Really have no idea where to post this, but I found myself driving behind this guy this morning and couldn't resist grabbing a pic with my phone.

I'm sure he has no idea how awesome it would be to have that plate!

Great. I never realized how much that bothered me before you pointed it out. Thanks! :hmm: ;)

Another similar gripe is that I love how my K10D has dedicated arrows to move the AF point. If I wanted to adjust WB, flash, etc. I had to press the Fn button first. The K-3 is opposite, there's a button in roughly the same place that switches between functions and arrows, but it's a toggle, not a one-time deal like the K10D.

I'm just now stumbling across this thread. Your photos are fantastic, but I think your before/after labels must be reversed on the website. Or I'm completely misunderstanding. For example, the very first photo... surely the sunset picture with the lovely warmth coming from the interior lighting is the "after," right? But the "after" label is on the other photo.

Remove aperture lever from K series lens = get M42 functionality?

Maybe it's due to the fact that I never really owned a film camera, but if I was having to deal with changing light or subject, I probably wouldn't pick a manual lens. Also, I'm a back-button-AF'er, so I'm used to being required to hit a button before releasing the shutter. I would just hit a different button.

I feel like I'm coming off condescending, and I'm really not intending to.

Don't Nikon Fx bodies have a Dx mode which basically crops the full-frame image to APS-C? I think that's what you're talking about, OP, but we don't know if Pentax has anything like that, as the FF body is not here yet. But as Na Horuk mentioned, most "DA" lenses actually cover FF, so I doubt that would be an available "feature."

I have one M lens and use it in M mode with green button, but I want to make sure I'm understanding the situation, because I don't even know that I am aware of all of the use cases.

With my M50/1.7, if I want to shoot in f/11, I set the camera to M, the lens to 11, look through a bright viewfinder, hit the green button, then the shutter. I cannot use Av mode with this lens, right?

If I were to snip the aperture or get an M42 copy or whatever, then I would set the camera to Av, the lens to 11, look through a dark viewfinder, and hit the shutter.

Pro: I save a button press.
Con: The viewfinder is dark.

Personally, I don't see how hitting a button is that big of a deal, but maybe I'm missing something.

Upgrade advice for K-r

Yeah, the K-3 is a big step up in handling! More physical buttons to learn, sure, but the end result is a much more intuitive camera. Once you're comfortable, you can turn off the main screen and rely solely on the top and viewfinder screens. Nearly every setting can be changed without diving into menus or even looking at the camera. For starters, you have two dials, so you can change primary exposure settings more easily. Exposure comp, AF mode, ISO, etc. can all be changed by holding the respective button and spinning the dial. There's a dedicated button to switch the arrow keys to function keys with no need to hold the OK button for 1 second. (Although, I still much prefer the K10D handling here, with truly dedicated arrow keys for moving the focus point.)

Also, with a dedicated AF button now, I've embraced back-button AF and found that it's far superior to half-press AF.

Do you need the external flashes? Are there trees? I would try to find a shaded area and set up a reflector to throw some light back in their faces. Try to find a spot where whatever's behind them is very far away to maximize background blur/separation.

Upgrade advice for K-r

I also just recently upgraded from a K-r to a K-3 and I cannot recommend it highly enough! The only caveat is the bigger size, as a flagship-level body, it is considerably larger and heavier than the K-r. If you're looking to keep things small and light, the K-S2 would probably be the way to go.

If you choose K-3, it's currently available for $750 with a free battery grip from B&H, or same price with a free DA50mm f/1.8 and FGZ-200 flash from Adorama.

A dumb hood question

Great! Sounds like we're all on the same page...
  • For storage

  • Interferes with lighting (on-camera flash)

  • Interferes with subject (macro)

  • To install/remove/access filters

  • To appear less intimidating (street)

That's what I thought, I was just seeking some confirmation.

A dumb hood question

On the never-ending hood/filter debate, I fall firmly in the "hood" camp. That's not what this is about...

My question to you other "hoodies" is... Other than the obvious situation where it casts a shadow from the flash or AF assist lamp, is there ever any reason to remove your lens hood? Generally, even if you're purposefully introducing lens flare, your light source will be in the frame and be clear of the hood. I can't think of any photographic reason. Maybe another would be to look less conspicuous/intimidating?

Anyone else?

Oh no.... But I think I have to! The 17 is a great bag, but I could use a little more room. The 7 is being delivered today, I just couldn't pass up a $10 matching little brother bag!

I guess now I can't pass up a $23 big brother. :D

Help on Pentax K-3 AE-L button please.

I don't use AE-L, but another minor annoyance of mine is the same behavior with the AF button. I've set my AF button(s) to Mode 2, effectively disabling half-press AF... but the AF buttons don't wake the camera from sleep. I'm so used to leaving my camera on while I'm out, then popping it up to my face, half-press, then full press. I can't follow the same procedure with the AF button.
