manual wont keep you from using K-7 dusk till dawn. ( don't let the camera control the flash :). .)
